strange ticking noise what'd i break?

Finally got a video in which you can hear the "ticking" I'm getting.

Should be uploaded in a bit.

Ya ever get this figured out?

I think it's the lifter for the #1 exhaust valve as i found excess valve lash when i had the rocker cover off. That was the only one that had aany excess valve lash so that would make sense for the noise.

I started it up tonight after getting home from work about an hour ago. Fired up and ran fine, still ticking however.

I'll have to change out that lifter and see if that fixes it. I hope so as it's getting colder by the day and the snow will soon start flying.

Picked up a new Melling lifter today. It's sitting in a plastic cup of 15w-40 now to get the air out while i remove everything to get to the old lifter.

God i hope this works. *keeps fingers crossed*

:pissed:

Damn it!

i was able to get the lifter retainer plates out and the old lifter out. The roller at the base of the lifter rolls fine and does not bind. The roller looks fine save for a little bit of a polished effect where it rides on the cam.

However, the new lifter and the old lifter look a bit different. They are the same length, but the new one rotates a tiny bit in the retainer plate that holds the lifter in the correct orientation. The old one does not. I'll get a few pictures of the new and old lifter side by side.

I told them the exact part number and they even looked it up while i was standing there. Did I end up with the wrong lifter?

Damn it! There's always a problem in every job :mad2:

Turns out the lifter i bought is the wrong one entirely. :pissed:

Damn that Autozone store. Damn all these parts stores that have MORONS for staff instead of people that have even the SLIGHTEST knowledge of cars. The lady behind the counter says "they come in packs of 4 so here's one" Just great :rolleyes5: so i say "can i see the box this one came from?" -no response-

So for $8 i bit the bullet figuring it was the only part number listed. How bad can they screw it up?

A buddy of mine did get the old lifter disassembled and we sprayed it down. The oil that came out of the lifter was a nasty thick black, similar to the old oil that i drained from the engine. There was a single tiny metal shaving in there as well. I find it strange that it was in there. The lifter was then re-assembled and fresh 15w-40 pumped into the oil hole on the side of the lifter. I hope this works.

I have the old lifter re-installed and the retaining plate installed. I do not have the plate with the bolt installed yet. I'm still hunting for the torque spec for that bolt.

you can't go to autozone for stuff like that. Either Napa or buy it online from a company that specializes in these engines like Peninsular etc. I can't believe no on has a spare layin around. How did the roller itself look ? I wonder if it's worth puting a dial indicator on the camlobe.

The roller looked perfect. It has a little shine to it where it rides on the cam lobe but that's it. I did the roll it on your arm thing my buddy showed me, and it was smooth. No binding when the roller turned.

I now have everything back together save for the intake and bleeding the injector lines. I fear something's not right. the #1 exhaust lifter has obviously been removed and disassembled, cleaned, reassembled and re-installed. Now when cranking the motor over it sounds like it's got compression on only 7 cylinders. I made sure the pushrods were in the correct orientation and sitting on both the lifter and the rocker before re-installing the valve cover. I haven't started it but my buddy who has built engines says i'll have to let the air bleed from the lifter(the first few minutes should do it he says) before it will sound normal.

Is this true or did i seriously mess something up?

On another note, i've removed the stock GP controller and boy oh boy is it cracked. All the way down the middle on one side almost. Can i just seal the crack with silicone? The controller still works fine but i don't like the huge crack in it.

yeah why not . Use sillicone. As for the lifter the proper way is to put the lifter in a pot full of motor oil overnight IIRC so the oil gets in it. I have not rebuilt a hydraulic lifter motor in over 20 yrs but I seem to remember doing that with the small blocks and would imagine this to be the same. I know you are not supposed to install hydraulic lifters dry IIRC. Not sure what the consequece is. Sorry I didn't call you back. Had to work real late tonight.

OK i got the truck back together and after getting it to fire and idle.

It's still ticking. :mad2::mad2: Don't know if it's air in the lifter, air in the injection lines, or if it's doing it just to piss me off. :pissed:

When i installed the old lifter back in my buddy pumped it up full of oil and then i wiped off the top so the magnet could get the best "grip" on it.

My last post i said it sounded like it only had compression on 7. After getting the valve cover, injection lines and intake back on and everything tightened down. Now it sounds like it always has cranking over. Nice and even.

I don't know. Oil pressure's fine. :incazzato: I'm tired of screwing with this F#$%ing truck!!

I"m just going to drive it. If it blows up screw it, it's one less headache in my life.

.

It hates you... The only real way to diagnos this is to put a dial indicator on the rocker and see if the cam lobe is worn. Either that or just put a cam and lifters in it.
Try some marvel mystery oil and drive it around. My Old Travco will tick for quite some time after it's been sitting. I usually hit it with some of that and it goes away in a day or so.

The good news is (well good for you, bad for me) I'll be heading down to NY for xmas to get tortured by my inlaws so I'll be looking for places to hide. I'm driving the Lemon down so I'll look in my trailer for that tailgate. Want to see if I have a few other things in there.

Thanks Kenny. ):h If the tailgate's there great. If not oh well. Give me a call when your down there digging through the trailer. If your looking to get rid of any more parts from there let me know.

I know the truck hates me. I just drove it around the block 5-6 times and brought it up to pretty damn close to operating temp. Still ticking.

Almost 0 blowby after it was up to temp. Over pressure was just under 40 psi at idle. It's had the same power it's always had and the engine idles nice and smooth. Maybe i pulled the wrong lifter?

I'm just going to run it and change the oil again in 4-500 miles. I did use some Marvel Mystery in that oil change a few weeks ago, almost 1/2 a quart as my buddy filled the filter 1/2 full with the marvel. Haven't driven it except for a few times around the block so the oil has very very few miles on it.

I'll just keep driving it very locally so if it quits on me Triple A can get the damn thing home. If the engine goes on me, oh well i'll rebuild it. Not much else i can do it seems.
