so the concensus is that as long as the license plates dont put you over 26K, the DOT cant do a darn thing about what the manufacturer's suggested GVWR and GCWR is?
I need to go check the trailer tags to see if they list any weights. if so, I am screwed. all towing pickups of ours are either at 22K or 24K on the tags.

That depends on the state. Generally speaking, if your rating on the combined tags of truck and trailer are 10,001 lbs or higher and you are hauling for hire then you are required to follow FMCSA regs, obtain a choffers liscence and medical card dot and mc numbers (mc if hauling freight other than your own), log book if over 100 miles from place of business....... If your combined tags are 26,001 or higher then you are required to have a CDL. If your truck is plated over 26,001 and you pull a trailer or the truck has 3 or more axles then you are required to have an IFTA liscence. Hope that makes some sense.
