Pseudo-Resto 96 K-1500…Um, when was this a good idea?

SSForce will come over this Saturday (2 July) to help me with the door hinge pin replacements. Had to bribe him with a chance to shoot my new Sig Sauer and an SKS I got from 635. Happy to have the help. Besides, guns are funner than fireworks.

I went to start the truck just to do so and it wasn't getting fuel. I gathered correctly that the fuel line leak I noticed was allowing air in. After re doing the leaking 6AN push lock fitting, I needed to get the old fuel out anyway (hose clamp was loose but, just to be sure, re-do it), I used my compressor to blow the line clean back to the tank after adding some biocide (sp) just to stir things up. There's no way to get all the old fuel out without dropping the tank and I wanted to make sure the tank sock was cleared and all the fuel was mixed with the stuff. I stirred it up a couple of three times to be sure. To allow the crap to settle down in the tank before pumping it all out, I went to the local Air Dog vendor for new fuel and water separator filters.
By adding an extension line to the repaired fuel fitting, I ran the pump and filled one 5 Gal. container in no time. No leaks at the repaired fitting but the pressure on it had to be pretty low. Still, even with the fuel jetting out of the 3/8" line and splashing in the jug, there was very little foaming so the air removal function of the Air Dog was quite evident. Also the fuel looked pretty goo for sitting in there a year (clear, light green without any particulates) and the smell was 'normal' too. I've smelled bad fuel before...ugh. I do run "Diesel Service" additives pretty regularly and, IIRC, I had put a generous amount in the tank before taking it off line.
After the first 5 gals, I checked the gauge and it still showed less than 1/4 so I knew there was at least another 5+ in there so, recharge the batteries while I went to get a couple of new 5Gal jugs and filled them with fresh fuel. I still had another 5gal jug but, no use putting 'old [diesel] in new bottles...].' I could hear the fuel getting sucked out of the tank towards the end so I knew I had the majority of the old stuff out.
Added some more Diesel Service fuel treatment and biocide, then the fresh fuel, hit the starter for 15 seconds...rinse and repeat with a couple of coughs and it lit right off on the third try. I've started it for the fun of it a couple of times since and it lights right off. Air Leak solved.
Found the hood hinge for the passenger side (took it off with the old fender) and so I can put the hood back on again whenever.
OPS isn't sending oil pressure readings to the OEM gauge (I have an after market one). I hadn't noticed that before. I'm guessing my anodized AN fitting set up isn't providing a good ground path so I'll have to come up with something there.
Tires on it tomorrow and backing it out of the driveway and going around the block to double check for leaks on the transmission lines.

While I am down we can throw the hood on too. I've missed the sound of the 6.5 and it will be nice to see it back on the road again. Looking forward to some wrench turning an target practice. Gotta get you behind the seat of my 06 with the newly tuned efi live, it puts a big stupid smile on my face.

Today I cleaned up the spare parts laying around and under it.
Attached the front bumper with the minimal amount of bolts just to say it has a bumper.
Made sure things were tight to the frame (radiator core support, cab etc.)
Put the front tires on it, lit the fires, and backed it out of the garage. Funny rachetting noise in reverse, stayed there just coasting too. Oh well, put it in drive and eased it out slowly. No noises (odd ones anyway) going forward. Drove it around the neighborhood and let the heat build up. Still nothing odd. Sure doesn't accelerate or stop like the Touareg but it isn't designed to either.
Got it home, and tried reverse again. No noises. I guess that's a good thing?

SSForce arrived bright and early and we had the door hinge pins replaced in short order. He was able to pin point the 'grinding' noise as the fan contacting the shroud. Only happens in reverse and never happened before so I'm curious what the cause might be for the issue to manifest itself now and why only in reverse. I got an idea it may stem from the core support moving when I replaced the front frame bushings. Easy to double check and, if needed, correct. Other than that, trimming the shroud will solve the issue but, not the cause.
After the doors were done we loaded up the guns and had a good time up in the hills above where I live.
Just as we were about to fire the first round, we had to pause as a guy pulled up and stopped. Don't want to hurt the ears of the unprotected. He'd had to coast down the mountain when his Mitsu Montero (1995) "just quit running" and his brakes were about toast. He asked for a jump though he said it was cranking...Ok, we'll play along. Jump didn't help so we put our diagnostic skills to work as it sounded like it wasn't getting fuel or not sparking. Checked fuses and relays and after a double check, discovered his Fuel Pump Fuse was toast. Of course he had no spares so we swapped over another and it fired right off. High Fives all around. His buddy arrived so we didn't have to turn into a Uber service too. Back to the shooting stuff, followed by a joy ride in SSForces EFI Live tuned 06 Duramax and a more sedate but off road romp in my VW Touareg, it was time to call it a day.
Happy 4th everyone.

Glad to hear all went well.

Yes on thecore support being off. Mine did the same thing, only in reverse, and way worse reverse backing up a hill, after cleaning the stack and doing bushings. I was able to look close at mine and figure where the old location was and adjust it back- solved the rub. Double check engine and transmission mounts just incase.

Thanks Will.
It was the core support but, it wasn't "off" so much as it just needed the Bushing bolts a lot tighter. I was able to get a few more turns with the 1/2" drive ratchet and that brought everything to where it needed to be. I did shift the shroud a little bit to be safe, top and bottom attachment points. Put it in reverse and no issues with noise.
Put the hood back on it and drove it up the hill with Thing 1 (oldest son) and did some more shooting as he missed out Saturday. Time to fire off the grille and burn some meat.
Happy 4th of July.

Door hinge pins can be done by one person fairly easily and it's not a big project, either. I just used my 3 1/2 ton floor jack as a "third hand" to support the weight of the door at the rear of the door, then used a drift punch and my 22oz ball pein hammer to drive out the bottom pin and drive in and seat the new one. Repeated for the upper one. Tight room to swing a hammer, worked best with door nearly wide open. Had both sides done in about a half hour.

Any excuse for a get together is a good one. Besides, its more fun working together, especially when one is teaching the old dog new tricks. Me being the old dog in this instance. Then to go out and shoot some old guns and being able to return the favor by passing on some shooting pointers. Win Win.

I realized I haven't posted any pictures, for what they worth, of late.

Fender repaired and installed.

Truck finally running but needing more parts replaced.

Hood, temporary grill and lighting installed. The poor lighting almost makes it look good except until a closer look reveals the paint is really quite scuffed.

4th of July and I finally get to fly my favorite flag.

So what did you do on my Birthday, @Paveltolz ?
Not sure what day of the year is your birthday. If it is 4 July, then I went for a nice drive, grilled some steaks, watched 1776 and then cringed as the neighborhood seemingly spontaneously combusted with illegal fireworks until very late...for the sixth night in a row. Glad there's more homes around so there's more maniacs with no common sense and a love for pyrotechnics s/. I the fireworks up when my son came home from Afghanistan with PTSD. One too many IEDs.

That be my birthday. Turned the Double Nickel. I hear you on the (illegal) fireworks (pun intended), had people somewhere in my neighborhood that had obviously made a run over to Missouri for a load of stuff illegal here in Nebraska. 1:30 AM is NOT the time to let off what sounded like either a Hoffman Device or a Grenade Simulator (most likely either an M-400 or M-600 from Mizzou) in a sleeping residential neighborhood. Nineteen years in, I had my fare share of things that go boom loudly to play with, from firing live Claymores, C-4, Det Cord, 81mm and 4.2 mortars, 105 and 155 Howitzers and of course my favorite, the main gun on my tank (although that 20mm Vulcan was a hoot to shoot, too!) that fireworks just don't have the appeal they did when I was younger.

Speaking of fireworks... My son unknowingly demonstrated what a mortar shell looks like put in the tube upside down.... shall we say... Dad something is wr........o......n....g...!!!!!

Went out to start it up as I'd been gone for a couple of weeks and discovered a couple of issues.
1. I forgot that I had given the ECM to Bill Heath while at the salt flats a while ago and he'd forgotten about it in the truck so it wasn't reflashed or returned. It was a moot point anyway because...
2. I didn't close the glove compartment when I took the ECM out and the small, LED light in there, having been left on for almost 30 days, had taken the batteries all the way down.
Charger is back on it now and we'll see how long it takes to bring them back up. Could be with this second deep drain I might be in for some new ones. We'll see.

Double whammy. Gubmint cospiricy I think who did you make mad at work:wacky:
In my work, I often stand accused of fostering a "Gubmint" Conspiracy by a very vocal group (and thankfully small minority of like minded), so it could be anyone from Cliven Bundy's ilk to Pete Santilli (who I have on voice mail threatening my co-worker) or his followers...yawn!

Back from another series of trips. Batteries charged right up, not like before when they sat for close to two years. I had Bill re-do my tune since he offered and finally got a chance to run it. This one is a little happier than the last tune but I need to go over the hubs cause even coasting downhill, it feels like it is dragging. I know the tires are a bit low too. Still, it's nice to run around a little with it. Young Women's group at church held a free car wash tonight (no donations accepted...free = free for a change). I took the truck since it's been a couple of years without a real wash (rain doesn't count and the neighbors' sprinklers don't either). Even in its half baked state, it gets a lot of looks and positive comments from the dads.
