Project 350HP update

Now that I am feeling a little better I was able to get a little work done today on the truck, and no my wife didn't bug me one bit. ):h She actually likes to watch me work on vehicles, I hope that is a feeling that lasts!

My wife says that she gets turned on when she sees me working on the truck and saving $ that she can spend somewhere else. :mad2: The only problem is 5 children later she gets frustrated when I'm working on the truck while the kids driver her crazy. That turn on lasts about 2 seconds. lol This is what you have to look forward to.

Is that one set regulated to 8psi from factory, or is it adjustable?

How much PSI do you desire to get to the IP?

I had them preset it to 15 psi from the factory but it is one of there new units with the adjustable pressure regulator built in so we can fine tune it if need be. We are also going to be running a Danin Optix fuel pressure gauge to monitor fuel pressure on the fly. I found when running the quarter mile in my truck that I ran out of fuel the last hundred feet or so even with a better than factory fuel pump. With this new pump set at 15psi I doubt we will drop to even 14psi under full load. These AirDog systems are the best on the market and almost an over kill for the needs of the 6.5 but since the were kind enough to sponsor the pump I am not going to turn it down. Plus they found a 35hp gain in midrange power on a D-Max just from having the air removed completely from the fuel, so who knows what it will do for a 6.5.

I also wanted to post a better picture of the aFe Stage 2 intake now that it is clean. The filter is not aFe, I replaced it with a larger unit from S&B filters. The S&B filter has more filter pleats, better flow rates, and overall better filtration. I did some fab work to the aFe intake to make it fit closer to the fender hole for better cold air intake. 635 has a functional induction hole in the fender to allow better fresh air flow to the filter. He also added in hood vents to allow more hot air to escape before it can makes its way to the air filter. Once I put the rubber liner back on the filter box and line the outside wall with heat wrap it should allow for this unit to function more as it was inteded to.

Sounds like the only thing your really buying with the afe is the premolded intake tube

Well I found that because each 6.5 has slight differences in how high the engine sets as well as side to side position. It makes the aFe system not fit perfectly in every 6.5. In my 1995 K2500 it fit perfect, in 635's truck it needed major modifications to fit. So if you are planning on going with an aFe stage 2 kit just be prepared that you might have to do a little cutting to get the proper fit.

I've heard other people not liking the cone filter it comes with also.

The filter it comes with isn't bad because aFe makes quality filters, I ran one for many years. I just worked with S&B for a long time and was sold on there filters. The overall filtration benefits are not a whole lot different but I wanted a larger filter with more pleats.

Got some work done on the truck today so figured I would give you all some pics and a status report.

1. Removed factory fuel filter housing.
2. Installed new FTB fuel filter housing in its new location
3. Re-Installed intake manifold w/ new manifold pressure pickup points

The last picture is of the inside of 635's extrude honed intake manifold before I put the top back on it. I still need to run the electical for the new AirDog system along with the fuel lines but the majority of the under the hood work is done, just a few small things to finish up. The brass fitting on the aFe intake system is the injection port for the propane system once I run the feed line to it.

Ian, I noticed the Balance Flow system available for Hummers (for like 800 bucks!) that is made by heath but distributed by another vendor is on the truck... Everyone (include Bill I think!) says "works well but isn't necessary"... is this true, I have trouble believing that if you have it on this truck. What are your thoughts on this piece?

Also, why bother modifying the stock filter to the FTB standards when you could buy a simple screw-on style from summit for around 30 bucks that could handle up to half inch hoses? Do you want the WIF light and the heater stuff or were there other reasons?

I will call Charles the owner of the company and see what he has to say. However it really makes no difference to us if it does or doesn't have a built in heater. We are looking for a consistant fuel pressure with no air/water in the fuel and that is our main concern. Maintaining factory equipment is a plus so long as it can be made better as we have been able to do in this case.
