Project 350HP update

Guys, if it were anyone else other than Ian I would be worried about running a smaller oil return line. Ian knows what he is doing, if you get an A-Team Turbo you must use the oil feed line and I would not even consider using anything other than what the kit calls for. I have tried to make the kit as dependable as possible . Comments from current owners are always welcome.

It is but the ID is still larger than the oil feed line so the turbo is not having any issues.

Keep a close eye out for any oil sneaking out the shaft seals & showing up as smoke.

The oil headed into the turbo is under pressure. Ideally, the oil exit tube pressure should be 0, to get that hot, frothy mess away from the seals as easily as possible.

The low mount turbo setups put some effort into designing a little sump below the turbo & some type of scavenging pump to get the oil back into the reservoir or sump. The oil drain basically needs to be the easiest path the oil can go.

Beautiful build! Not trying to be critical, just cautious, as a 90 bend right on the turbo oil outlet is a general design no no. If it works, it works. If you do see any evidence of oil getting past the shaft seals, it probably won't have damaged anything, just need to improve the outlet flow path.

P.S. I am getting married this weekend so all work on the truck will be very slow untill around next Tuesday. Just a little FYI.

You'll be back Tuesday? Man your new wife is never going to let you forget getting back to the truck after such a short marriage. My wife would never let me forget it.

Congrats!

Just a little advice... Your wife is always right even when she is wrong. :D And never tell her she is wrong just bite your tongue.

6.5quest wedding pics.

I had the rare opportunity to photograph Ian's wedding.

Hey Ian/Ted what kind of turbo shield is that you have installed? I've been looking and thems some expensive things. Anyone else have one?

Also where does the turbo oil supply come from?

You will have to wait for Ian to answer where he got the wrap. I bought it but I can't remember where it was from, maybe Summit. The oil supply line for the turbo comes from the back of the block.

The block is a 6.2 block. Likely one of the early blocks with oil pressure sender location on the back flange like a gasser and no output for the turbo at the front. To get turbo oil supply you T in at the OPS hole.

Ok, so I am finally back after a very long weekend plus I had some things to do for the Navy early this week. 635 and I ran the truck very hard and found no turbo oil issues, however it is a new thing we are doing so if we do sense any issues with it we can simply upgrade the line size. We used oversized end fittings to support bigger lines if need be. The turbo wrap I used on this turbo and the ones for the Bonneville truck came from JEGS. It is a very nice kit and comes with a lot of extra material, I found it helps to moisten the first layer in order for it to stretch better and after it dries it will have conformed to the shape you wanted.

I have been fighting some type of cold or flu crap so I hope to get feeling better and back on the truck soon. It is getting close to our deadline and I want to make sure this thing is dialed in before I ship out. Once I am done with training and get to my first post I am going to have the time to work on articles for other forum members trucks. I really want to start pushing the 6.5 on the diesel magazines, I think everyone here would love to see at least one 6.5 in every issue. I have been getting the support from a few top magazines so I hope this becomes a trend.

Thanks for everyones support in terms of the wedding and the project. I will update as soon as I can.

Ian

Ian,

Your post isn't as long winded and detailed as normal. We all know why. The wife has started to crack the whip already hasn't she. :D

Congratulations on your marriage.
635's truck looks and sounds fantastic and I know he's gotta be tickled pink at all the success you guys are having. Keep up the good work. I also wish you luck in your career in the Navy and I hope your desire for the time to write articles materializes but I have a feeling that Uncle Sam may have other plans for your 'spare time.'

Thanks Ian, I purchased that same turbo blanket from another site, good to know it'll work so well. Summit has some really nice ones but expensive.

I'm really interested to hear what RPMs you see peak HP and torque at.

I will try to keep this as short winded as possible. :smile5:

Now that I am feeling a little better I was able to get a little work done today on the truck, and no my wife didn't bug me one bit. ):h She actually likes to watch me work on vehicles, I hope that is a feeling that lasts!

I mounted the new AirDog system inside the tool box and removed the old fuel filter since we will be putting in one with the FTB mod and will be relocating it to the drivers side of the manifold. 635 wants this thing to look as beautiful as it runs so we are working on changing every line possible over to braided stainless. When it is done the inside of his engine compartment will be a head turner. I can't post many pics but here is one of the AirDog system.
