Project 141 Build

K here is a video of a cold start this morning. It still smokes and chugs like no tomorrow. I did put in used glow plugs when i built the engine olny caues i had them laying around and dident wanna put in the duraterms till november ish when it starts really getting cold. Now i dont think this much smoke can be blamed on the glow plugs being bad since i did check every one of them with an ohm meter before installing. I also dont think it can be blamed on the lower compression since my other truck has even lower compression then this one and it smoke for about half a min then clears right up. This one smokes for about 5 min then clears up to normal. The truck has awesome throttle responce and power once up to operating temp reminds me of driving my duramax, just the raw bottem end power it has now. but still runs rough. My other engine i built using a 300,000km plus used injection pump and original harmonic balancer runs 10 times as smoother and has easyer starting then this one. so when i went to hop into my truck and go to work shortly after the video i had a low coolant light on :( i havent had a chance to look around under the hood yet but it took almost 4 liters of water to fill it. Im gonna need some expert opinions on this one...... thanks guys

You should check the following items on the scanner:
cold idle rpm
cold idle timing
cold idle fuel rate
warm idle rpm
warm idle timing
warm idle fuel rate

It may be the IP was build was not ideal for smooth operation, and the tuning could be a factor. That lope, sounds like the idle rpms are too low and the fuel rate may be too low. Does it clear up and give you a cold idle if you press down the accelerator?

Glow plugs could account for hard starting but not more than a minute of smoke. Hoping you are not getting water in the cylinders to slow the warm up and cause the white smoke

timing. mine did that when chain stretched. does it smell like raw diesel?

Did you ohm out your ECT sensor? There is a table of values in the library for various temperatures. If it isn't working right, it won't shift your advance to match cold temps and you'll run too retarded - lots of smoke.

Well i fired it up this morning still had the same amount of smoke and fish biting rattle. I found the coolant leak its at the heater core pipe to the coolant cross over, its dripping pretty good. Its a BIG RELIEF off my chest..... dident wanna go tearing this engine apart after 500km of use. Im going to ohm out my ECT sensor today or tomorrow to see if its working properly. But even if i let the truck sit for an hour or so when up to operating temp it still has a rough start with a few seconds of white smoke. Also i did check the cold start up smoke it definatly smells like raw diesel fule. And pressing the accelerator did not clear up any smoke just puffed out more.

I was nearing that 1000-1100 when i let off. Im real curious to see how the water/meth injection cools it down.

The very first page with the piccy's The engine (Yellow) has the rear facing the camera
The casting number is on the LH side of the piccy last 3 digits are 506 Cast in right above the bell housing flange

Here is a pic of the tranny side the day i got the engine. I dident know they had 2 casting numbers on these blocks

im running the newest pump out there. I was considering trying the 5068 but i would half to send the chip back down to buddy for re tuneing and what not so i just decided to use a more common one. I also bought a new pmd with this pump its the grey one. I wonder if it will be any better....... I pretty much have the engine done just half to put the power steering bracket and pump back on and mount the turbo and a few other little things. I got the rest of the parts sand blasted and painted tonight so now its just a matter of installing them.

I had a question where could one buy a DS4-5942 injection pump? Are you pretty much forced to buy it from a diesel fuel injection shop? Any other places and price? Seems like it's a good one to buy w/ all the updates and latest, greatest parts. Thanks.

Im not to sure where to find em. I was originaly gonna rebuild my 5521 or what ever it was but when i went to the shop he had the 5942 sitting on the shelf just rebuilt so i gave him my old one for a core and got that one.

Thanks for the reply. My friend's 94 Suburban looks like it will be in need of an IP here very soon so that's why I asked. I have a local diesel fuel injection shop that I can call to ask and get a price on one. They are a major Stanadyne dealer so they know those pumps upside down and around, just curious if they would know the 5942 if I asked them about it.

Yes, I do know that 1994 had the 2 different spec pumps with the 5068 and 5521. He has a 5521 injection pump on the engine now, which is off his original 234k mileage engine to the Suburban. That's now laying on my storage building's floor because we had to put another engine in it due to that block being cracked because of no starter support bracket (common problem w/ these engines, but easily avoidable if you are not lazy to put it back on). And unfortunately wasn't the case with this engine, but we bought a good, used long block engine w/ 120k miles from another 1994 truck that had the 5068 pump originally mounted to it from the factory. Wasn't much of a problem though because we bought it w/o the injection pump and switched all our parts to the engine. Thanks for the heads up though tanman.
