Project 141 Build

I just traced the wire back to the main harness
No damage to it at all. The olny spot that melted was the light harness in the bumper. Is there anything else to check for?

1. make sure you have power (12v) to the small wire at the solenoid when you turn the key to 'start'. (need 2 guys)
2. if you have power, your solenoid is hooped. If you don't, then start moving back toward the key.
3. check to make sure you have power to the key block ... buddy posted a wiring diagram earlier in another thread.

(actually, that whole thread is informative, given your problem. Spend a minute and give it a read)

4. make sure the neutral safety start switch works... it should show full continuity when in park or neutral.

When troubleshooting wiring, always start at the impact point (starter solenoid) and trace backwards to where it starts.

How did you wire in the second alternator? Was that on there before? And just to make sure, your batteries are wired in parallel not series right? Would be bad to have 24V rather than 12V. The tachometer runs off of the alternator, which one has the two wires, or did you split that wiring to each of them, because only one should have the tach wire and both need the exciter.

Hey thanks. And the second alternator was wired in before and I had
No issues. I dident know the tack runs off the alternator eather. That would probley explane why it wasent working caues i olny had one hooked up for the test run. I think I went right to the battery. The melt down happend before I even attempted to start the truck. I had the battery hooked for about 2 min then I heard a pop and a whole whack of smoke it stopped before I even got the battery unhooked. The wires just melted in half, the horn fuse was also popped. Im trying to source out a whole new light harness for the front. I called the dealership and they don't carry them anymore........

I dont suppose the headlight was full of water or something like that? Surprising any load that high could make it to the headlight without blowing the fuse before it, unless it was too high of voltage that caused it.

Just make sure the positives of the batteries are hooked together, that would be in parallel, 12V total.

Did you by chance knock off your ground to your lights with removing everything. My 91 headlight setup has one ground per side just adding my 2 cents hope you figure it out and looks nice, cant wait to get mine running.I guess where you are you don't need A/C.... Wish it was like that here.

Either the wiring is just plain shot or the fuses aren't doing their jobs. If the truck was off, then were the headlights off too? There shouldn't even be 12v on the wires to the headlights if the switch was off.

Good looking engine though.

I agree with your starting issues. It's going to be the solenoid isn't working or the starter is wired incorrectly. The keyed wire goes to the S terminal on the starter and the positive and negative to their respective terminals correct? The park neutral safety switch is going to be suspect as well. The ignition switch should be tested and all wiring inbetween. Take it point to point and wire by wire. Take your time, this stuff is really simple once you get your mind wrapped around it.

HAHA... You really think that its winter 12 months out of the year north of the 49th parallel? HAHA

Here in Canada, daytime running lights are law (at least for this generation and newer trucks) so he would have lights when he fired up the truck.

Well, when its hotter after the sun goes down than your peaks all year it could be an understandable conclusion :) I live in a place where I never use A/C, although I dont really run the heater much either.

I don't need A/C either, and its been 100 degrees here in NC for like 2 months straight. Wait a second... you live in Canada... don't you guys have unicorns and it rains gumdrops every third tuesday?

Then it would appear his wiring is shot.

Ahh, that's what I was thinking but wasn't sure. Can you notice a difference running an intercooler? Do you still have room for A/C condenser too?

I don't know if there is a big difference I bought the truck from a member on here and the truck already had the intercooler rigged up. As for the AC the intercooler is mounted under my bumper so they arnt in the way of each other.

Truck is still sitting in the shop. I was gonna haul it to red deer last Monday but the tranny shop said they wouldent be able to install it for a week and not to bother bringing it. So I will be hauling it there probley Sunday or Monday. Should have it back and driving it by the end of next week I'm thinking...... At least I hope lol but yeah I will be posting the results of the delta cam and low compression as soon as I get some drive time in!!! And figure out that cluster f*ck of an electrical mess.
