Poor Boy Special 6.5 Refresh

Why do I have to be so cheap?! The fan arrived damaged, with 2 bent blades! :mad2: It wasn't from shipping either, as the box was in great shape. I don't know why anyone would ship something like this! I've opened a case with the seller, so hopefully he'll get me refunded quickly, but in the meantime I guess I'll order a new one. Pics below.

Matt

I have had days like that - just cheap enough to do the job... My fan looked worse than that, but, we mangled it ourselves. Pried what was left of it out from between the block and AC compressor. :skep:

35 PSI on the boost gauge is steep for a gas engine I would think. More like a modern low compression diesel that runs high boost.

Your right WarWagon, 35psi would be very high on a gas engine, but the reason I said the gauge was for a gasser, is because it registers Vacuum as well as Boost.

Nice gauge install

I like it.

Hard to go wrong with the stainless. Good looking engine bay too, those red valve covers stand out!

Thanks for all the kind words. They're appreciated. Once I get my cooling system sorted out so the engine will stay cool while towing, I'll be curious to see where the EGT's are when it has a good heavy load on it. I can see they're not an issue when I'm not loaded, as a WOT run to around 100 mph, with the ac on, only got me about 1100. However, at the end of that run the engine temp was about 215. Hopefully I'll get that taken care of very soon. Thanks

Matt

I put my gauges in the same place with aluminum diamond tread. It looked pretty good except I didn't like how I had to lean over to see the top of the gauges. I installed an overhead console and I may put them in there. have not decided yet.

Looks good!
Thanks

Yea, its not as visible as I'd like, but not bad. Thanks

Well, this truck is just about finished. (At least for now. :hihi:) I'll be installing the 9 blade cooling fan soon, but other than that, its running, and driving great. I put the grill gaurd back on it, as well as transferring the tool box, bed mat, and bed rails from my 84 onto it. I found some good used tires for it. BFG Rugged Trails up front, and Toyo Open Countrys in the back. All are 10 ply rated. Its shaping up to be a good work truck, and one I didn't have to break the bank on. Here are a couple recent pics. Thanks

I got the 9 blade steel fan installed, as well as the modified fan clutch. This thing really Blows!:hihi: This aftermarket clutch doesn't look nearly as robust as the factory one does, but you can't tell by the way it moves the air! Here are a few pics, and a video.

Just wondering how that compares to the metal hummer fan-what's the diameter and pitch of that fan if anyone knows.

Mine is 19" diameter, I'll have to get the blade count and pitch tomorrow. I know the numbers stamped in it are
6003064
ECS 41224 AQ

Don't know if that means anything to anyone.

wow, that that really roars. if i ever get mine back together, i will have to do this mod too. where did you get the parts?
The fan clutch I used was a Four Seasons 36754. Here is a great deal on a factory AC Delco, that I wish I had seen before I bought mine. http://www.ebay.com/itm/221518944727?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Here is the link for the fan. http://www.ebay.com/itm/141260584046?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

I don't know the specs on the blade pitch, but the fan is a 20", just like my factory 6 blade was.
The #'s on the fan blade are:
918840 D498
15992650

The GM part # for the fan 15-80730
I could probably dig up a protractor, and figure out the degree the blades are mounted at, but they have a curve to them, so that wouldn't tell the whole story.
Matt

Yeah, didn't even think about the curve being a big factor. I think your right the ol protractor isn't going to give the info.

It's ok though, a little birdie in the snow told me where I will be spending my $ soon on cooling accessories...

I'm going to start building my 4" exhaust! :arms: I scraped up a few dollars to buy the supplies for my new exhaust. I'm currently running a Diamond Eye downpipe that I cut the back flange off of, and welded a 3" pipe with a 3" In/Out Flowmaster 2 chamber muffler, and a turndown. I bought the DP from Leroy back when I rebuilt the engine, and muffler was just an old leftover from a previous project.
The plan is to have the exhaust exit about 1.5 feet in front of the right rear tire. The exhaust will go from 3" to 4" about 1 foot sooner than it would with a Diamond Eye exhaust, as I'll be cutting the downpipe back to where it just leaves the engine compartment underneath, and installing the 3" to 4" adapter. I've already ordered the muffler http://www.ebay.com/sch/sis.html?_n...l Muffler 24 Body XS2772&_itemId=161174228705
It should be here Friday. I have an account with Orielly Auto Parts, and get a pretty decent discount, so the rest of the parts I got there. Here is the price list.

1- Muffler $55
2- 4" tight radius elbows $21 each
1- 3" to 4" adapter $12
1- 10 foot stick of aluminized 4" exhaust pipe. $59
2- 4" band exhaust clamps. $8 each

Actually, if I figure in the cost of the DP a few months ago, the I could have bought a complete Diamond Eye Exhaust from Leroy! Oh well, thats the way it goes. I never do things the easy way!:hihi: Here are a few pics of the parts I have so far. Thanks

Matt

That's what I ran into when I tried to build an exhaust for mine. I just end up w/ diamond eye. The idea of it being exactly what you want is nice though.

Yes it is nice to set it up the way I want to. I like the idea of it exiting a little before the right rear wheel.

The muffler came in today, and it looks like a very well built piece. Its even stainless steel, although I'm sure its not the highest quality stainless, as I'm sure its from China. At $55, it was less than half the cost of any of the name brand diesel mufflers. Here are a couple pics.

I got the exhaust finished. I'm very surprised at how much quieter it is, compared to the old 3" with a Flowmaster, and turndown. Its got a decent bark when I step down on the loud pedal, but its very mellow in the cab when cruising. My welder won't stretch out to my lift, so my plan was to mock things up, and take them back in the shop to weld, but this proved to be a real pain in the rear, so I welded up what I could in the shop, and pulled out the torch, steel rod, and acetylene welded the rest while on the lift. This type of weld never turns out as nice as a Mig, but it will hold. I also had to use a piece of flex pipe to keep the exhaust from getting to close to things. Luckily I had some laying around from a previous project on a bus. Overall I'm happy, and it seems like the boost comes on quicker as well. Here are some pics.
