P400 coming to Alaska to replace a failed Diesel Depot engine

So I talked to chance today and this may not happen. evidently they stopped production for an upgrade for the military and are not sure when it will resume. He bought an 08 in the meantime

Newb here. I know this is an older post. I am looking at either purchasing a P400 or 6500 Optimizer. I was looking more at the Optimizer because of the Cast Aluminum oil pan issue not fitting in a 4x4. Looks like Peninsular fixed that. Do you have any more pics of it installed and if possible some from the under side. I would like to see how that oil pan worked out. Thanks.

Here is the bad news. Any Humvees will be scrapped at the end of service life except for the hundred or so SF97 ones the government released to the public some years back. Evenually all 1/4 million military trucks will be scrapped. They only made 10,775 civilian H1s and 1/3 of those are history now from accidents etc.
Even if you did manage to buy a military truck it still belongs to the american gov and they will take it back with zero compensation when they find it. And when i say scrapped i mean no parts to sell.
Fortunately surplus engines and takeouts are in the chain along with tires and wheels and there are still new parts available from AMG.
As for getting an actual P400, good luck as they are getting harder to find.

Wow. Had not heard about the demise of the / limited availability of the p400. With the govt scrapping all military vehicles our source of 6.5 motors could end. Almost makes one want to start storing 6.5s for the day when they are gone. When we were looking for a 6.5 diesel we had a hard time finding a truck. When we found the 95 GMC K2500 we snatched it up not running. Not many 6.5s for sale and it seems like around here the prices are steady going up. People are asking 8-10k for clean low mileage trucks that are nearly 20yrs old!

The goverment is giving the hummers to the PD and FD for a grand a pop. The police in my town got 2 and so did the Fire Dept. The are 86 models with 6.2. I think we have one police officer in town so why they got 2 I don't know. Good price though.

Yep there are not many good 6.5s left. Time to start looking at the broken ones and welding them. At one time folks would not bother pre heating and welding cast engine blocks but they are becoming so scarce it has become a worthwhile venture to consider. It is also very doable if you have a good oven to preheat the blocks in. Even lock n stitch, and spray welding is becoming a worthwhile process. Who would have ever thought!!

FWIW. Have a P-400 in the order pipeline with Peninsular and pans for 4x4's (K series) are available but add cost; also prices moved up a bit since this thread was started (not publishing pricing as I am a believer that it is not fair to hold a vendor responsible for yesterday's valuations). Current lead time for the P-400 is 3 - 3-1/2 weeks from the time of deposit payment. I will do a write-up with details of the P-400 search where one interesting thing was that WW Williams farmed me to a local truck / semi / big rig repair station (and knew this was for my Suburban) only for the repair station to come back with " . . . our supplier does not offer that [6.5] engine."

In terms of the P-400 getting above OE power levels, according to Peninsular, it can get to its rated 250 HP with the DS4 and programming of the OBD II. (Yes, I know there is plenty of commentary that it will only generate OE power with OE parts, but don't shoot the messenger ;) ). Toward getting to the 250 HP level, the 4L80E starts looking like a weak link and Peninsular's recommendation was to rebuild it with current parts and preferably upgrade it to a 4L85E.

Even if you did manage to buy a military truck it still belongs to the american gov and they will take it back with zero compensation when they find it.

Am not sold that this will happen for 100% of the population. Recovery does sometimes happen when individuals salvage items (commonly Warbirds) and try to use them for something other than a static display, but suspect this is not likely to happen for a Humvee (or engine) when title actually passes via one of the auction houses (ex: Gov Liquidators, GSA, etc). Best defense against losing an asset is keeping the paperwork to show a chain of ownership.

Newb here.

Welcome to TTS!!! :fest30:

A China block is a hell of a lot better option than than trying to fix a cracked GM block,... and a lot cheaper too;)

This is something I'm wondering about.

A brand new 6.5l chinese bare block is $1050 + shipping + import taxes and duties... AFAIK, the seller is also able to privide camshaft & crankshaft

I'll try to gather more informations about block alloy if he agrees sharing informations.
