P400 coming to Alaska to replace a failed Diesel Depot engine

Now that I think about it GM would most likely have stamped out a new firewall. It would have been alot of work to retrofit one.

So you can now get a P400 with oil pan to fit into a 4x4 truck from the factory?

What is the oil pan like? How many qts of oil does it hold?

Nope. Hummer cast al pans only.

Unless it's a new development. Like in the last two weeks since I was talking to my GEP contact.

Bill was talking loosely about a p400 when i was there this summer. While he didn't come right out and say it, I got the impression he was going to source p400's or at least a pan.

Like I said, that was only my impression, he never actually said it....

Only pic I can find of the Holden's firewall:

HoldenSubBody.jpg

Good luck finding another. Apparently, there were only about 400-500 Holden 6.5 Suburbans made over the entirety of the GMT400 model years. I know a guy on a couple other forums that goes by the screen name Hquick (howard). He's an Aussie and has a Holden suburban, albeit a gasser. He might be able to get better pics of a Holden Suburban firewall.

If you've reworking things like the heater box for RH drive, a bit of firewall massaging isn't that big of a deal. I could do it in a couple hours in the garage with the MIG and some shears. It's no where near as hard as people make it out to be. The big question is how far you have to get into the HVAC component's space. Then again, they may have cast a special lower manifold to move the whole thing forward. Who knows what you'll see when you're dealing with non North American vehicles....

Leroy; I'm willing to bet the ducts are where they are because they used an s-10 blazer dash instead of a GMT 400. That's where they are on an s-10 IIRC....
sure it is possible, but why? the center mount is a 2.5" Cast outlet for the exhaust, and there are not alot (read none) aftermarket turbo upgrades for the center-mount system... penn. uses a center mount, but it is a totally different animal..... the only advantage to it is it made the best numbers for the 6.5l (because of quick moving, equally balanced exhaust) for me, it is not enough of a gain to warrant the work invovled... maybe just the cool factor...

I wasn't saying for a local yokel to do it it would be worth it.

GM probably did it because that's what they had available at the Mexico plant, or maybe they thought it would be better received overseas as a center mount. GM's not concerned with "upgrades", they want it to work long enough to get it out of warranty obligations.

Probably as simple as the reason they butchered an s-10 dash in there instead of a GMT400 dash. What they had available and easy to plop in there.

Or maybe it was seen as an early design/experimental exercise done on what was a limited production run.

We'll probably never know for sure....

Merry Xmas

When we measured with the metal hummer pan in GMT400 2wd, it was missing less than an inch. Would need to go 1 1/2-2" to have clearance to allow motor mount movement and wear....

I'm keenly interested in the oil pan solution. I assume a lift kit does not help here?

No, it is between pan and the cross-member. Either modify pan or modify cross-member. We considered the cross-member, but were too pressed for time. So ended up just using the regular 1piece seal pan.

Good news! The engine plant is able to help us out with an engine for you. They have just issued a further delay in the form of an indefinite hold on the build of the P400 due to some changes being made, however they continue the build of the other engine and that is what we can get for you. This other engine is exactly the same as the P-400 including the forged steel crank, redesigned block, heads and etc.
This engine differs only in that it is built with individual, heavy duty, nodular iron main caps with specially designed bolts to hold them in place. This is a substantially excellent unit and one a guy can count on.

Your cost, delivered to a Seattle area, commercial address is $7378.

I will need to know as soon as possible in order to get it for you at this price.

Bill

Hello Chance

The engine plant is not building any more of these until early in Feb. I am checking with a few buddies in the business to see if we can get our hands on one for you. Because of the holidays, this is not happening as quickly for me as I would like.

Here are two picts of my P-400 on the pallet before install. I had Peninsular modify the cast aluminum oil pan for a 4X4 install. They told me they have a jig setup to cut the pan and re-weld it together. Sorry these are the only two picts I have of the motor showing anything of the oil pan.

It was purchased from Peninsular, a long block p-400 will run about $7,000.00 +/- a little. My total invoice was more since I added injectors, dual thermostat, HO water pump, modification of the pan, and new exhaust manifolds. The modification of the oil pan was about $300.00 and worth every penny. The pan should add some structural support to the lower end, I am not able to work with cast aluminum nor do I want to do anything to inhibit it's functions.

I did not do the install due to my lack of time to personally do the job. It went well, just a couple of things to know.

The bell housing bolts are metric.
We had to modify the bell housing cover (due to the square oil pan).

Otherwise it is straight forward.

Good luck

Brian
