Occasional rod knock?

The sound didn't come thru on my little camera too well,
here's a guy on another site having the exact same issue,
mine sounds like his, but gets quieter at speeds above idle.
On a side note, I've put over 500 miles on the truck since getting back
on the road, no issues except the sound, and MAY be losing a TINY
amount of coolant - keeping a close eye on that

Try using a stethascope or long screwdriver and place it on the valve cover or area that the noise is coming from. Then check opposite cover or part for difference in noise or pitch of sound. I could hear the ticking at idle and if it is a lifter, the oil pressure goes up with rpm and maybe pumping up the lifter or engine noise at higher rpm is masking it. If the noise comes from anywhere other than the v/cover you can rule out lifters. Also check the I/p and front cover for noises that are out of sync with the normal noise of the parts you are listening to. Chances are it is a lifter that has bled down due to fuel in the oil. If thats the case a qt. of lucas will help cushion the blow and might even help pump up the offending lifter/s. Hope this points you in the right direction.

Mine kinda sounds like a lifter - but doesn't do it until it's
warmed up. Sure would be a pain to remove the intake,
inj lines, cover, then reinstall lines and start it to find out
which lifter it is - gonna make a huge mess trying to warm it up!
I may try some snake oil next time I change the oil.
I do have a stethoscope, that's my next step

Yeah warm, like when the oil thins out. Even more if you run synthetic. I would do an oil change now even if you just did it recently, You will always have old contaminated oil in the system. IE; oil cooler ,block and cooler lines. Need to make sure you get all the fuel out of the oil if possible. It's not good for the bearings either. It's still cheaper and easier than lifter job, if they haven't collapsed already,You may be able to save them with fresh oil change and 1qt. lucas.

Update: still got the sound, like a light metal on metal "ting".
Doesn't do it cold, doesn't always do it hot, kind of intermittent.
Got the stethoscope out, checked everywhere I could get to.
Sound (appears) to be coming from the turbo, on the exhaust
side..... nowhere else is the sound as pronounced.
Plan now is to warm it until sound starts, remove the filter
elbow so I can access the turbo, shut it down, have my son
hold the impeller with a wrench to prevent it from spinning,
and listen - if sound is gone, turbo will be too :smile5:
If sound is still present, back to square one....
Had to use the wife's Tahoe to tow the Jeep and trailer this
weekend, cause the noise on the truck has me spooked.
This has to get found and fixed, or I gotta trade up.
No point in having a truck if I don't trust it to go on a trip.

The reason I mentioned injectors is because the truck I have was diagnosed by a mechanic as having a cracked flex plate. I eventually replace the injectors and noise went away.

Mech. said PO brought truck to his shop complaining of noise up until about 1500 RPM, then they didn't notice it. He never started into any repairs because they picked up the truck unannounced. He still has a key!

Wish there were a few of you local to me, have a noise
pinpointing party.
Gonna pull the heat shields, try to verify nothing is touching.
Held turbo shaft still while engine ran, I think sound was still
there - I do have shaft play, may have to remove turbo to
look for shiny / worn spots.
And the AC leak I have been hunting, turns out to be the
compressor shaft (way better than another evap core)

This sounds like my engine--A ting ting ting from the turbo area. I believe missy goodwench mentioned something about it being a common noise in some of these engines, If you dwell on it ,it will drive you nuts. I would notice it when I would drive to a outside bank teller. The noise would amplify off the wall of the building. I've lived with it for years. The only way some one else might hear it is if I bring it to their attention and they "tune in". It has caused no harm, nor gotten worse. It is a very faint sound and intermittent as well---

I doubt it's serious, I've put over a thousand miles on it
since reinstalling it - but it didn't make this noise before :mad2:
I WILL find it

I've had it for 4 years and 55,000 miles. Still there if you'tune in' to it. Every now and again you have to remind yourself it is a diesel.

i had a loose turbo clamp and it literally sounded like the truck was going to explode when i accerlated. tightened it up and it went away.

I know, I like the diesel sound - that's not what I'm hearing though.
I just started a 30 day turnaround at work, so it'll be a little while
before I get to do very much - on the plus side (if you can call it that)
I DID find my A/C leak, compressor seal is leaking - so a new compressor
will be going on soon, that can't wait for long, too hot here

Was it a really scratchy sound? I had a horrible noise at idle, worse in gear at idle, and gone at high idle. I tightened the turbo clamp a few turns, and it was there, but then went away. (maybe things vibrated themselves sealed again with the new tightnesS?) don't know, but my Harmonic Balancer has a wobble to it and i'm paranoid so I'm replacing that tomorrow.

when it first started it was then it got deeper
