O7 Dmax your thoughts

I didnt think the dmax had the glow plug swelling issue. Mine are still original at 235k.

source unknown

They don't, but it is still a steel glow plug into an aluminum head so corrosion is always an issue. And some break off due to severe rust going all the way through the glow plug.

I bought a LBZ turbo from an guy just north of me that had 100,000 miles on it, it came out of his truck that he said a glowplug had broken off and destroyed the motor. Some things do happen and I think his was just one of those rare occurrences. Same with a glow plug welding itself in the hole.

06LLY's and early LBZ's had a recall for the glow plug controller keeping the plugs on for to long, and it would cause them to break off and go through the engine. Most all of them got reprogrammed under the recall, but a few have slipped through. And of course, sometimes crap happens.

I was going to remove both tires and take a look at the brakes and R&R the glow plugs. My 2 ton floor jack sprung a leak, so I just grabbed the trusty milk crate sat on it pulled the liners and crawled in.

You won't enjoy replacing a fan belt either.
I found out why this one is so hard to change. It has an air shut off (ex oilfield), after sitting for a few weeks it wouldn't start. I must have bumped the switch. The device makes for little room around the tensioner area.

I pulled the pass side batt and thatta there glow plug was right there smiling at me in plain sight :D, i bet i can get at all four from above :agreed:,... no need to pull the liner on this side;)

Fan belt replacement looks to be a wee bit more complicated, can i loose that Amish buggy wheel fan guard ?, it looks like it ain't serving any other purpose than to be in the way!

Mine has been hanging on the shop wall for a couple of years with no temperature problem as a result

I live in Phoenix Az. and would never consider removing the Amish looking buggy wheel on mine. Bad enough you have a 10lbs. motor on a 5lbs doghouse and you can probably get away with it where you live. These trucks are DOGS during the summer in town on the freeway at 110*f after a couple hours driving with in town stop and go the being the worst.

The only thing I removed to replace the serpentine belt was the intake and manipulated the belt into place, of course a third arm would have been helpful

If I lived in the valley I'd leave mine on too. My son lived there for 7 years so I'm pretty familiar with the conditions. I wouldn't want to live there year round.

How in the blazes does one get to the 2 push pins holding the fan shroud halves together on the pass side without removing the air filter housing??.. special tool again??
What the F happened to the tried and proven bolts that used to be there?? ....jeez!

Push pin type same as the fender liners, had to remove the intake also. I also found when I did the R&R on the glow plugs I had to keep the wire from tightening up against the head. Lisle tensioner unloader tool is helpful for the belt replacement.

I'm used to my 82 and bolts and nuts, well not anymore on this truck. For me on this truck I'm about half tempted to drill a hole in every tool that comes near this truck so I can tie a string to it in case I drop it. They drop in some of most F-ed places. Had a nut driver slip out my hit the fan, bounced and landed between the shroud and radiator.

Air filter box pulls right up and out real easy. Remove the top, pull the element and pull the box straight up out of the rubber grommets. Spend a bunch of time reading and looking at pics and DIYs and most of the maint questions are in there somewhere as well as a bunch of pics of how things are put together.

Much easier to ask then to root trough the archives,..i usually can't find what i'am looking for anyway.:D

I wasn't about to dismantle half the truck for these 2 damn pins :nonod:
I fabbed a pull up tool out of a piece of thin wall angle iron, i cut one side back a bit and folded the other side over against and spot welded it to form a closed corner so it has some strength and then cut a slot with a zip disc in the corner to accept the pin head.,...took all of 5 min to make and another 3 sec to hook under the heads and pull the pins.;)
There gonna be 2 bolts in there come put together time.:agreed:

I cut a 1/4" flat washer so it was open on one side, welded a welding rod on top. Slip it on the button and pull up.

Wow! Great info! Never used goople search that way!

I do it all the time for other sites I don't want to join. Most forums make you join before you can search them, but with google I can search them without joining and find what I was looking for.
