No start when hot

I got a neighbor with a 02 dodge, he dropped it of on my yard to get it fixed.
I done some work on the older 12 valve 5.9's ,but not on the 24 valver yet.

Here is the problem
When cold, it fires up fine most times and never stalls,can run it all day but occasionally misses at idle,but once you shut or stall her down,no way it'll fire again. It does'nt even try,just cranks over.
Altough It'll fire up right away when given a sniff of ether.
IP worn or ?

Any suggestions?
 
Yup, my guess would be the LP is shot and the IP isn't too far behind.

To check the LP, just put a bucket under the fuel filter drain hose and crack the valve. Then, bump the starter and the pump will cycle for 20 seconds. You should get about 1/3rd of a gallon in that 20 seconds. If not, then the LP is probably dead.

Problem with that is if the LP is dead, it can take out the IP in as little as 8 to 10 miles. The VP44 is HYPER-sensitive to fuel pressure.
 
Scan it for codes. You can do it by turning the Key on on and off 3x. It's a little tricky to do and will probably take a few times to get the feel for it. Then you will get a flash in the odometer. If yo get code 1693 that means there are MORE codes. It's the ones after that that count. If you have a P0216=IP Death. It maybe the diaphram in the VP44. If you are going to use ether(which is never a good idea) unplug the grid heater(24v does not have glow plugs, it has a grid heater). The 24v start really good when everything is right so you have a problem for sure. You can crack the lines loose and see if you have fuel at the injectors but I would look for codes. Yes the LP fails from the vibration of the engine and where it's mounted plus it's not really big enough. Stock tune they "work" Anything more than stock upgrade to an Airdog or Fass. A must have on a 2nd gen 24v. If you have to pull the IP MAKE SURE the keyway is facing up on the IP shaft or it can fall into the timing case and then you are F-CKED. The "Lemon" and the f'in scumbags at Lee's Auto Ranch in ellington CT have made me learn much about the 2nd gen 24v.

The VP will most likey die in the near future. I would P Pump mine but it has too many accesories. I may sell it and buy an older higher mileage one with no cruise and a handshaker and p Pump it. The 24v(less 53 block) is a good eingine except for POS VP44.
 
If you're gonna spray it, it's not a good idea to use either.

WD40 works well and, surprisingly, silicone spray works fairly well also.

Neither will flash like ether will if it hits that grid heater.

I know ether is a no no with plugs or intake heater,but the neigbor must be a lucky duck cause he's been using it steady for the last week or two.

i thought the LP was not" flow on fail "type in these trucks,thats why i suspected the IP

Does the LP normally run with key on? Or is there an OPS involved here.?
What fuel press is normal on these engines?
Is there a test port somewhere ?

I got no manual for this tuck either.
 
might just be a weak pump. I helped my brother change his but I don't remember any test ports. Was kind of a pain to get to though.
 
Fuel pressure, on a stock lift pump should be 13 - 15 psi at idle and no lower than 7 psi under throttle (which is actually too low).

The VP44, like it's fuel pressure at a max of 20 psi and a minimum of 10 psi.

Most aftermarket pumps are set to 15 - 17 psi for VP powered trucks.

The stock LP is flow on fail. That is the problem They fail and you kepp driving till VP death. That's why a FP gauge is a must have on a 2nd gen 24v.
 
My friend has the same problem. We did change all ready the LP to Fass 95 allmost an year a go. But the problems whit starting started 6 month a go. We did checkt the pressures an he has the gauge in panel. Pressures are some around 20 psi in idle (if it starts). The LP does start after you crank the motor and rises the pressure. But when the engine is warm it`s all most inpossible to get the engine start. And there ain`t any codes. The next part that we will change is the VP44. Hope that the VP`s change will solve the problem. And here in Finland it`s not so easy to get part`s but whit help from KOJO we manage to get the VP44.
And little bit of the car history that after the Fass was added the injectors are bigger +50 hp, Bully Dog`s flasser +50 - 125 hp, 4" exhaust.
 
The LP works fine,seems to have enough flow by the look of the fuel stream.
The truck did'nt wanna start cold either,(was a toss up according to the neighbor anyway).
What is the VP you're yapping about?
 
We did drop the pressure to 15 psi... Didn`t help, in ouer case. We manage to get one "VP44 Specialist" guy to talk. And he sayd that in side the VP is pressure reculator whit`s is leaking the pressure out of the VP. So that the VP doesn`t get needed pressure to work right. And in most cases change or repair the VP. And here the repair is more expencive (whit freight 1500€ to 1900€ ~2600$) than buying a new (New cost 1300€ ~1780$). And the nearest repair shop for VP is in German... :) Fine place to live in Finland. :)
