Newbie to Dmax need some fast advice

It's in NH Lacer. Long Haul. Supposedly it was his uncles who never drove it and recently passed away. I am working on getting the VIN from him. 8k miles is what he says it has so if it checks out I may just have to buy it. It's more than I was looking to spend but for that miles and it's exactly the truck I want so may have to bite the bullet. I will keep you guys posted. the only downside is it is too nice a truck to take in the woods. I would actaully have to be careful with it. My 2000 was already destroyed body wise when I got it so no tears boo ha'in through the woods. Can you tell from the VIN if it's LB7 or LLY ? I don't think the guy will know.

It's an LB7...

I like the LB7...just don't like the injectors...and the 01's had head gasket issues...

but as far as the injectors go...they will warrant them for 7 years from the in service date or 200k miles(whichever comes first)

so you may still have up to 2 years warranty left...I'd say you are good to go...some say an LBZ turbo mouth piece and a CAI is a good fix for those...

some lly's had overheating issues towing heavy on steep grades/ in hot climates...

8th digit of the Vin tells it all...

1= LB7
2= LLY
3= LBZ
4= LMM(?) I think...

LBZ's have a "D" as the 8th digit, not a 3 and LMM's are different too but I have no idea what those used. The 1 and the 2 were only for the first and second gens.

OK good to know. Does the vin tell which tranny is in it ? 5 or 6spd ?

Its a 5 speed. 6 speeds didnt come out until 06. Its the first generation engine rated at 300/520.

I gotta call my bank tommorow too to see if I can get a loan for it. Shouldn't be problem. We just agreed to a pay cut at work so we got a one year guaranty of no layoffs so that put's a little confidence in me to buy it. I love my Tahoe because it's unique but the truth is since I started selling oil again on the side I just don't have time to work on the stuff and the miles are high on both my rides.I'm been working 14 hrs a day between both jobs and spending Sundays doing PM on my trucks.

And thats confusing but its for the 06 model year which were LLY/LBZ's depending on when they were produced.

8k miles sounds too good to be true. I'd have to jump on that...

So knowing all this the truck still sounds like a decent deal ? I really love standard cabs and they are almost as rare as my Tahoe.

I was just guessing...bad idea ...I know...

I could swear my buddy has a late 05 lly with a 6 speed... either that or he didn't get it and didn't tell me...I remember building the truck for his order...but the 6 speed transmission option wasn't going to be available until after Jan 05' so he waited...did GM just shelve it until the release of the LBZ?

Maybe I should have followed up with him...see what happens when you lose touch with someone...

An 05 with a factory 6 speed is a myth. They didnt exist. If he had an 05, he had a second generation LLY rated at 310/605 factory specs with a 5 speed. It probably wasnt available until after january 06. Any truck produced after january 2004, was effectively called a second generation or an 04.5, with the LLY. Any truck produced after january 2006, is a 3rd generation, LLY/LBZ, since the two motors are the same physically, just different tuning.

The 06 model year was the first to come out with the 6 speed, called the LLY but actually had nothing in common with the previous generation 04.5-05 LLY. Two totally different motors. Its basically an LBZ thats been detuned. And 6 months later, GM tuned it up and relabeled it an LBZ. With 50 more h.p. and 40 more tq, It was a marketing gimmick to have the ace to pull out on Dodge and Ford, which they did and worked.

I'm trying to figure this out... I can't recall the timing but I do remember his truck having that dumb slide up sunroof... I remember telling him if he waited he could get the real sunroof and the 6 speed...what year did GM start putting in a real sunroof? possibly the 06 lly you spoke of?

now I'm gonna have to go find the answers...and probably call the guy...It's hell when you get old and can't remember shit...
