Need help getting my 6.5 work truck going

Ok I just pulled some fuel out and it's got a lot of water is there anything else I should do other than drain the tank and use a fuel additive with fresh good clean fuel? Do u think this could b causing my problem?

GM makes a fuel system cleaner for just such issues. You run it from a 5 gal bucket and idle the engine till it is gone. You will need to drop the tank to get the water out.

Water will destroy the IP and injectors. I suggest a CAT water separator setup as the GM fuel filters don't do the job for water period. There are other brands as well. I have one with the CAT setup and one without. The one without burned up the IP and injectors when I got hit with bad fuel and the other is still running fine.

When you drop the tank get rid of the sock. Also you should replace the fuel level sensor with one from leroy diesel. Factory ones don't like water...

Sorry if I missed something, but Im to lazy to reread the thread.
I would try a "BRAND NEW PMD".
On water issue: to see if it will make a difference you can temp run a 5gal can of clean fuel directly to IP. Use a temp LP and a small filter (one of those plastic/glass types will do for the short time you'll need it).

I've gotten by just running 3/4 gallon out the drain T before. I use a gallon pickle jar. Maybe do that til you run out of water in the fuel. Beats dropping the tank. After you run out of water, I would change the fuel filter again.

Actually running 3/4 gallon out the drain petck with the lift pump jumpered is one of the first things I always do for diagnostics. That, check the oil, check the coolant, load test the batteries and check battery connections. When you are running fuel out the drain, note the flow rate. After a while you will get a feel for it. If it starts getting slow for no apparent reason, unhook the out end of the lift pump, put a hose on it and run to a container. Note the flow. If the flow is still slow, pull the lift pump and pump from container to container. If the floe picks up speed you probably have a bad line or a plugged tank sock.

When buying an OEM style lift pump, Get an AC Delco or GM for a 1993. They are supposed to have higher flow rate.

You can save a lot of time just doing those simple things.

The fuel pickup is 1/2" or so off the bottom of the tank. You have got to empty the water out of the tank somehow.

So from your experience would u think its about time for a ip and injectors now?

Injectors yes. IP, I would wait for further diagnosis.

You might also want to take a good look at your engine oil cooler lines and your harmonic balancer. I prefer the Fluidamper if the balancer needs to be replaced

Ok finally got a chance to work on the ole 6.5 today and ran the truck off of a 5 gal can of diesel and she fired rite up and ran better than it ever has since ive owned the truck. Lift pump is weak but still working so im gonna order a walbro from leroy in the next few days. The sending unit is wasted and I was planning on making my own with -6 fittings and braided stainless lines feed and return because I can get the fittings and braided line for free. My question is if anyone has used a sump style pick up in their truck or if that would b a bad idea for some reason I haven't thought of. Also getting the remote spin on filter from leroy so I can get rid of the tank sock. thanks to all for the help along the way. Is -6 big enough for the feed? Or should I use -8?

-6 is big enough. The only neg I can think of with sump is ground clearence. For me it would not be a consern.

Yes, while supplies last. $145.
I make them as ordered and leave it to the customer to cut the mast to its final length.

Ok sorry it took so long but I'm a boilermaker and I travel for work so I'm not home very often. But I just replaced the fuel tank and sending unit and the fuel lines up to the lift pump. Truck starts runs and drives great until it gets to about 160 degrees and than it sets the ses light with code p0251 and starts acting like it's running out of fuel under acceleration but idles ok. After it cools down over night the ses light goes away and the whole process starts over again. Dose this sound like the optical sensor or more like a pmd because if it was the optical sensor I'd think the ses light would always be on and would always run like shit. I've got a pmd cooler from Leroy and mounted it behind the bumper in the breeze. I've felt the pmd when it starts to act up and it's as cool as can be. Also I have a pretty bad cross pipe leak if that could be adding to the problem. I have a new one but don't wanna waste my time on it if I can't get her to run rite anyways. And the truck has red fuel in it rite now because I left my truck at my dads house last week and he fueled it up with fuel from work if that could be part of my problem also. Grounds are clean and batts good

I'm sorry 185 degrees not 160 like I said earlier. Could it be a temp sensor throwing everything off because last week the temp needle was bouncing around like nobody's business

The only thing with PMD issue is to use a KNOWN WORKING PMD to see if problem goes away.

That code signifies that IP is going bad but we need to do diagnosis.

How is the pressure from the LP, that can cause havoc.
Also make sure the fuel filter are clean, if in doubt change it anyway.

In the mean time, try to overdose on diesel fuel additive and see if that solves your problem.

7 lbs at idle and drops to 6 at wot in neutral. The thing is that it's like clock work when it hits 185 degrees it starts to run bad. If I let it cool down under 185 it'll run great till I hit 185 again. In the drive today once the ses light came on I punched the throttle and it revved out like it should then I held it at 2k and then punched it and it started to break up and act like a gasser running out of fuel over 3k

try unplugging the optical sensor. It will take quite a bit of cranking before it fires up. See if that makes any difference.
