Motor from Ted's Trucks not happy at 1st, VERY HAPPY with GREAT after sale care

The way I look at it, even if the cylinders need some work, the block, heads and crank (since my understanding is that the optimizer cranks are stronger than the GM cranks) are worth much, much more alone than we paid for these engines. I paid 2027 to my work. To do my 599 long block the right way, I'll be looking at at least 2500.

I have 0 complaints about anyone at Ted's. We have no idea how many of these engines they sell. I certainly don't hold 1 questionable engine against them, ESPECIALLY after they have done the very best they can to take care of VegTech. They did better than refund his money. They refunded his money and told him to keep the motor. GW is right, they lost money on this deal. The fact that they were not only willing to do this, but did it before, apparently, VegTech even actually complained. Like I said, that's first class and shows a lot of integrity.

I think GW has joined the unobjective consumer list. The only thing at question is if you are getting waht was promised in the sale. So stop thinking about how cheap it is, I can buy an "untested" Optimzer in a metal crate worth $300 for $150 like anyone else that finds a Government auction that people arent bidding on. Having a KNOWN good used one, shipped to your door is worth quite a premium in time savings. There is no doubt its a good value for KNOWN quality.

I am not saying anyone was dishonest, just be objective about this. The advertisement makes it a point of how you KNOW you are getting a quality engine. So can you get a good take out, only removed for a repower (perhaps a P400 going in the HMMWV), sold to Ted's Trucks, run on a stand, shrink wrapped, and less than a week later find dry rusty cylinders with soot caked scuffed cylinder walls? There are several people that chimed in to say that should never happen. Is it not possible? How long does it take to develop rust like that? How long do these sit exposed to elements? Will rust stay on top of a piston after running it a few minutes? No one is giving an actual reasonable explanation.

Is the higher RPM cranking compression check masking something that could ultimately be a cold starting issue on a civilian truck? Who knows?

Do you know how much it costs to bore out the cylinders, get new pistons, deck the heads, new valves? It will cost more to rebuild than he paid for it. The free engine is not some awesome deal. Its nice that he doenst have the hassle to ship back and a good amount of extra good parts, but rebuilding it to drop in will cost as much to buy another engine from Ted's, which Ted understands.

I think that this was an exception, but it would be nice if Ted backed his engine with a stated condition Guarantee at least to back the statements of how we know we are getting good quality. It could be that there is no mileage warranty, but lets not be so surprised they covered a defective condition that was clearly not KNOWN qualty as advertised. Thats good business and I applaud them for sticking behind their advertising. So stating on their site that it has a condition gaurantee as they are proving with their cusomter service, it would only be better for business.

I've been following this thread and trying to stay out of it, but I just can't keep quiet any longer.

You guys are gonna drive the guy away with this nit picking and insistence on getting more than what you pay for.

You're buying a used engine. You're taking a chanc to save some bucks. Sometimes you get burned doing that.

He sold an optimizer for what, 1200 bucks? You can't even buy a rebuildable block for that price around here.

Then the guy sends out another engine on his own dime. Doesn't take a genius to realize this guy is not making any profit at this point and may actually be in the negative column.

The guy sold a used block with no guarantees, sent another one when some minor defects (from looking at the pics) where found in the first, all while most likely loosing money.

Give the guy a break, even if another engine shows up in any running state, he exercised due diligence and has shown he's more honest than most out there.

It's a used engine. Everyone knows that right up front. You guys are going on like it a fresh rebuild or a new unit. He already does more than any wreaking yard would to check the engine. Give the guy a break.

I just can't stand whatching what seems like a very ethical seller getting beat up over nothing.

This isnt actually accurate. Selling on ebay or through paypal or on any credit card gives you buyer protection. His is listed in excellent condition, sorry but this one wasnt, so Ted would be paying to take it back regardless. Written guarantee or not, ebay and creditors give you that protection. Ted's customer service is absolutely outstanding to not have to deal with that claim crap. Good for them.

I wasn't going to comment, now I think I'll chime in. Vegtech and I are friends, he's done a lot of the work on my Suburban, good guy and excellent mechanic. A message from Subclatter just got deleted, I'm confused, I think Subclatter and Robzombie are the same poster, but I'm not sure. If not, my apologies.

I was in on the buy from Ted's. Veg works crazy hours so I did the ordering and first follow up with Margaret, then with Ricky. The issue of unloading a damaged pallet happened because it got unloaded at Veg's workplace and someone else unloaded and signed for it. Nothing we could do about that after the fact. Neither of us could get to calling Ted's until mid day the next day. When I called, Rob had already called and emailed the pictures and told Margaret that a web site had some posting about the issue. Rob, thanks for looking out for a fellow poster, the concern is appreciated, but I don't know what you wanted Veg to do, give you a big, huge thanks? Now you posted a real angry message just because he told you to chill, and it got deleted. Nothing he said showed a lack of appreciation, then you made your big post with how you weren't being thanked, not sure where that came from. Anyway, seriously, thanks for the concern, and we'd do the same for you. Why don't you relax a bit, there's a bunch of great people here, and let's get back to the subject of his engine project.

Ted's couldn't have been more responsive. Margaret is great to speak with. Ricky spoke to both Veg and me, a great guy who was really concerned about the problem. You couldn't ask for a more stand-up vendor.

Buddy's question about what to expect is valid. I'd say if I end up buying an engine from them I'll probably ask if they'll pull the heads, even if they charge me for the labor. Should they on every engine? I don't know, they're the ones that sell dozens of these every month, I'll leave that decision up to them.

Yes, they are one and the same, one name is his home computer the other is his laptop. I was confused and asked.

And what is that supposed to mean.

I hide from no one and stand by what I say.

What are you insinuating?

I will explain why I have two names but only one attitude.

I was in Pa for christmas and got a new lap top and wanted to see what posts were being put up by all my wonderful friends here. Including you GW LOL

And since I didn't know my password [because I never use it] I leave the forum up on my pc and it also remembers that info so I don't have to.

So GW what's your intent. HUH

Back on topic

Can we get back on topic here please? This is a good thread. The seller is making good on his motor and is shipping a new motor out. You can't really ask for more than that. Mistakes are made sometimes. The seller is backing up his motor.

Gentlemen, I hate closing threads more than almost anything - it makes me feel like ... like... well, you know who.

But this one is getting close.

Everybody, please step back a bit; we have a great forum here mostly because we don't engage in sheite like this, because we give each other the benefit of the doubt, and because we understand how easy it is to be misunderstood when all we have to go on is the written word (no body language, facial expressions, tonal or vocal inflections, etc).

So everybody check your attitudes at the door, and let's try this again:

Facts thus far:

- Engine ordered from Ted was less-than-excellent
- everybody here got excited
- Everybody at Teds agreed with the assessment and offered to make good on it
- Everybody here is happy and thinks Ted's is a stand-up place.

Right in there somewhere, we decided to play a rousing game of 'I'm always right and get to have the last word'

Now that we're over that, let's move on, please.

Rob, look for a PM from me.

Jim

I'm playin with ya GW so don't post all nuclear.

I'm a word guy not a:WTF::thumbsup::hihi::mad2::mad2: whatever these things are called kinda guy.

I'm sorry if you don't get my humor, or that I'm barely comp. literate.

If I do piss someone off PM me and I'll do my best to rectify the sitchy ation

I'd give em a shot. Like was said where can you get a decent used motor for that price. As long as he took care of the DOA, he did better than any junkyard. I for one would never buy an engine under these circumstances(not being able to hear it run first) and assume it was ready to "drop in". You can bet if I ever need a motor and bought from Ted's or someone like him, I would still pull the heads if for no other reason, these engines are prone to HG failures and it's a tit job to do while sitting on a stand.

Good thread minus the bickering.... <snip>

If I had the funds, I'd drop it on one from Ted's right now... been looking for while for a switch-out on the "Beast" sitting in my driveway.

As for the "bickering," you all have an idea now, albeit, at a much lesser degree, how they do things in Washington, DC...(or don't get things done).
