Missy and DaHoooley, the SAGA continues

A 6.5 factory crank will ring like a BELL.

The Old ring its steel, thud its cast is not always an indicator.

The Optimizer cranks are of better material than the original GM shafts.

My crank is from the GoodWrench engine that came in the truck.

It rings good, has no mag indications but I am going to use a SCAT steel crank just because I want to sleep well at night.

Just too much work to keep redoing this damned thing.

I am tired of wrenching on that beast, I want to go out and get in it and drive it, not crawl under the hood with tools.

With the availability of top notch parts, it makes zero sense now to rehash this with questionable stuff.

Back a few years, all you could get was more GM junk and the great possibility of another failure was always present.

My feeling is that with a KNOWN good piece of iron to work with, why not use a good crank and heads just to be sure.

The last debacle cost me a lot of $$$ and got me nowhere.

The 94 Burb, luckily had a solid 599 Block and the clearwater heads seemed to be fine.

Just can't afford to do this thing a 3rd time.

MGW - Are the Optimizer cranks still cast or did they wise up and use forged cranks? Do you know? I suppose I could just get off my arse and make some phone calls, too.

The specs call out a nodular iron crank (cast)

The P400 gets the forged steel unit.

The issue is not that the crank is Nolular iron, but that what the metalurgy was.

The Scat steel cranks are CAST but just out of far better materials.

here's a copy of the response I got from the Ebay seller .

We buy these crankshafts directly from Scat. ( They are boxed in Scat boxes, we unpacked one for the photo)

We have seen the others you are referring to and the quality is not comparable...........that is also why the Scat crank cost more.

Thanks for checking

I am not convinced.

I can buy at Jobber price and thats not even close to his EBay price.

He may have a real volume deal going buttttttttttttttttttt ?????????

Missy

Where are these Scat cranks made anyway?
Seems like everything has a china connection along the line somehow!
Its hard to believe any one in the US or Can can build a top of the line steel crank for $400 considdering what is involved.
That 6.5 aftermarket seems dominated by China.

Spoke with the outfit that has the scat crank on Ebay.

I also spoke with scat and they confirmed that the seller is a buyer from them.

Buys 25 cranks at a time.

SOOOOOOOO I bought that scat crank for DaHooooley.

Fellow I spoke with said that they dont ballance them, just toss them in and GOOOOOOOOOO

I think that ballancing is probably a great idea.

My cost from the local wholesaler is $440 and I would hyave to drive up to Portland top get it.

This one will be $372 to my door.

The castings are not chinese.

Scat has a great reputation for quality.

Anyway, the fellow says the box says SCAT on it.

Done deal

Props for AK.....The right product at the better price and shipped like Missy said, No MPG's to add on to the final cost.

Thanks for the leg work AK!

The Optimizers use a Nodular iron crank thats cast by Navistar I believe.
The P400 gets the forged steel crank.

Scat is a good aftermarket manufacture of performance cranks for a lot of different engines.

GEP/AMG use only materials that they either contract or make themselves.

China is not in this equation.

The GEP heads are ready to bolt on right from the box.

Bill Heath Swears by the Scat cranks, uses them in his race trucks.

If the Scat cranks can stand 5000 + RPM they can certainly handle the task of a daily driver.

Missy

I think the scat crank is a great idea but im about to start building and engine for one of my trucks and i dont think im going to be able to swing it. On the other hand i think that a crank that has seen 100K and has been mag'd with no cracks is trustable. i saw this even though i have had on snap on me! but i didnt have that one mag'd

I have no problem using a stock crank, even one with a zillion mls on it.
I got the org crank ground in the 89 already 15 yrs ago(ran out of oil).Look at the milage on it.
Personally i never seen a broke one yet.(knock wood)
But mebby i'm just lucky.
