Just Ordered An HX40WII

Wow, big difference. Pulls much harder now. That amount of smoke wasn't bad at all, not really much honestly.

What are your gauges reading now with the increased fuel? Assuming everything is in check, I think it's safe to bump the fuel further. But it looks like it runs great now and I'm sure your very happy with it, I would be.

Thanks, and I am much happier with it. I think I'm going to wait, and see what my fuel mileage is, before I go turning the fuel up more. :hihi: Also, I think part of the reason the smoke goes away so quickly, is because this turbo spools so quickly. I'm still shocked that this turbo spools as quick as my GM1. My EGT's were 1100 at the end of the WOT run yesterday. Thanks

Thanks, and me too!

I thought I'd post an update, as I've been running some tests trying to figure out why I hit a brick was at 3400 rpm.
1. First I checked my fuel pressure. 5-6 at idle. 1.5-2 at WOT. Makes no difference whether its at 2000 or 3500 rpm. While its not great, I doubt its causing my wall. The pressure gauge was courtesy of a fellow member! Thanks Paul!
2. It was recommended to me to check the drive pressure. I removed the EGT gauge temporarily, so I could install a pressure gauge. The gauge came off an old compressor, but is still accurate. (I tested it). I already had a role of 1/4 copper tubing that I used, so I only had to buy the fittings, and clear tubing. $11
As far as I can tell, my drive pressures are good. Most I saw was 32, and that was WOT, 22 boost, and 3500 rpm. Most of the time, its closer to 1:1. Highest seen was almost 1.5:1. See Video Below
3. Ive come to the conclusion that governor is killing me. I've talked with DieselPro, and I think there may be a way to take care of this myself. I'll talk more about this later.
As usual, I have to apologize for the poor quality of my video, and I don't know why I even try narrating these videos, as you can't hear a word that is said once the truck is moving. Junk Camera! :banghead:

After several PM's back, and forth with DieselPro, he gave me some good advice on how to modify the governor in my 5088 DB2 using some parts from my spare 4911.
I'm very happy to say my 3400 wall is GOOOOONE! Here is what was done. I installed the other shim from my 4911 IP, as well as using the large (primary) governor spring from the 4911, which is a much stiffer spring. I was very surprised at what an obvious difference there is between the 4911, and 5088 gov spring. I closely measured the portion my Gov assembly that needed to be the same length for the idle, and made sure to put it back exactly the same, so my idle is perfect. While I was in there, I decided to turn the fuel up a bit more, but I didn't even get 1/16 before the screw tightened, so I backed it off to where it was. This means my pump is maxed out, and can't give anymore fuel than it is now.
The truck now pulls solid to the shift points without falling off a cliff, although I have to say that it still feels stronger in the 2000's than it does in the 3000's. I ordered a new Delco EP158 lift pump since my pressure was a little low, and I'm curious to see if it has any affect on higher rpm power.
A special thanks to DieselPro for divulging information that I know most pump shops wouldn't have.
I'll try to get another video up soon. Thanks

A couple weeks ago I picked up an HX35 for scrap price ($50). It was off of a Ford Cummins 6BT (school bus). It was very rusty, but had very little shaft play, although it felt a little tight. Upon disassembly I found it hast the 56x83 compressor wheel, which is bigger than the 52x83 in my current turbo. While this is a true Holset, and my current is a CKO, I'm going to see if it will fit. I cleaned up the compressor housing, which still looked great after removing all the Ford Grey paint from it, with my bead blaster. I taped off all the surfaces I didn't want blasted, including the ID tag, then gave it a coat of cast aluminum paint. I also removed the v-band flange. Here are a few pics of the compressor, as well as a pic of the rest of the crusty turbo in a box. I'll let you know if it fits properly.

Matt

Alright, the wheel, and compressor or installed. Before dis assembly, I scribed the shaft, and wheel just in case. If you look at the pic below, you can see both the CKO, and Holset wheels have a section ground off for balancing that is almost exactly the same length. I lined the holset wheel up on the shaft with this in the same spot. I know this probably doesn't help at all, but it made me feel better. :hihi: The height of the blades on the holset wheel is slightly taller, as I think you can see in the pic. Everything fit perfectly, and operates just as it should. As a side note, I do have to say that casting technology of the CKO turbos appears to be better than the Holset, as my old compressor is much nicer looking than the Holset.
As far as noticeable improvements go, there is not much. With the wastegate set the same, I'm up 2 lbs of boost. I was seeing a max of 18, and I now have 20. Cruise boost is identical. The truck feels fantastic, but I don't really notice much seat of the pants difference. It is kind of nice to see the Holset name on my turbo, rather than turbone! :agreed::hihi:

Matt

I think it looks great and if the truck still 'feels fantastic' then that's an added bonus. Nothing like adding things for improvement purposes and seeing the benefits.

Thanks Jorge. I look forward to seeing you back in a 6.5 again. I've read some of your old threads on your truck, and you do nice work.

Thanks Paul, and I couldn't agree with you more. While I don't really feel a big improvement power wise, I am making 2 lbs more boost with the wastegate set the same as it was before, which means I can turn the boost controller down, and make the same amount of boost as I was before, but with less drive pressure. So, I'm happy with the swap. :)

Great score on the used Holset. Looks real good!
Thanks, I appreciate it. Once I finish my intercooler, the next thing on my performance list is a Bull Moose IP like you have, although I don't think I would ever get the MPG's that you do, as I have a hard time keeping my foot out of it. :hihi: I'm 40 now, and I have settled down alot over the years, but there is just something about driving this truck with all of its new found power, that makes me act like a 20 year old kid again.:rolleyes5:

I turn 40 next year- does that mean we are over the hill or just getting started?:hihi: I love the power of these ol trucks as well- it can be surprising how good a 6.5 can feel with a few solid mods.

I attribute the mileage partially to the transmission. I never drove an automatic like I drove T, if you drive it hard and shift quick it is rather violent, ie it will throw you back in the seat, it is jerky, you can feel things flexing, you can hear the driveshaft bang around, etc. Without the torque converter to soak up the torque of the diesel it tends to enjoy being driven like a big truck. Try shifting an Eaton 10 spd quickly when your bobtailing and you get the idea. When you almost pause between the gears and let the torque carry you it is very smooth and pleasant. I have even double clutched it a few times just to find what works best for comfort, acceleration, truck longevity, and smoothness. I like to roll into the throttle and 3rd and 4th are your best gears for acceleration. I will shift from 2nd to 3rd and then wind out 3rd and 4th out. 1st and 2nd are so short that you hit 2500 or even 3000 before you can blink it seems. And for you guys that think the clutch is shot- nope. When I shift an 2"-3" is all that is needed for pedal travel. Any more and you are too deep in the clutch. As for torque she has plenty- the other day I was in a gravel parking lot and thought I was in reverse when I was in 4th- she started pulling forward when I let out the clutch on a slight hill, not a trace of stumble or gearbox rattle. She did not stall either!

Anyway sorry to hijack the thread, I glad you are enjoying your truck and having a blast! Keep up the good work!

Matt

One of the cleanest 6.5's I have seen.

Probably not a bad idea Paul! Can you say wheel hop! I don't do burn outs for that reason.:D

Matt

X2 on that Paul. You will love your truck even more after you firm up your rear end and put all those new found ponies on the ground. I just rand a boosted 0-60 in about 8 seconds. non boosted about 10.

Very impressed with your truck.

WOW! That is one Hauling Hunk of 6.5 you have there SS! Getting a 6.5 moving like that is something to be proud of, and I'm envious. :) Very, very nice.

Thank you. Not trying to hijack your thread. Your truck runs and hard. Seeing that steering wheel brings back some memories of growing up in my dad's 92 pickup. Anyway, I bet you notice a huge difference once you tie down your rear end. Your truck sounds great and runs hard. Im way too scared to push the boost numbers you are though. if you could get more fuel the sky's the limit so long as your block holds together. I dont like anything over 20 on my motor without head studs. Not to mention the 200k + miles
