Huge problems :( Engine maybe

Not me, I'd rather do all the work around 1500rpm instead. Long live the diesel!

I agree 100% Matt... Just saying - Apples to Oranges.
The 500 is probably THE BEST block that GM ever came up with. Too bad it wasn't used in a Diesel application - Or was it? Or could it be?????

Update. Just finished re-assembly. She Fired up!

Gonna finish up early tomorrow morning, oil change and misc buttoning up, and test drive and we'll see where we are at.

Great news thus far. Learned alot today about my 6.5. Started at 9am finished 11 pm. 3 of us going at her at the end.

Boy did that oil cooler line swap look easy without the head/manifold in the way....

Wish I had more time on something like this.

Nice, Matt!

I really hope this all works out well for ya... and HEY, you found a great machine shop!

Keep us posted...

Jim

boy hope you didn't run it to long with coolant in the oil?....bearings wouldn't like it!!!!....

I thought he said he didn't have any coolant in the oil.

Man, what a great thread! I've been out of pocket and this is my first time back here for a couple of weeks.

That was just awesome! I read all ten pages.

Matt, I was cheering for ya after the first few replies :D

Glad it worked out good.

Good work everybody!

Smitty

Just checkin in to see how ya doing. Hopefully out plowing. I have a spare crossover pipe if you need one and i might have a usable ex manifold if you need it.

Also MAtt(hopefully this info is too late and your already together) but advance auto has ex manfold studs on the misc hardware rack. I bought mine from SS but after the fact realized I could have gotten them there cheaper. Good luck trying to get a new donut. Napa always gives me the wrong one. I get them from the stealer.

Im glad you got it going matt, Im still working on my jimmy. I got it back together except the throttle body, exhaust manifolds and a few other small things. I cant wait to get my jimmy done and out of my hair.

Are you going to do the other head some time in the spring or summer?

Assembled truck this morning, starting snowing lightly immediately.

Changed oil, loaded a/f warmed it up, let it run and it stalled around the corner.

Had my 3/4 wrecnch next to me cracked lines, one injector blew at my face in atomized puffs.

This mechanic 'friend' who has a language barrier between us insisted on screwing with the injectors after I left (had to, didnt' want to) the first day he looked at it.

AFTER i told him it wasn't the injectors and it was cyl 7 isolated problem.

I got a phonecall from my Bro-inlaw, he said he was out there taking injectors apart, said he blew with the airgun and nothing came through.

I said what the hell is this guy doing, tell him to check cyl 7 for compression, don't mess with injectors. I already ruled them out.

Anyhow Napa had 8 in stock, because I ordered them a week ago and never picked em up :)

Bought one at 80 bux, tossed it in (i'm a pro now :) and it ran much better and still a little smoke.

I think the smoke now is from the other injector he screwed up. It is raw diesle, lightly, under accel it turns black.

I will try to hunt down that cyl tomorrow and might have to buy another injector at least to rule that out.

Important guys to CLEAN RELAYS, GROUNDS, Fuses

my ecm fuse, and my fuel pump relay were not seating properly as the under hood fuse panel got abused a little during the work.

It was a nice test drive I then took the truck for. 7 Hours of city plowing :)

No sooner than i pulled up to my plow (still at the other garagees parking lot) did the City call for me to plow.

I hooked up the plow and now the plow didn't work! WTF, I suspected ice in ther (beeen there way too many times with this plow) Jacked it up and drive it back garage to heat up, It came too half way through and plow was working fine by time i got to the house.

I need to resolve that smokey issue now, which I'm thinking its the injector he screwed with, and take it from there.

Thanks again guys for all your help.

I have faith my 6.5 will be back to its normal self soon enough. With 100% of the credit to you guys.

I need to end this now, because last message was twice as long and twice as detailed and i accedently hit the back button on my mouse instead of submit reply.

Glad to hear you are up and running again. Feels good, eh?? :)

Good job, Matt!

Good to see you got 'er back together. Nothing worse than your faithful truck spitting blood.

Sincerely,

Rob :)

7 hrs of plowing eh? Kinda nice making some cash after spending some huh? That is great news Matt. Way to go! :smile5:

Sure does. All things aside, He removed and re-instaleld my head for $350 rather quickly. His hussle allowed me to plow today, and already paid that off and then some.

I am very greatful for him to take that on, even though I just vented to you guys about him trying something on my proven good injectors. Without him, I would still be waiting for my truck, and you know it would have been more than 350 labor.

Update,

Checked codes po 251. Only code.
"PCM has determined that a malfunction exists in the electrical circuit for injection pump fuel metering control "A"

Same code I had before, but had a different scanner was able to do a followup test which proved it false.
Think its still false?

cracked all inj lines, could'nt really for sure isolate the cylinder.

When the SES light comes on, is it possible that some time during 'limp mode' the computer shuts power to my lift pumps?

When truck runs/idles smooth I crack the fuel bleeder and fuel comes out like it should.

After a little running/driving truck starts to run like ass, and cracking the fuel manager bleeder makes a hiss sound (not sure if pressure or vacuum) and no fuel comes out. Engine Idles smooth for a second then dies.

Turning off truck then on, gives power back to the LP's, and once the fuel manager fills up again fuel comes out of the filter like it should, with the exception of excess white smoke. Then it runs good for a while.

Question, would a bad injector throw a po251 code?

Would bad comperssion in a cylinder throw it?

oh Matt - wear safety glasses or protective eyewear, OK? The stuff is under a lot of pressure!

When I crack my lines a little diesel dribbles out, defanately not even close to alot of pressure. Also I accedently popped a return line off while it was idling, and barely any fuel came out of teh inj nipple. But it did come out, the same as the others.

This sounds like your lift pump isnt working

It works, decent flow. Then gets shut off some how. I know the computer can turn it on, can it turn it off?

When I jump power to it (test connector by underhood fuse box) it flows and fills the filter and out the bleeder.

Did not have a problem before the head swap. Lift pump is for a93, AC Delco and not even 5 months old.

I hear it run at key startup, it pressurizes, and when i crack bleeder it comes out.

I did just have my fuel tank replaced, along with a new sending unit. Drove the truck for over a week and had no symptoms of problems what-so-ever including the day my head went south when I was on the highway w/plow using ALOT of fuel. No starvation whatsoever.

I know the truck is putting itself into a conservative mode. It limits pedal/fuel and shift points. I call it limp mode. When this happens, is it possible that the PCM shuts off power to the lift pump?

I know on obd2 LP is powered via OPS switch and PCM. The OPS was openly exposed during head swap (should have changed it out it was so exposed, but in rush) Could have gotten hit/disturbed perhaps. Doesn't explain fuel on start, and reason to stop.

Next time I can look at this will be Saturday, I should see if it has power at the pump, then crack the bleeder and see if it dies or has fuel.

I guess its possible LP is getting clogged/failed as I did just have tank/sending unit replaced, but it ran so perfectly for over a week without incedent.

Just a thought Matt but in the hurry a ground may have been forgotten or an electrical connector may not be making good contact. Leo
