I don't understand, you have one of the simplest least expensive Diesels to work on, what is about your truck that isn't working for you ?

If you can't get a mech injected 6.5 What makes you think a different engine, more elctronics to go wrong, or a custom install will make it better? Used trucks have issues, if you think its alot of work to fix your current problems then just wait until you try to drop a 5.9 in and get your guages and the electronics you do have to work.

It sounds like you have a good engine IDK why you would try to get rid of it so soon.

If you a strictly hp then get a gasser. A 6.5 will put out more torque than most gassers. A 12 valve conversion will still be limited $ wise and you wont get an extreme amount of extra HP when you compare money spent after the conversion to money that could have been spent on the 6.5.

Sounds like you bought the wrong truck. 6.5's are workhorses and economy getters not normally award winners.

i am a hp guy, the 6.5 i believe just doesnt have enough balls

Well before saying that you might want to learn the 6.5 before condemning it, shucks in another thread you didn't know difference between the electronic or mechanical IP or if we were asking which LP you had.

What is the purpose for all this high Hp you are seeking, race or tow, several of us have VERY Ballsy 6.5s that would surprise many of the owners of the "balls trucks" you think would smoke the 6.5 but can't in stock trim or even lightly modified ones.

You came to wrong part of the forum asking for help with your 6.5 then to just dismiss it as being weak without knowing your way around the 6.5, maybe you should get some "store bought" Hp since you can't build it apparently :)

I scared a 07+ 1/2 ton 5.3L today with mine  . At the first stop light i was still in Econ setting and he started evin it up right when the light turned green, I mashed on it, took him off the line but he caught me pretty quick. Next light I flipped to Performance, locked in 4x4, and made an attempt at a boosted launch  i wasn't near as easy to catch that time :D

A turned up DB2 can perform similar. My Z71 has nowhere near all of the performance mods done to it, there is more power to be had i think.

its gonna be more for racing but when i get my liscense back im going to be doing over the road hauls, moving trucks state to state. im not trying to insult the 6.5, its just i have had one problem after another. what i really want to do is build a engine so i know whats in that engine. first my trans starts bucking, then t stat goes out, then fuel like breaks, then radiator blows, then power steering pump starts leaking. i just keep on having one problem after another. why is it when one thing breaks it starts going down hill from there. went and got the book on my truck today, reading up on everything about the engine slowly learning

i believe that building a engine is the only way you can learn about your truck. i started out with sbc, and now i can do it blind folded.

Your truck has ~400,000 miles on it right? Mine has all those problems with 200-300K miles on them. Building a truck for racing AND towing multi purpose is a tall order for any truck. The 6.5 can be used to haul race cars all day long, new parts is a must for ANY hard working engine. We have all been there trust me.

if you own an old truck you have to expect to replace things. comes with the territory may seem like it never ends but if you buy a different old truck than you got the same scenario. at least you'll know what you got when your finished

Ease up on the shock treatment and welcome the new member... :agreed:

With a few easy to do modifications you can turn this brick that can't get out of it's own way to a really snappy truck. This is without spending dime one. Then you can spend a little and get more snap.

You can spend the cost of a good tune plus a little and get a bigger Turbo IF and only IF you are going to 'work' the truck.

The 1993 simple as sin engine need needs a little help in the following easy steps:

1) Remove the snorkel air restriction in the passenger side fender.
2) Remove the top of the injection pump cover and give the screw 1/4 turn.

If you spend money:
3) Replace the exhaust - Crossover, downpipe, straight through muffler, and go 4" all the way back.

At this point the 6.5 is fairly peppy for a 200HP engine in a 8600 LBS boat. You will feel the difference in an unloaded truck around town and get 10 MPH more pulling a trailer up a 10% grade.

4) Fuel lift pump - A better one keeps the top end power up and they don't fail as often.
5) A-Team turbo best for towing or working hard. It will also eliminate the choke feel your engine has over 2500 RPM.
6) You have gauges like EGT now and can bury the IP screw at 1/2 turn or more with the above turbo.

Before dumping $$ into your truck you want to know the engine condition with a blowby test.

Also the cooling system needs help by removing the engine oil cooler and cleaning the mat behind it out - removing the radiator and cleaning it out or have a shop rod it. Then look at a 9 blade fan and new fan clutch and possibly a HO water pump upgrade. Don't go over 210 on the gauge or you will crack the heads and or the block, scuff a piston, or otherwise quickly learn how to pull out a ruined 6.5. Cooling system being in top shape with upgrades can't be stressed enough.

Last but not least:
If you can afford it and need a truck that will deliver MPG and performance when loaded in hilly terrain - get something more modern. The IDI diesel engine suffers in MPG the harder you work it although it will still deliver more MPG than a modern gasser. After all 1993 is ~20 model years old.

When you buy a used truck, you're buying someone else's problems. Unfortunately, you may have got a truck load. T-Stat leaking and then the rad going was more than likely indicative of a larger problem. Now you've got to address it when you can't even drive anyway. When you're done putting humpty dumpty back together then you'll be just like the guy that posted, "i believe that building a engine is the only way you can learn about your truck. i started out with sbc, and now i can do it blind folded." No, wait, you are the guy that posted that.
What I'm trying to say is, Hang in there, you've got a good truck to start with foundation wise and it just needs some catching up. The folks on this page will get you there. So be patient with the truck, yourself and us as everyone helps get you on the road again....or not. Ultimately it is your call.

Dude it's a 93 even if it has a 95 engine in it that is a lot of time for an engine/trans/truck I expect you did not pay much for a truck of that vintage.

Beside that how many owners before U that didn't take care of it, so possibly a lot of poor care & feeding to be overcome with your truck.

While the 6.5 can be made to run fast & strong, when you say racer define that a little more street/strip, because the 6.5 in that role may not be best choice, the SBC would be better for the strip in a lighter truck.

300Hp is about what you'll max out on the 6.5 with "routine" mods, you can go extreme like Bill Heath did and is getting 150+ mph @ Bonneville but that is a purpose built truck with twin turbo and a DS4 electronic IP.

Need to better define the definition of racing, as Leroy linked in his thread the Cummins can be stuffed into the GM body and IMO would have been the better match up from first go round GM/Cummins vs Dodge/Cummins, but Cummins was old tech GM was 1st of the big 3 with the 6.5 to go with electronic fuel metering and only truck with a Diesel in a 1500 trying to mass market the light duty truck.

Need better clarification/definition with ultimate purpose for your truck, also a 3500 dually race truck ??? That is a tall order for any Diesel gears & weight issues limit that some as well, this a C3500 or a K3500 ?
