Going mechanical with a Moose Omega Marine IP

So you were probably running about a 15.5 at 92, a tick or two slower than my old '72 402 Big Block Monte Carlo with a TH400 and a 12 bolt 2.73 posi rear. Not blazingly fast out of the hole, but at 55 MPH on the 1-2 upshift it would scratch the rear tires and leave a 50' dual streak of rubber. 2-D came past the 1/4 mile at just under 105 MPH, no tire scratch. Yes, a lot of the Novas, Chevelles, Mustangs, Camaros, etc could take me in a 1/4 with 3.55, 3.73 or 4.11 gears, but by 3/8ths of a mile they ran out of steam and I walked away from them. I could hit 130 through a half mile. One night on US 77, I let it wind out on a nice two mile straight just to see what it could do, and had the needle buried straight down on the odometer and was battling valve float with the hydraulic cam trying to goose it a bit more out of it, when a Lancaster County Sheriff car passed me going the other way! Yup, saw the cherries come on, and I just shut it down and coasted over to the shoulder as he flipped around and caught up to where I had pulled over about 3/4 of a mile further down. Good news, it was Deputy Dave, our High School rep (I went to a rural high school outside of Lincoln). When I was younger before my parents moved to an acreage outside of Lincoln just before High School, Deputy Dave lived at the end of our block on the edge of Lincoln and his little brother, Rick, was a year ahead of me in school. We (Dave, Rick, my dad and I) used to race Deputy Dave's Micro Midget racer (think 1/4 scale open Sprint Car powered by a 500-600cc motorcyle engine) up and down the street when I was in Jr. High! Deputy Dave told me he clocked me at 141 in a 55 zone, told me he could take my license right there on the spot for all the violations he could write me up for, but instead gave me a good half-hour ass chewing there on the side of the road on how stupid it was to be driving that fast at night on a rural two-lane highway when a farmer could pull out of a field without his implement lights on and I'd never see him until it was too late, or a deer or animal on the r9ad would be it for me and that if I wanted to drive that damn fast, to at least do it on the Interstate where it was two wide lanes and controlled access, not somewhere where he may have to be the one to ring my parents doorbell and tell them I had just been in a bad wreck.
Yeah I'd say that time sounds about right. Hopefully with a few more tweaks I can crack into the 14s like I'm hoping.

That's a fun story and you're lucky who was in the cop car!!!

There's a nice stretch of interstate south of town that doesn't have much traffic or places for cops to hide. Back when I had my '04 GTO I used that stretch to make sure the 155mph speed limiter worked (it did). Man if I still had that car, and I dumped the money and effort into that like I did this Tahoe, I'd have a pretty quick car on my hands!! Although it would only be hauling ass, not a trailer...... Ah well, this is still a very rewarding project so far.

I miss my Monte Carlo. It was one bitchin' ride. With the right jetting in the Quadrajet and a good tune up, I could pull 19+MPG highway with the cruise set at 55 (remember the late 70s-early 80s?). Coming back from Ft. Lewis, WA summer of 81, me and a buddy drove from just over the OR-ID border at Payette, ID where we stopped to fuel up on I-80N (now I-84) at midnight, to Wamsutter, WY on I-80 where we stopped to fuel at 6am - 600 miles in 6 hours with one fuel stop in the middle. Had the cruise control set at 125, except for those fun twisty stretches on I-80N coming down through Utah to the I-80 junction. According to my tach, with the L/70-15R BF Goodrich T/As on the rear, I was turning right at 2700 rpm at 125 MPH, averaged 15.4 MPG for the six hours!

Yea, those Q-Jet's are about the best when working right but seem to warp more that other carbs because of improper torque applied when they first get rebuilt and the reason most rebuilds thereafter fail however tools are available to get them back to where they are supposed to be but pricey. Whenever I came across a warped Q-Jet I'd go with the Holley spread-bore as replacement.

I haven't had a chance to do any updates to the trans tuning, but I did have some time to do a run during lunch. I decided that if I did a run shifting the transmission manually it should give me an idea of how much (if any) the trans was holding me back. There is a setting in the controller that when you shift manually you can control the lockup at a given rpm. I have this set at 2300 or 2500 (I don't remember now), so I reasoned this should take the lockup out of the equation and the shift points would be evident. Also it's only 60* F ambient today so it would be really good air. I measured 6.86 0-60 and 10.58 for a 0-80 run on the stopwatch. The last one was 7.0 and 10.8respectively so I gained a little, but not quite as much as I would have thought. I may even be shifting it too high in this video because there was a lag from when I clicked the shifter up and when it actually shifted, so I may gain a little by shifting sooner.....but then again, I may not.... My BIG gains have already happened and now it's just fine tuning. It's getting there and there is a little to gain with fine tuning the trans, just how much is yet to be seen.

That is absolutely insane to see that speed go up like that in a truck.
Awesome!
Thanks Hink! It's a lot of fun to drive around now. To be honest, I'm probably pretty fortunate that my truck is relatively light weight (5700 lbs). I often wonder what it would be like to install an engine like this in a lighter vehicle.

Exactly what I've been thinking.

I've got a lot of extra parts laying around from my build that I've been adding to. Leroys timing set, scat crank (coming soon), etc. I want to put in my old 506 block (if it's any good) and put in a late 70s-early 80s single cab, short bed, two wheel drive, 1500. With a similar set up to what I have in Moby (ATT, water/meth, etc) for just a go-fast play toy.
With all the power I see in my 8200 lb pig, I'd REALLY like to see what it'd do with no restrictions relative to reliability and a lighter rig. FUN!

That sounds fun!! Unique Diesel's race truck was a setup like that. I don't know what his race weight was, but I saw one video where he actually ran a 12.90-something! I have a crack-free 6.2 block that I keep thinking would be fun to build and throw into something. I like the idea of a car even. I've seen a Vette and a Gen 4 Camaro, but those seem like torturous engine compartments to try to cram one into. Plus it would be hard to fit plumbing. Maybe a Caprice or Malibu??

El Camino?

Or El Camino....nice. Though I would worry about not enough weight in the rear for traction.

Now everyone knows you have been on the right path all along...awesome!

Thanks FT, though I would rather say "this is what I tried and here are the results". I don't know enough about the engine to try to propose what should work, but I'm happy to try some stuff and show how it worked for me!!

OK maybe a Chevelle then. I have one of those too! Have though for a long time about putting a 6.5 in it. Would not happen for me for a few years though. I have 2 other projects to do.

It definitely drops off when the rpm's rise, the speedo jumps right after a shift. Very nice.

Like an S-10 or new Blazer or a 55-57 Chevy? They make a Big Block install kit for them, the 6.5 is damn near the same size. My dream would be a 59 Coupe d'Ville with a hot diesel under the hood.
