Gm Head Gaskets

I think you need to give Cometic another try without the sealant, because the sealant will cause it to be more prone to leak, as the sealant isnt able to correctly mate to the surface of the gasket. Besides a dry gasket should be more effective. You should never theoretically need to use a gasket sealant, although we all do. If you order a custom +.15 gasket from Cometic then it will be 5 steel layers as well instead of 3 like the +.01, and cost closer to $140 each.

Torque them down twice, and use some thread sealant on the studs.

I have a set of factory head gaskets, what would you like? I can take a picture, or I can measure the fire ring width for you.

Here is a basic read for you on O-ringing engines and head gasket selection, the advice there is bang on.

A properly installed MLS head gasket will hold a TON of pressure.

If you have time ,I wouldn't mind looking at a picture of the GM gasket

I'm afraid to try Cometic again,I've also heard they don't work on the Cummins, but the common rail factory mls is fine.

Thank you, the fire ring looks like Felpro. I'm going to look into the military ones next,it would be nice to find a gasket that will accept an oringed block,if need be it will have to be custom made, but this is not cheap.

I'm afraid threir all kinda the same, but I want to see them all for myself, before I spend alot for custom gaskets.

I bought a military gasket set with 24 volt glow plugs on ebay,if the head gaskets are good I'll post a picture. How hot would these glow plugs get with 12 volts.

Got my military 6.5 gasket set today, they are Corteco brand the fire ring is pretty wide and they use a different material instead of grafoil, seems to be a little more solid if anybody wants pictures let me know. I think I'm going to use these and oring the block with .040 stainless wire.

I don't know, the fire ring is simular looking to the Victor Reinz, but the rest of the gasket material is different the fire rings are precrimped so I can't see if it has a wire inside. I also have the idea of getting Lubock Gasket to crimp an extra fire ring over top of the original one,but that might hold the head up and not seal water. They were listed as 6.5 overhaul kit for Humvee on ebay, I'll take some pictures, and measure the thickness, just looking at them they looked like .010 over. For $55 plus shipping I got every gasket for a 6.5 and 24 volt glow plugs.

it would be sweet if they where .010 over cause i neede them i just picked up a set of felpros they look better than what came in gasket kit i have. id be willing to try them out on a more stock motor than yours.

So far I'm not that impressed with any of them,I'm probably going to oring the block and use the Corteco gaskets.

Are you positively getting enough fuel in there to justify 60psi of boost? Are you sure youre not met at 30-40psi? Would be alot easier on the gaskets...

I thought of that, but I do have a decent amount of fuel, my turbo cleans up all the smoke ,but under the turbo it smokes like a pulling truck, and at idle,it hazes from the locked timing and low compression. I wonder if higher compression and lower boost wouldn't work better,it would at least be more driveable. The way I see it its not on the piston or head gasket thickness or between the valves that compression should be lowered since you want that air to be in the prechamber, I'm thinking about using stock pistons and modifying the precups to lower the compression, but not sure if its going to make a difference or not, guess there's only one way to find out.

On the pic of the VR gasket, where the fire ring and all moved towards the coolant port, did the Felpro gaskets with the re-inforced part move like that too, or just the VR gasket?

My gasket failures have involved the fire ring cracking on the re-inforced part and then pushing the gasket material into the cooling port. The fire ring remained in place.

The VR gaskets have a wider ring, which, is less clamping force per amount of fire ring. I was wondering if that's what you experienced, or if the Felpro did it too, indicating not enough clamping force for the gasket (head or block surface degredation).
