fuel economy, who has the best?

IIRC, read a report of a Burb (GMT400 body) that got 27 mpg highway (while using A/C) by switching the fan over to an electric from an Olds. If you are not going to tow, the Flex-A-Lite looks like a good solution.

I am going to call BS on that one. I am anal about tracking my MPG, I put electric fans on, got rid of the hydraulic unit, and gained zero, nada, zilch, butkiss mpg. This was n/a where a tailwind would affect my numbers. Yes, it ran smoother, quieter and revved up faster but don't expect mpg gain. I also did the same thing on my old Dodge B250, again, gained zilch.

Turbo, with a 6.5 IP-that instantly costs 2-3 mpg, and running alt fuels, average 15 mpg hwy/city/towing and massive hills.

N/A with a 6.2 pump, 18 city and hwy use with flat roads, 11 towing and trips with huge hills and a nail biting experience. N/A and a 6.5 IP, 16 mpg average and still 11 mpg towing/hills.

Well yesterday and today were the days I was to move. Road trip went smooth for the most part... aside from having the wife's bike fall off the carrier when a strap broke (not to worry, insurance should take care of that). And now I can report getting 17.5 average, all highway around 70 mph with maybe an hour per tank of idling. Also I had about 900 lbs. In the bed. My set up is in the sig. On the other hand the wife drove her new liberty crd right behind me and got 22 mph on the exact same. I am not happy with that. It should be much higher.

I got ya all beat: 7 MPG towing. :D I don't think it's possible to go lower while moving. (A gas engine is cheaper to operate towing even at it's 6 MPG vs. a stock 6.5.)

Then after improvements gained 3.4 MPG and like 25MPH towing. ATT, 4" exhaust, Walbro lift pump, snorkel removal.

Best at freeway speeds was the suburban with the ATT and spool valve getting ~16 MPG at high CA freeway speeds - an improvement over 14 MPG. Round town I get 10 MPG.

The 2003 Dodge 5.9 with the MT is 20 MPG mixed with a big hit to 16 MPG AC on. It goes over 20 MPG freeway. ~15 MPG towing.

Keep in mind LSD and ULSD is lower BTU diesel than the fuel of the past. So MPG you recall from the past is no longer possible on today's fuel. Biodiesel (B99) also reduces MPG by 10% due to less BTU.

Ha Ha! I may have you beat! :D 6.8 mpg hand calculated IIRC ! :O 50 mph head wind (slightly crosswind too) with a fertilizer tank trailer on back. 2000 or 2800 gallon, cant remember. Tis the wind that killed my ultra classy sheet metal flashing fenders on the White Trash Express....back to the drawing board on that one.. I had it in 4th with my foot to the floor, and it was holding 45 mph IIRC.

my best mpgs, all hand calculated, fuel filled to the brim, me jumping on the back bumper like an ape, and grabbing the truck by the nostrils and shaking it side to side to pop all air bubbles in the tank.

1999 C3500 Chassis cab: weighing 8500 lbs, all terrain tires, tanked up in Pocatello, ID, splashed 10 gal. in at Little America, WY to be safe, and tanked up again at Cheyenne, WY and it got 18.5 mpg.
Loaded, it would do low teens, for some reason no awesome loaded mpgs.

1995 C2500HD, best empty tank came on a run back from Indiana, no trailer, an NV4500 and a few missle crates (army surplus, poor mans crossover box) and a vented tailgate, it got 21.5
Best all time loaded: IIRC the truck and trailer are at a surprisingly dainty 10,xxx lbs, barely under 11K. 25 foot PJ straight tail 14K gooseneck. has about 3500-4000 lbs on board (a VT903 Cummins and some various misc. parts.) ECM-I fuse blew, so I was actually naturally aspirated across wyoming, so I had to soft pedal it to keep smoke in check: 14.5 mpg

1993 K2500HD, not awesome, 15.5 empty (only empty tank since I bought it, and in its defense, that was in California traffic)
Loaded, it will maintain 10-12 mpg. I cant believe it affects it that bad, but this is my only 4wd.

Maybe and not arguing, am presuming an enthusiast (like the rest of us) is just reporting actual observations.

Went back and found the original post (http://www.thedieselpageforums.com/tdpforum/showthread.php?t=37475) which looked like the 27 mpg observation was from a 6.2 N/A diesel conversion on a single (mostly) highway road-trip where the poster had just converted to electric fans. Two years later, the same individual reported 24 mpg for all / cumulative total of the driving to that date (http://www.thedieselpageforums.com/tdpforum/showthread.php?t=40921).

vssb off by a little? Hope not, hope he really got that.
Have a guy a work that always comments on how great his old 82 6.2. Swears he was close to 30 on some runs. Really great for him as he was making his own fuel way back when.

Doubt the VSSB was off as the poster commented that speedo was compared against GPS and the two were within 0.5 mph of each other; also, the odo agreed with ground track per GPS. Noticed another individual in those threads reported ~30 mpg freeway with a 6.2, 4 speed automatic, and 3.08 rear.

have an older buddy that has a 6.2L 700R4 2wd with tall geared rear that would get mid 20s. He was a hyper-miler though, drove easy and slow.

Just finished my move to Washington st. All highway for three tanks worth of diesel. Ran about 70 mph the whole time, and got right at 17.7 mpg. All the mods are in my signature. Not great economy but not the worst. I also had about 900 lbs in the bed and a motorcycle on a bike carrier in the hitch.

x2, with a turbo master, 4.10s, and a transfercase and front diff tagging along for the ride, 17.7 seems pretty darn good to me.

if you dont want to get too wild with mods, have you considered going back to the OEM vaccum setup for the GMx turbo? the vac system gets the best MPGs. It is a PITA at times, but I feel for the better MPGs, its worth it.

:mad:This darn thing is making me mad. I have tried many times to update my signature and from what I see it is correct but I have many people telling me I have turbo issues... I am not running a gmX turbo. To make matters worse the stock waste gate and vacuum pump met and untimely end between a tanker bar and a rock... so if my signature is still stating I am running a stock set up please let me know and I will pm the staff about how to get it corrected.

Sorry, I saw the "vaccum pump deleted" at the end, and overlooked the TE06H reference.

Do tell, what is a tanker bar? :)

In the civilian world it is commonly referred to as a spud bar, huge pry bar, or big f@$#**g pry bar. But in the USMC it is known as a tanker bar. It is about 5 ft. Long and weighs about 35-40 lbs.

I got real familiar with a tank bar. We would have "tire busting" party's all day long in the summer at 29 Palms. Those were days where we would change most every tire in the motor pool.
Tire spoons, sledge hammer and a tank bar. Such fun.
