Finally injection pump leak detected

Update…alright I purchased Leroy Diesel swollen glow plug removal tool and it worked flawlessly, I wasted some time trying other methods and no way would any other suggestion would have worked..and yes they were 11G …so I finally got fuel to all the injectors ( almost gave up until I reread some feedback and someone mentioned it would take a while) but then started leaking fuel in the valley and it seemed to be coming from the same spot as before…the key shaped seal that has the shape of a key…so have it apart again and noticed where the access to that seal is 2 screws hold it down and one of the holes had an obstruction and it looked like a tab on the end of a Heli-coil and it was so I removed it….thinking maybe it was keeping from setting completely…so we have been lucky with nice weather I’m going to put it back together tomorrow…but I have a question should I chance the Heli coil tab was causing it to not seat completely, or could I use a sealant like hylomar or permatex orange with the key shaped seal as extra security or is that not advised? Thanks panran

Post some pics of the heli-coil and where it went. you might be able to get the heli-coil back in if it's not pulled out at the end, or you are gonna have to get a replacement one and an install kit so you can go back with the bolt that holds the cover. most of those when installed need thread locker so they don't come back out. once dry then the bolt can be installed.

@Rockabillyrat would be our resident expert on an IP with a side cover that's been heli-coiled on the housing.

I’ll get a picture in the morning…I was able to finally get the tab or tang out of the screw hole so the Heli coil stayed in .. I tried picking it out and finally took a thin straight blade screw driver and smacked it screw driver and it came loose, that’s when I seen it was a heli coil…so I was hoping that was the cause of my leak stopping the screw from fully seating…so I can put it back together and hope it stops leaking or should I try to add a sealant with the seal…I’m thinking sealant is not a good idea and I should just put it back together and see…getting experience at knowing this engine so as long as the weather stays mild…it looks like the IP was rebuilt before, it is tagged, and I am guilty of leaving the tang on heli coils before,,,just hoping it kept the screw from fully seating…I’ll put it back together in the morning

is the seal rubber or a paper gasket? I would not use any RTV but you might get away with a thin layer of the non-hardening permatex #2 or some of that old indian head shelack stuff that is good for fuel. I have used the #2 on the top cover of an IP before due to it leaking.

Let other s chime in on the use of a sealant first though. also make sure the surface is flat with no gouges or dings around the edges. if the edge was ever dinged or dropped where it made a mark, that too can be causing your leaking issue. test your bolts without the cover to make sure they don't bottom out before they would tighten up on the cover too.

Okay I went out and took pics …cuz I’m sure people are wondering what the heck is he talking about…I’m sure it’s a one in 300,000,000 million chance this would happen (I better play mega millions) …I will post pics but don’t know what order they will download, pic 1 should show two mating parts with key shaped seal, pic two the screw hole, pic three the obstruction in the bottom of the screw hole (looks like the tang of a heli coil to me …anyway I’ll try putting it back together tomorrow….. I have a feeling this could be it but wonder if the previous owner had problems because it never completely sealed

When posting pics use the full image button after tapping the insert image button on the picture.

That tang does indeed look like it's from a heli-coil. check the threads and make sure the bolts thread in nicely and go in far enough to tighten down on the cover.

as for sealant, you can apply a small amount on the o-ring, use the non-hardening permatex #2, not silicone and you should be good.

I’ll try that…celebrated with a little too much beer last night, still waking up…I probably won’t know the result until it’s on and pressurized…Thanks for helping
I'm jealous. No beer for me for many years.

I can still drink a little scotch. But beer makes me afib. Might be time to try beer again someday. I have not even tried it in years. Other than a couple sips of my wife's.

Yeah liquor makes me blackout after 2 or 3 …but beer makes me a jolly good fellow and in heaven there is no beer….my wife has afib and stopped drinking and weed…Merry Christmas
