Conventional or even synthetics made from processed dino oil (group III) use modifiers to make multiweight, but true synthetic, like Mobil1 (and Amsoil are only ones I think) are pure base stock that just happen to perform viscosity wise like multiweights with varying temperature. So the group IV PAO synthetics do not have viscosity modifiers, just the additives for cleaning.
I use the Rotella T5 synthetic blend 10W-30 right now. Have not noticed any more blowby or anything negative, like I did when I tried the synthetic 5W-40. If towing and getting the engine hot in the summer I would stick with the 15W-40 though. If in freezing places I would use 5W-40 in cold months. If mainly just daily driving or not much towing then the Rotella 10W-30 is some good stuff.
Using the 2 quart filter I do have to use 2 gallons to get it full, and I run extended drains to like 6000 miles and it still comes out alright, I will be doing UOA on this 10W-30 soon, first time using it.
