extra large oil filter installed.....

Conventional or even synthetics made from processed dino oil (group III) use modifiers to make multiweight, but true synthetic, like Mobil1 (and Amsoil are only ones I think) are pure base stock that just happen to perform viscosity wise like multiweights with varying temperature. So the group IV PAO synthetics do not have viscosity modifiers, just the additives for cleaning.

I use the Rotella T5 synthetic blend 10W-30 right now. Have not noticed any more blowby or anything negative, like I did when I tried the synthetic 5W-40. If towing and getting the engine hot in the summer I would stick with the 15W-40 though. If in freezing places I would use 5W-40 in cold months. If mainly just daily driving or not much towing then the Rotella 10W-30 is some good stuff.

Using the 2 quart filter I do have to use 2 gallons to get it full, and I run extended drains to like 6000 miles and it still comes out alright, I will be doing UOA on this 10W-30 soon, first time using it.

and also vented CDR to the ground. will put a catch can in case it wants to drip but hoping it doesn't.
interchange #'s for the filter, Purolator L40084, WIX 51794, NapaGold 1794, Fram PH-373, STP S373. holds 2 quarts.
STP seems to be a Champion made filter. from what i've read, a good filter.
also, the STP filter i used was $7.00 from The Zone.

Hey Plowboyy just left Wally World and Delo 15-40 is vheaper than Rotella. Is this usually the case or did I stumble on a deal. Didnt get anything but have to go back tomoro anyway. Delo is $11 per gallon and Rotella is $13

orrum, Delo 400, Rotella T, and Mobil Delva 1300 super (Delo and Mobil Delvac make lower grade stuff with different numbers, make sure and get the stuff with matching labels) are all good oils, but a few truckers I talk to have consistently higher oil PSI (usually only 5lbs or so, small but noticeable) and cleaner oil with delvac 1300 super (they are local grain haulers) so I run M.D. 1300 super with a Wix filter, and havent locked one up yet! :)

Thanks GM Guy thats great info cause I feel I could use more oil pressure! I TELL U I LOVE THIS FORUM!!!! U GUYS ARE SUCH A GREAT RESOURCE AND VERY HELPFUL!!!!

Whew its 111 degrees in the shade here.

Deejaa just got my STP filter, heck its Richard Petty Blue I had to get it!

GM Guy Wally World has Mobil Delvac super 1300 15-40 for $12.59 so I got 3 gal, two for the oil change and the rest in case she wants a lil every now and then!

Cant wait to change oil and see how much it holds and what my oil pressure will be! Hey I am easy to entertain...... gonna get greasy soon, gotta get a square fuel filter and grease gun first.

I hope Doc and Great Whit see this....I made paragraphs! Becoming digital I am.

It's appreciated orrum.

The oil needed is about 1 1/2 gal. for a change.

Going to spend 2 weeks in Ca......

i will be in Canada for a couple of weeks, leaving tomorrow, Sun, getting back on the following Sat. all my time will be in SK for camping, visiting friends/family of my wife. 2 days when we land will be in N Battleford Prov. Park to camp for 2 days. will go to Bright Sand Lake to camp from there for 4 days and then Lashburn for 2 days for more camping. will go to her hometown of Coleville for 2 days to visit and will try to get to K-Rock for some poutine fries and bowling. going to Regina for 3 days to visit after that and will make it to Moosejaw while there. hope to have some 40* nights with some good friends around the campfire, enjoy a Canadian brew and do some boating. looks like it's close to 60* right now, highs mid 70's. don't know if i will have internet access while there but will try to check in when i can just in case someone is close to me and wants to get together.

flying. in minn/st paul right now. wife has a data plan on her phone only so my posting will be limited due to the cost. should land at 1 pm in Stoon, then go straight to N Battleford for a few days.
we have drove it 2 tmes before, both before kids, but now there are 2 girls and its 36 hour plus pit stops so that wasnt even an option.

I use AMSoil 15w40 in my 95 1500 with dual by-pass and it takes 2.25 gallons to the full line and I always over fill by 1qt so 2.5 jug is perfect. Uses 1qt every ~5K miles and I change it every 15,000-20,000.

My 93 runs 15w40 Rotella T and I fill it the same as my 1500 (7qts + 1qt to make it and even 2gal). Burns a qt every 500 miles/every fill up (YES 500 MILES ) I will be adding a provent until the ol gal lets go and I need a new long block.

Just noticed a possible issue with the 2 quart filters with no anti-drain back valves. Today wheni went to fire up my K-5, the turbo sounded a little "choppy" sounding like it was lacking lubraction, then the whistle because smooth. No oil for a good 10+ seconds at startup. The entire top end of the engine drains back through the filter into the pan, even with the filter vertical it seems. Further confirmed this by hearing my lifter tap louder on startup versus after it was running for a while.

It doesn't help that the turbo oil feed is down by the filter with the Banks setup, so it naturally wants to drain back but i did notice it.

I'll be pulling the 51794 off and trying the Wix 51060 with the anti-drain back tomorrow to see if there's a difference.

I just don't like running the charger with no oil, even just for a few moments. Really accelerates the wear.

I did not really notice any difference in startup. Ive used regular filters and the 51794 off an on with differnt oil types ect...I dont see how any filter would stop just about everything from draining into the crankcase. Did you also try a differnt oil by chance, or become more sensitive to the noises looking for issues?

Yep, I agree.... 10 seconds without oil pressure multiplied by a few hundred starts is a loooong time to spin the turbo with no pressure.

Been running the 51794 for close to a year if not more now. Switched between Rotella and Delvac, both 15w-40. Noticed it, but now with the turbo on it basically confirms it.

You can see it in the oil pressure gauge too. It'll twitch, like air is hitting the sending unit. That started with the first 51794 i used, and it's done it with them all.

My ears are quite sensitive(even if i know my hearing is going), just the other day i diagnosed a snapped timing belt by hearing an engine crank for about 2 seconds, from across a grocery store parking lot. Dealt with a lifter tap in that engine for almost 2 years and was able to listen around that for other issues. The tapping is clearly more pronounced when cold, but still present when warm.

An anti-drain back filter will greatly slow down oil from draining back over a non-anti drain back filter. It doesn't have to be 100% efficient IMO. It doesn't have to hold pressure in there, just keep gravity from doing it's thing.

Will be interested to hear how it turns out with the filter change and several cold starts.

Did you have to add more oil into the crankcase when you added the turbo? I guess its not that much volume added though. Any used oil analysis by chance, or much blowby or coolant loss?
