Electric Fan clutch

On the temp control : having one adjustable feeding a relay is the way to go.

You can play with temp settings it and dial it in to your specific needs. If easy to change between a couple settings, you could have an economy mode and a heavy use load.

Also with relay, the a/c can control it to come on and give you colder air. Then the ability to have a switch in the dash for the big hill that you would rather get a jump start on cooling before the heat starts adding up. Then if you are nutso like me and like to drive through deep water, you can have a fan shut off switch so you dont break or bend fan blades and possibly have blades eat radiator and belt. - seen that several times offroading.
 
But wonder how a 185-200 range would work.

I'd go with the thermostat temperature plus 10*F as a hard trigger point where the fan is using an On / Off configuration (Example: 180*F thermostat, 190*F trigger). Reasoning is that when just cruising, I see -4* to +6*F on a normal basis for the ECT and would not want the fan engaged until the temperature trended outside of the 'normal' range. Naturally, I remain open to inputs.


Did you ever seal the gaps around the radiator to force more air through the radiator and shroud so the radiant heat hits the fan clutch?

Not yet . . . Still on the planner :)
 
Dumped the slushbox and installed a stick.
I don't recall seeing a thread on this. TTS would be a cooler place with a thread on that.....:cool:

Fair enough ;) While the swap was not out of the ordinary, there were a few lessons learned to share.

Took the words right out of my mouth, Nate! LOL! We used to say in the Army, when the new updates for regulations would come out (like the Maintenance Update or Supply Update) to "don't look at the pictures, those are only for Warrant Officers to use, read the regs only!" Reason being, EVERY time there was an example of a "correctly" filled out Maintenance Record or Supply Requisition in the Update, it would be wrong! And usually with multiple errors!

I'm sure @Paveltolz and any other prior service member will confirm that, too.
 
Getting ready to order the parts for this mod... I will have to change my water pump, there are a few options on them. Any opinions on these? One other thing, I have a dual thermostat housing on now. Should I go back to the Single?

I'd get the AC Delco. You don't know if you're getting the balanced flow with the others.
Seems like Chris posted about flow kooler being a good option as well.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you picked the wrong AC Delco water pump. I don't know why the part number isn't more readily available (at least I don't know how to find it easily). You want the other Delco pump. Here's the info pulled from another thread (courtesy of @Paveltolz):

From the MaxxTorque article Bill wrote a while back.
"At the conclusion of an exhaustive evaluation, we had determined a clear and decisive winner in the factory service replacement water pump: part number 88894035. This GM pump proved to be vastly superior to all others in terms of bias with a much improved and nearly equal coolant flow, side-to-side at 2,500 RPM. This represents a tremendous improvement in flow to the passenger side under heavy operating conditions. Where the flow rate on the passenger-side had been a paltry 22 GPM with the ’97 high volume flange type pump, the 88894035 pump provided 48 GPM!
"During this work, we performed evaluations of both single and dual thermostat systems with the good pump. We realized the best cooling system performance when we combined this improved pump with the older style, pressure-balanced, single thermostat type system. This combination creates desirable pump-pressure in the coolant passages of the cylinder block and heads that helps to prevent steam pockets. Another very important characteristic of this type thermostat is that it simultaneously blocks the water pump bypass port when fully open in order to route all coolant to the radiator under high load conditions. This is our favourite combo."
