For the 1"-14 filters, you can also add a Donaldson P553203 or a P553207. Both of these filters will fit the 1"-14 filter head, both are rated 99% efficient at 3μ, and are drainable water separators, but the P553207 is about 1" longer than the P553203.

In checking on a few other filters, it appears that Donaldson is constantly updating and changing their filters. I just noticed that the P551311 used to be a 2 micron HE filter, and now it is listed as a 3 micron HE. :???: As always, just be sure to double check everything.

Yeah, I've noticed that there ARE NO filters from Donaldson rated at 2μ absolute. Also, I looked up the P551743 you listed in the 2μ section. Donaldson is saying that one is 3μ nominal, not absolute. Which means it's likely 10μ or 7μ absolute.

I run the P553203 on the vacuum side of my 02' Ford, which has a factory lift pump. I started out with a Racor 645 filter head and a R45S filter. I found that the smaller diameter filters like the 1R-0749 and P553203 will fit that housing, but the Racor filters will not fit the smaller housings.

I just installed a Nicktane fender filter kit on my Dad's 02' Duramax, and have one waiting for my brother's 01' Duramax. When the CAT 1R-0749 wears out, I'll use a Donaldson P553207 to replace it.

There seems to be a huge inconsistency among manufacturers when using μ ratings to nominal and absolute ratings.

When I put the thread together, Donaldson was advertising them as 2 micron 99% efficiency, but I just noticed that they seem to have changed to 3 micron 99% efficiency. I also had good luck with the Baldwin spin-on filters. They are put together very well. As are the CAT filters. I have not used a Donaldson spin on yet to compare. I do however have a couple of NAPA 2 micron microglass filters that I will use next thanks to Grady!

Here is one more twist on the "micron" ratings stuff. Apparently, there is a new testing standard on filters. This method cannot test anything less than 4 μm. So, Caterpillar now has a new line of filters dubbed "Ultra High Efficiency," that go beyond the "Advance Efficiency" of the 1R-0749 and 1R-0750. Well, I was going to edit the previous post, but I don't see an edit button.

Oh well. One of the Cat UHE fuel filters is the Caterpillar 299-8229. It has a M12x1.5 threads, so I'm guessing it won't flow well unless you've got a lift pump pushing pretty hard. Baldwin lists the BF7990 as a cross reference.

The next size up appears to be the Cat 306-9199 & 364-5287 which can replace a 1R-0751. Those would have 7/8"-14 threads and a 2.89" (74 mm) gasket. In order to retrofit a UHE filter to a truck, I'll need a filter head that will accept it. I'm having trouble locating a filter head with a 7/8"-14 stud. Cat makes a head, but I've not been able to pin down the part number yet.

Thank you sir! I spent a while looking through the UFE filters trying to find a 1-14 thread filter with the new ones mentioned, but had no luck. Maybe CAT is still manufacturing them as of this time.
