Corvairwild's No start

Code 18, the filter is a clip on bunch of magnets, which just snap around the wire. I wanted to remove and replace with the newer style from the parts truck, but the fellow was aggravated, and wanted me to leave. CPS? I made as much vid as he would allow, and will post in a day or two

Here is a link to a PDF that covers a lot of troubleshooting. Air in fuel can also give you this kind of trouble. Sticking injectors for white start up smoke comes to mind.

So I drove the Sub to San Jose, just outside San Francisco, chugging up the pass by the San Luis reservoir, 25mph, never skipped a beat, and it's down on power cruising the flatlands to Morgan Hills Cal...only runs 52mph It now has stalled twice while idling, and I had to spray silicone (lube, all I had) to get it to start. But then it's fine, just low on power, not much above 2200rpm. Tranny shifts hard, as if it's in limp mode, but shifts to fourth, and stays in lockup just fine, except most recently as it's losing a little more power, therefore downshifting more readily.
I'm really thinking it's sucking air, as when I pulled in for fuel, it wouldn't restart hot, so I plugged in the new remote PMD, and it did start, but stalled 10 minutes later for a PP stop, and needed the sillycone spritz...

I'm in touch w Buddy, and I really think its an air leak. It needs a pressure vacuum test. Cracked fuel line? It runs down the road all day at 55-60, never skips a beat, but now is stalling after idling. I changed the PMD to a remote that was installed and unused, but stalled 10 minutes later, and stalled pulling into the hotel parking lot again 10 mins later, and wouldn't re start, so we pushed it the last few feet... and that was last nite. We have to drive 3000 + miles home, to the nasty east, and what's in store in the cold? it may not start at all! How much can I crank it??? I'll kill the starter

So I drove it over the San Luis reservoir pass, chugged up at 25mph, not a prob, and made it to Fresno, and she stalled once while idling, and was stupid hard to start. I unplugged the OS, and unscrewed the fuel cap a tad, no change at all, so I plugged the OS back in, and she started quicker, ran real ruff for 30 seconds, and finally (?), the check lamp came on, and she smoothed out. This repeated every time I started her... so I suspect a bad connection at the OS. I do have the entire harness from the parts truck. I'll drive to Central Coast tmrw, and leave it alone till I get there. It may start hard and stall at idle, but does run at 56 or so without even a hiccup... As long as it's in Limp mode...

Thx fer moving this to a new thread. I tried to put in the vehicle, but didn't know where it went. It's a 1994 Suburban 2500 4x4 6.5 TD.

Latest update? I made it to the central coast, took some great pix at Pismo Beach, met up w Buddy, and he worked on things f a couple hours. We'll move the Optical Sensor timing to a better spot tmrw, and keep you posted.

Thx fer the correction! I'm going to see Buddy this AM, and sorry to be behind in my vids, I'm making so many, so try to keep them in order, which means when I post, it's from 2-3-4 days ago...

I like beach, beach good.

If buddy worked on it and did'int fix it up then its going to be a real strange problem. Without rereading the whole post again, you have tried a known good PMD? if yes and was remote try pluging in direct to short truck harness to eleminate ext cable.

I got there after dark, his steaming dinner on the table. So we just hooked up the computer and checked every reading, swapped to his computer, checked the IP tag # and wiggled a few cables. I believe someone was touching things they shouldn't have, who knows how long ago. I have very little history, that's why the OS needs to be centered in it's travel as it was at the far end, drivers side.

There's a new PMD on the bumper that I just hooked up after it randomly stalled, but it stalled again 10 mins later, so it was just a hiccup. Keep in mind I drove 250 yest to see Buddy, crossing the long steep San Luis Reservoir...

I looked at you videos above and wish I had my 15 minutes back :hihi: When you say "new PMD" its actually an old black Stanadyne PMD and the ext cable is a cheap Chinese POS. So both your PMDs are suspect along with the cable. IMO its that (until you try a known good PMD) or the IP itself going bad.

Who's who in the photos? Come on now. Tell us, we all want to know. It is nice to put a name to a face here at TTS. :D

Too bad I'm on the road around the state this week and off to Colorado by way of Pomona next week or I'd offer you garage and tool space here outside SLC plus a drop box for shipping parts from KS.
You could still have the stuff shipped to a UPS point of pick up along the intended route home. Anyway, hang in there and safe journey.

Well boys and girls... It's all fixed, and the proof is a speeding ticket I just got outside Palm Springs at 87MPH...

So what was the prob??? Many... I will attempt to repeat what we discovered in 6 hours of diagnostic work. I have near zero knowledge or experience w electronics, so bear w me... OS too far to the drivers side, advanced I believe 3x spec. IP to far retarded(?), wrong timing ring in correct badged IP or incorrect chip in computer for correct IP timing ring. We couldn't tell without disassembling IP. Also my computer was giving false readings, so we swapped in Buddys, from his temporarily non-running '94 2wd, and it started rite up, revved to redline, and we went for a drive. I was able to power up hills, get 6 lbs of boost w the wastegate wired shut, as I have an almost dead vacuum pump.

We had to remove the IP cover 3 times to tweak the OS into an acceptable place, and I vidded alot of the operation, so I'll post tmrw AM. It's 2:40 AM, we just arrived in Palm Springs, and to prove how well it's running, I got a speeding ticket for 87mph just outside of town...

So after everything, no air leaks, IP is fine, and fuel (quality) is good. I did hook up the original PMD, (the cheap China PMD cable was fine, but still cheap junk)/ Buddy upped the shift pressure and shift speeds a bit. I also found the starter bracket dangling. I had just installed a new one w great difficulty on Sunday. I guess that shows how much it's needed, as I had def titened the bolts! I used locktite this time, and it starts w a quick twist of the key!

Oh, and who's who? I'm the skinny creature w the black gloves

As payment for his hard work at solving a real mystery, I gave him 2 1lb bags of Cereal Marshmallows
