Location
In Arizona, buying another diesel Suburban
Wow, interesting reading... http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/sh...and-Stanadyne-Dealer-Cant-Figure-It-Out/page2

I'm heading to Phoenix Wednesday to buy a barely running '94 Suburban. Owner says it was running great at 264k, and it died, and will only start/run in limp mode w the Optical Sensor disconnected. No difference with the (harness) filter bypassed.

So, I bot and had shipped a good used IP from a junk '94, 5068 too, and it should arrive just before I arrive by plane.

I read that I should scribe the OS position, which I will be sure too before I remove it. What fasteners hold on the OS? I will have to buy tools when I get there. I didn't ask the owner if he checked for any codes, but from reading here, sounds like I should check the oil pressure switch and lift pump and crank position sensor. I got the IP just in case the OS doesn't fix the no run/limp issue.

Here's me w my '95 Sub, also from Phoenix, (so NO RUST!), DS144 alt bracket I was making in hand

Yep you're a collector..lol. You outta head over the 'introduction thread' and make it official!

We've got a good bunch here..

OS replacement info:
http://www.mamut.net/royh/newsdet9.htm

BTW,what does the last few posts have to do with the OP's truck?

Corvair probably found the thread on a search '6.5 no start' and is going to buy a truck with a 'no start' situation, so now by reading this thread, he is; a) better informed,, b) being social,, c) will be a good asset to the TTS community.. ;)

So I picked up the truck, like usual, there's lots more wrong with it than the seller declares, but such is the game. It runs and drives down the road, put 50 miles on it today.... UPDATE.. Put on 225 miles today from Phoenix to Palm Springs Cal, and A friend noticed that the new lift pump isn't working, so ordered a new oil press switch, and will pick it up and install tmrw. Maybe that's my hard start, low power?

Before you change the OPS, check for voltage at the lift pump fuse. You can run the lift pump continuously by running a fused jumper to the side of the lidt pump fuse going to the lift pump.

If you have voltage coming from the OPS, you can do the dual lift pump relay upgrade and skip changing the OPS for a long time. It doesn't take much amperage or voltage to power the relays.

The upgraDE should be done anyway on a 94 or 95 and you can usually save the price of the OPS for a while - several years and still ticking on the 95 Tahoe.

You can have full voltage coming from the OPS, but not enough amps to run the lift pump.

So here's the update... I stopped in at a Diesel/electric specialist in El Cajon-San Diego, and he checked all the electrical, and after a couple of hours he changed to the used Optical sensor I supplied. Result? No change, still hard starting, and no power/won't rev over 2200 RPM. The fuel looked a little too yellow, even tho I had filled it from empty, and a couple times from half. Maybe just our imagination. The filter looked decent, and the reservoir was reasonable clear. The lift pump is also running while running, so we ruled out the oil pressure switch.

He thot it could be the computer, or maybe the spinning ring in the pump, as it won't start until it cranks and changes to limp mode. I'm then able to drive it with low power, crawl up hills, and get 15-16mpg, top speed about 58mph.

I guess I'll just drive it to Kansas, where a friend has the used computer from the truck I got the IP from.

Code 18, the filter is a clip on bunch of magnets, which just snap around the wire. I wanted to remove and replace with the newer style from the parts truck, but the fellow was aggravated, and wanted me to leave. CPS? I made as much vid as he would allow, and will post in a day or two

Sounds like you have some problems that deserves its own thread.

Yeah, if a moderator wants to move my stuff around, that would be fine. We're in Carona California this AM, going to cold crank er up, and fill the hotel parking lot w smoke. She'll cough to life, stall a couple times... At least the ignition lock cylinder is new, and 2 new batterys, and good starter w the important front bracket installed. And while the diesel guy was fooling around checking the wiring, I cleaned up the corroded battery cables

Yep I'd like to see you have a thread of your own on your new 'burb.. Each truck has a different situation. Forum diagnoses can get long in the tooth.
