Camp food.

Half the joy I get from camping is food from the grill, how bout we post up some camp recipes?

One of my favorites is taking silver doller mushrooms, cut them in half and wrap a piece of bacon around it and holding it in place with a tooth pick or skewer and grilling them untill the bacon is done. Every one loves them and the cook steals his share while grilling.

All of these sound so dang good. But truckie, yours is the one I will be trying very soon. Do you season the shrooms at all? A little garlic salt on them, and I'd be on cloud nine.

I havn't yet but it's going to happen soon, a little garlic salt will change it up a bit.

Peach and Blueberry Cobbler

Start with a 10" dutch oven. If you don't know what one of these are, you can find them at Bass Pro or Cabela's or any outdoor store. They are a cast iron pot with 3 or 4 short legs on the bottom and a cast iron lid. You can cook just about anything you can think of in one. I done everything from desserts to stews and chicken.

For this Cobbler, add 1 big can of sliced peaches and one can of blueberry pie filling.
In seprate bowl mix 1 box yellow cake mix with the water called for on the box, and spread over the fruit already in the dutch oven.
Next cut a stick of butter in pats and place evenly over cake mix.
Place the lid on and place 12 hot briquettes underneath the dutch oven and 12 on top of lid. wait about 45 minutes or when it smells done, it is. Serve in a bowl with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. This is by far our entire camping groups favorite part of our weekends. Also feel free to use pretty much any kind of fruit or different type of cake mix. One of our other favorites is cherry pie filling and chocolate cake mix.

Now that sounds good:drool5: Thanks!

This is one of my favorite reasons to go camping. The food is always so much fun to cook and taste so good.

thanks for the tip truckie481. if it wasnt raining for the nexrt week, i dont mind because i am stuck studying anyway, i would have given that a try tonight.

Dont feel like cleaning up?

This is GREAT for the last day, when you have to get everyone fed, and moving in the morning.

What you need: Eggs (usually 2 or 3 per person. more if your a redneck)
Zip-Lock Bags or cheaper equivalent (2 per person)
Milk and what ever add-ins you want (eg. Bacon bits, Bell Peppers, What you usually like in an omlette)

Bring a pot of water to a boil.

While waiting for it to boil, crack the disired number of eggs per person in to individual bags.

Add a small amount of milk, about 1/4 cup or less. You can use water instead, but milk tastes way better. Add desired toppings (bacon, cheese, etc.). Seal the bag.

Squish the egg and stuff together until well mixed and the yolks are mixed in.

Then place the bag in another bag, with the zippers facing opposite directions (place bag w/ egg in zipper side towards ground, and outer bag, zipper pointing towards sky).

Place bags in boiling water until cooked thoroughly.

Remove bags, but be careful. THE BAGS WILL BE HOT!!

Remove outer bag, then un-zip the inside, and eat out of the bag. Just throw the bag away, and dump the water out. NO MESS!!

:hurray:

We are doing this for our campout with scouts next weekend!

I like using a dutch oven too, a "Lodge" made in the USA. Feet on the bottom and rimed lid. I like doing a buffalo roast (local meat locker carries it), pealed taters, carrots, onions, etc. etc. sit it on top of some kingsford coals and put some on the top. Wait till the meats done and dig in...:drool5:

Great, now I have to find room for a dutch oven.

Here's one we call 'Cinnamon twists'

Take a tube of Pilsbury biscuits (brand does seem to matter and they can't be past the expiration date).

roll the dough ball into a snake and wrap it tightly around a metal hot dog poker(this part does take some practice)

cook over fire until done, the biscuit will release from the poker easily when its cooked, nice hot coals, not much flame works best

Coat the twist in melted butter then dredge in sugar and cinnamon.

It's kind of like a cinnamon roll snack

MMMM!!! Next campout, im trying this!

taters

Take 3-4 potatoes per person and slice them in to 1/16" to 1/8" and set aside now take 1 tbl spoon of worcestershire sauce, 1 tbl spoon of lemon juice and two tbl spoons of ketchup and mix them together in a bowl and set aside, now cut 18" pieces of tin foil (full width) for each person, place the shiny side down and fold in half then open back up, spread a tbl spoon of butter in the center and place one persons portion of taters in the crease, add a slice of onion and pepper and salt, now place 1 tbl spoon of the ketchup mixture on top and close the tin foil over it. fold the edges up towards the center to seal the taters in. Cook over some good coals for 20-30 min ( the foil will fill with steam ) be carefull when opening, steam burns hurt.

Ive heard of it,,, yet to try it. We will see how it goes, hopefully its not a disaster!:cornut:

That is a small scale verson of how they cook the eggs for boots at MCRD. When I was there I got stuck in the kitchen for a week cooking breakfast and they cook all the scrambled eggs in big 30 gallon tubs os boiling water. It was weired at first but it is easy to do and hard to burn them that way.

As far as my favorites I like chicken and rice in a dutch oven

Takes; one can cream of chicken, one can cream of mushroom, one pound rice, +- 2lb boneless skinless chicken breast, two cups milk, salt and pepper, one package dry onion soup mix

put rice in the bottom of the dutch over cover with chicken, add creams, milk, soup mix and season to taist. Put on fire and cover top with hot coals. Wait about an hour and dig in.

Brats

Being a Midwesterner we understand good brats. This is my recipe for them.

1) Six pack of good beer (Leine's Summer Shandy works sweet)
2) 1 dozen brats
3) Water
4) 3-5 large onions

Take a large pasta pot and add a six pack of beer. Place the brats in the pot with the beer and then add enough water to cover the brats that aren't in the beer. Cut up the onions and place in the pot and bring to a boil. Once boiled, take the brats and place them on a grille over the campfire. Cook until they are golden brown. Place the brats back into the pot with the beer, water and onions and bring to a boil and then simmer until everyone is ready to eat.

If you are a fan of good micro brews, if done correctly, you can make the brats take on a hint of beer flavor. If you use a stronger beer, the brats will taste like beer.

Hey, that sounds like alcohol abuse...):h

I'm really liking this thread....:drool5:

Yeah, me too. I told my wife about this thread the other day and now we are having my mom and the in laws over for a dutch oven cookout tomorrow night. I keep on saving these recipies, I'll be about 600 lbs. by the end of the summer.
