Bringing Back A Set of PYO's From The Dead

Explanations, Appologies and yes, Wheels

I feel I owe the members here and any visitor that saw how things got here a explanation and a apology.
When I started this thread it took be more than 3 hours to put the first 2 posts together and upload the pics. I don't know how to type[yet]. I look back an hour later and they were gone from the 6.5 forum. The way things usually worked if you posted something a bit off topic Jim or Tim would send a pm and say "it has to be moved but we'll give it a couple days here to get some traction or followers" That didn't happen. Jeff[8100 power] had moved it and was unaware that it usually was done that way in the 6.5 section. I guess that kind of put a burr in my shorts. I had no idea who moved it. Then when I was told I didn't look at the site the right way it kindof ground the burr around. Being half crippled and not getting much sleep compounded things.
Mikes wheels were a valid point. If you are diligent and keep them clean they will last quite a long while. I apologise for the poke that it was a hi-jack . [the burr was still in there]
I also apologize to the members and visitors for the route I steered this thread. This isn't the way any of us are here. Things just mixed badly and maybe the real thoughts didn't make it through the keyboard.
Now to the wheels. I sprayed 6 coats of clear on them. I may give them a wet sand to level the clear over the pits and a couple more coats of clear. This duplicolor clear dries very fast. I put the 6 coats on within 16 hours.
Now the part of was it worth the trouble , time and money. I bought the wheels and center caps for $75 It cost me $30 in fuel to go get them.$16 for stripper. $5 for steel wool and gloves. The clear cost $8/can. I used 4 cans so far. The acrylic enamel alleged color matched paint was $38. The color doesn't match the truck. So the money is $196 roughly The labor was close to 40 hours. I've bought very nice sets of PYO wheels for $250-300. So this really wasn't a cheaper way to get a set of these wheels but if you already have a set and the clear is peeling it's not too bad. These were pitted so badly it took hours on each wheel just to get them looking half ways decent. They do look much better than they did and they have color highlights. pictures

Glad you got them all finished up Barry. As far as the paint not matching, did you look up the paint code for your truck?! If you did, I think I know the problem.

GM code 84 is Dark Hunt Club Red Metallic. It is also Hawaiian Orchid Metallic. Trucks with code 84 were Dark Hunt Club Red Metallic, cars were Hawaiian Orchid Metallic which is more of a purple/red. Only reason I know is Devin's dad bought a 96 that is Dark Hunt Club Red Metallic and upon braking the vin down, it lists paint code 84 as both.

And for another discussion about coatings. Here is a prime example why I dislike powdercoat. Due to it's thickness and strength, it doesn't crack/chip easily. However once some moisture gets under it, in some cases it will stay intact and rust underneath it. These are brackets I recently cleaned for my airbags. You can see how they just look rough and dirty at first, and really see the extent of it as I go along. I'd personally would have rather had these painted to begin with, as the rust scaling would have been much less significant and they would have cleaned up much better.

Those shure aren't pretty. I still think it goes back to the prep and quality of the powdercoat and the person applying it and baking it. If done right powdercoat is indestructible. Much better than good paint. I will say though that sometimes a can of rustoleum and a recoat whenever needed is the way to go. Easy and cheap just a bit more labor intensive.
Yea, I got the paint code from the vin check on compnine and they called it Hawaiian orchid. The comp nine vin check didn't give the silver number of the two-tone. I have a 93 that is the same colors and it gave both paint codes and also called it Hawaiian Orchid. At least it was only a pint. I wouldn't have been very happy to pay well over $300 a gallon for the wrong color.

Yeah, I'm assuming it's for your truck that is dark red, correct?! If so it's the Hunt Club color.

As far as the powdercoating goes, I've seen both cases where it lasts forever and stuff like these brackets. Every piece of my airbags were like this, all original powdercoating from firestone.

Hey

Being half crippled and not getting much sleep compounded things.

Ya know when I first saw you getting red with some of the posters, that was the FIRST thing I thought of. You'd said this in the past. I've never met you, and KNOW you wouldn't truly come off that way. Living with physical pain will shorten one's patience with anything. I hope you can get relief in some way, whether it be here, bed, meds, Doc, football, whatever!

The 2 trucks are a dark redish maroon metalic/silver tu-tone. I junked a 94 sub and 97 truck that were both just very slightly more maroon. The hood from the sub is on the 94 truck these are going on. You have to really look to see the color difference but there is. The color paint I got is purple metalic. Really not much red in it.IMG_1109_194.jpgThis is the 93

Yeah, the red from the 94 truck is defiantly Dark Hunt Club Red Metallic, which carries that same paint code as that Hawaiian Orchid Metallic for the cars. I have NO idea why GM used the same paint code for these colors, as evident by confusion it can create. The 93 looks like the color of my 88, which is lighter. It's Garnet Red Metallic.

Here is a camaro in Hawaiian Orchid...
