Blowing coolant out the overflow tank. Head gasket or block??

Well I took the turbo off & the exhaust manifold & from what I can tell it is coming from the gasket area right over where the starter heat shield is. From what little I can see the gasket looks fine & I see no evidence of anything that got caught in there when I put the head back on. There is nothing in that area but the gasket it could be leaking from IMO. I was able to get my torque wrench on the head bolts that aren't under the valve cover. I set it for 100ft pds & the bolts did turn a bit but not much. Hopefully my buddy will be able to come down tonight with the coolant pressure tester. I know this is a stupid question but can I try torquing those bolts down more to see if it will seal it up? I could take the valve cover off & check the bolts in that area & torque them down a bit more. I know your not supposed to have to do that but can I at least try without warping/cracking something. Only other thing to do is take the head.

I would wait to wrench them down any more till you get it press tested. If the head is bottoming out out on something. It needs to be addressed before you warp/bend something.

I am going to wait. Probably would make my problem worse or create another one. Shouldn't have to torque them down anymore anyway. Called my buddy & he's bringing the tester down tonight.

I am going to call the mcahine shop & ask them about the precups. If that's the problem why isn't the drivers side leaking. He milled both heads?

You said the took 15 off of one and 8 off the other. then you put on 10 thou thicker gaskets. If this head is bottoming out on something I am willing to bet it is the 15 thou one.
-15 + 10= -5
-8 + 10= +2

The head that is leaking is the one that had 15 tho taken off. The one with 8 tho taken off seems to be fine. I haven't run it long enough yet to know for sure though. 5 tho doesn't sound like much to me but I maybe that's all it takes. Maybe this ins't the first time these heads have been milled & in total there may be more then 15 tho taken off. Who knows for sure. I looked at the pictures I took of the passenger side block & the dowel pin looks like it is right in line with where it looks like it is leaking.

One more question. If I have to take the head off can I reuse the gasket & head bolts? I already have some on order just in case & I know the bolts stretch so for the cost if I have to put new ones on I will but of course if I can reuse I will. Just don't want to have to tear her down a thrid time.

Any time you are into an engine 5 thou is considerable, unless the engine is huge 1000+ cubic inch. Even then certain things need to be tight.

Well I found the problem. It's not verrrrrrrrry gooooooood. It's not the gasket or the head!!!!!! Only one thing left.
My buddy brought down his coolant pressure tester so I hooked it up & started pumping. Got to about 6 psi & started seeing coolant coming out but it wasn't coming from the gasket area as I thought.:rolleyes5: But the heat shield over the starter was blocking my view. So I took that off & pumped her up again & HELLO THERE YOU ARE YOU STUPID PEICE OF CRAP BLOCK LEAK!!!!!!!!! Yay for me. A steady stream coming from a crack in the block. Its baddddddd to.:mad2: The leak is directly in line with the last head bolt near the firewall. Time for another stupid question. Can this be fixed/welded or am I f@#$%^%?

Here's a pic. Sorry its not very clear. I suck at taking pictures.

I can't see much in the picture but you have nothing to lose by welding it as long as it's just an exterior crack. I would if it were mine.

MGW has talked about lock&stitch, that may be another option

Ok so what if it is both? Hard upper rad hose, white smoke, possible coolant in oil, gurgling & bubbling in coolant bottle. I know some of this may be just from the intital startup but I'm not a betting man but I would be alot of money that it is internal as well. Have read a bit about this in the kast few minutes. This potentially will fix my problem. Wow I thought there was no chance at all. I need to learn more about lock & stich. If I used it for a bolt hole will I still have to weld?

"PM" Missy Good Wrench, like Leo said.......as she is very knowledgable on this (helicoil, I think it's called) subject. she'll give you good advise.

I would just suck it up and get a new block....if you are in a money crunch - go to a wrecker and grab an older 6.2 - bolt everything from the 6.5 onto it and away you go....

I have found another motor( actually a whole truck). It's in a 92 but the motor is out of a 98. Truck has 300,000 km on it but the guys says the motor has 180,000km on it. Engine is still in the truck & can be driven away. He says it is a f engine. Has a mechanical IP on it that was rebuilt from his original engine. He wants $1200 for the whole truck. I might be able to beat him down to $1000. Would this engine match up to everything on my truck. Simple as yank my POC engine out & drop this one in? The truck is a reg cab & mine is ext cab. Will that matter? Mechanical IP any better then the electronic? No pmd to worry about. If I did this I would have lots of replacement parts off mine I guess.

Well I guess this is the end of the line for me & my baby. Haven't been able to find an engine that I would be comforatble enough to take a chance on & I'm not putting anymore time & money into the engine I have so I listed it last night & sold it today. Got $2000.00 out of it. Probably gave it away but I just couldn't look at it anymore & I need a truck like yesterday. Money will go to another. Buddy has an engine he is going to put in it that has 300,000km on it. Good luck. Hopefully it works for him. I'm pretty bummed actually. The truck wasn't much but I really liked & it worked well up until now. Anyway it is what it is.

A great big thanks to everyone who helped me out. Even though it didn't turn out the best I am still glad I did it myself. Could have paid someone else big $$$ & still would have turned out the same way and I learned alot that I can take with me for future projects. I don't plan on getting another 6.5 but who knows. I may be back around someday.

Good vibes to all you 6.5ers & have a good one.:D

Simone, sorry it didn't work out for you. We are, however, all very proud of you for taking on a project like this and happy that you felt comfortable enough to look for and accept our help.

Don't be a stranger... this place isn't just a 6.5 diesel board - we have room for lots of other trucks and questions on here!

Thanks JiFaire. This site was very helpful. Very nice people to talk to & very knowledgeable. No regrets either. You win some you lose some I guess. I probably will be on this site again. Got me eye on a 01 7.3.:smile5:

Thanks again.
