Blowing coolant out the overflow tank. Head gasket or block??

XXX2 on that one

I remember the first time I did a 6.5 rebuild.
I hade never been into one before but it had to be done.

Just got out the tools and this gal got damn dirty but the sucker was out swinging on a chain in about 9 hours.

Hope that you do well with whatever you decide to do.

Best

. Got me eye on a 01 7.3.:smile5:

Thanks again.

Have the tranny checked out by a shop. They are known to fail. Also crank sensor(recall) and check the waterpump. I just did one on my Mother's Superduty this weekend. Easy job BTW. ABout the only thing easy on a PS.
Missy, I saved the old WP for the threaded hub and I have my old 6.5 WP off the Tahoe...Time to experiment....

Well I found the problem. It's not verrrrrrrrry gooooooood. It's not the gasket or the head!!!!!! Only one thing left.
My buddy brought down his coolant pressure tester so I hooked it up & started pumping. Got to about 6 psi & started seeing coolant coming out but it wasn't coming from the gasket area as I thought.:rolleyes5: But the heat shield over the starter was blocking my view. So I took that off & pumped her up again & HELLO THERE YOU ARE YOU STUPID PEICE OF CRAP BLOCK LEAK!!!!!!!!! Yay for me. A steady stream coming from a crack in the block. Its baddddddd to.:mad2: The leak is directly in line with the last head bolt near the firewall. Time for another stupid question. Can this be fixed/welded or am I f@#$%^%?

Here's a pic. Sorry its not very clear. I suck at taking pictures.

Is that head bolt hole blind? if so, it could be full of crap and when you tightened it down, the bolt bottomed out and cracked the block. Strange it didn't do it before?

My new ride. 01 f-350 7.3 powerstroke. Went to Augusta Maine yesterday & bought her. Haven't got her home yet though. Have to take paperwork to the border & wait 72 hrs before I can bring her home.

Lots of work been done to her. New HD tranny, ball joints, tie rods, brakes front & back, new rotors, new manual hubs. 115,000 miles. Fully loaded with leather. Has Tranny temp, boost & EGT gauges. Towing package. In great shape.

Very happy to be back in the saddle again. Haven't decided yet if I'm going to convert her to veg yet but probably will.

Can't wait to get her home.:D:D

Man Ace you are fast. Have talked to many guys on veg sites that run veg & have for many miles with no problems.

Not saying it can't be done, just price a set of injectors before you make your final descision. Fear of injectors is why I sold mine. I could replace the engine in my GMC for what a set of injectors cost. IIRC about 4-500$ a piece. My main beef with the Superduty was the ride. thing was probably out of all the trucks the best load handling truck but man did it ride horrible.

I was going to buy one as a sander/plow flatbed and it had a rear main seal in need of replacement, aparantely you need to remove the engine to replace that too....

BTW here is what a PS waterpump looks like at 70k miles. My mother said the truck was making a funny noise.
I suggest not letting it go this long. A few more miles and the timing case cover would have been toast and might have had to forget the e brake next to that cliff by her driveway.

Before I decide to veg the truck I need to learn more about it. I don't know much about the 7.3 other then I have heard many say it is a good reliable engine & runs great on veg. Plus I want to drive it for a couple of months to make sure I like it & see how it works, tow's, rides etc. I may not like it & decide to get rid of it. I got a pretty good deal on it & diesel trucks that don't have a million miles on them or they want a million dollars for them are hard to find where I live. I can probably sell it & make money if I want to. I may decide not to veg & sell the oil I collect to pay for diesel. I really lile the feeling of driving down the road for nothing though.

Is it pretty safe to say that most of the newer diesels are a pain to work on & not just a 7.3 problem other then maybe the Cummins? Cummins is what I really wanted but couldn't find one even close to my price range.I have heard that to change the IP on a Dmax for example you have to take the cab off. The 6.0 is not fun either.

No IP on a Dmax. Common Rail. Don't have to pull the cab off a dmax to do anything I'm aware of although the dmax guys would know more about that. The 6.0 on the other hand is a real PIA to work on. 7.3 is a good engine, just parts are expensive. My experience with them was crank sensor(now under recall) and the tranny's suck as bad as Dodge if not worse. Mine went at 70k and the truck was babied. I doubt you'll like the ride. It was my biggest gripe with the truck but if you want raw pulling, towing weight carrying tough truck, it's hard to beat a superduty. I used to load mine to the roof with firewood and the springs didn't move an inch. I drove it from LI to CT towing a 16 ft skidsteer trailer loaded with equipment, 100 gal fuel tank, loaded with firewood and the plow on in the summer and truck didn't break a sweat.

Just going by what my mechanic buddy told me. He worked at a GM dealership for a while. Maybe I missunderstood him. Anyway my point is isn"t pretty much every vehicle have some part that is a major PIA to change or is really expensive? Don't get me wrong though the cost of injectors will come into play when I decide to veg or not. I am confident though that I can make it work. I have a good setup for filtering & dewatering my oil & will not cut corners when installing my second tank system.

I see what you mean about the ride. I only drove it for about 10 min but I could tell its not going to ride like my Serria did.

Thanks for the advice. Going to go spend some time reading in the 7.3 section.

Pensacola sells reman 7.3 injectors for 139$ a pop so that's not too bad at all. I remember getting prices locally of 500$ each. That was a few years ago though so now that the 6.0 and 6.4 are out parts probably got a little cheaper for hte 7.3. It's one tough truck. Probably the toughest of them all.

Probably like anythign else though... pay cheap, get cheap.... On precision parts, quality is necessary.

I liked driving every 7.3 I've driven... plenty of power.. I liked em better than the new crap..... emmisions killed em IMO. And for some reason they stopped putting the engine before the cab, and they now sit half in the firewall it seems.... stupid.

The toughest probably yep... they sit very high and don't squat much... but they ride like it too. I towed in a lot of them, with the wrecekr body on the backs of them they were comfortable. Naked pickup..... dunno.

The 7.3 Ford is probably the greatest veggy vehicle of all time. The unused fuel ports on the back of the heads provide a simple fuel delivery solution and the heads themselves add heat to the fuel prior to finding the injector. See dinofuel alternatives.

Great work, sorry to hear about your 6.5. Mine will be back together in a couple days, I really hope coolant doesn't leak all over heck, otherwise, this clunker is going for cash!

Let me answer that. 6 months at the Chiropractor after using the truck for about 10 weekends in a row back and forth from NY to CT Moving. It's the main reason I sold it. It rode like an Old Mack with 58's. The most uncomfortable seat I have ver sat in, granted mine was cheapo interior, my fathers has the leather etc . Not much better. He has an 00 ex cab SD. I would take my Dodge over it any day as far as ride. Gm rode the best but front ends a little whimpy IMO. My 2000 didn't hold the plow very well. No ground clearence. was always hitting stuff off road. Took the crossover out twice.
