Best way to mount PMD Cable.com's relocation kit.

do I even use a pad with this stuff? how much do I put on? do I pull the resistor covers and pack it in around the resistors, trying to fill all air gaps? No pad, remove plastic & pack it in there. 100% film contact on heat sink.




when I am done, what is the best way to seal the PMD to the heat sink? I have some White, General Electric (bought at wal-mart) Silicone. waterproof, paintable, 3 hour rain ready, 30 min. paint ready, dries in 24 hours. would something like this work to seal it? Goop brand adhesive IMO, but any outdoor RTV type product will work.

If so, do I just run a bead around the perimeter and thats it? Yes




It is ok to use dielectric grease in the PMD plug, correct? Yes

thanks for all the input folks, I wasnt this concerned when i put the used D-tech on the heatsink, but I want to make sure I do it up right with the brand new Stanadyne.

here is the pic of the pad. thoughts on if I should use it or not? note the pencil point sized dent near the edge. the far hole is smooshed a little bit.

basically, through my two purchases, I have fully assembled a Stanadyne 40736 PMD kit. so if you guys think the pad is ok, all I need from leroy is a heatsink and a cable, dont even need the screws.

If the pad is OK, I may just mount it with that and seal the base with silicone and call it a day, it is going in the bumper so it will be nice and cool anyways.
 
Your pad is fine, but is a FS pad not Stanadyne (Won't matter does the same job). Did you buy PMD somewhere that might need to warranty it later?
 
nope. :) ebay, in a pile of parts, for like 30 bucks. damn good deal IMO.

the heat sink, pad, screws and cable came from a different guy for like 10 bucks. he must have ordered a random kit, got a shitty heatsink, and mixed and matched to make a better kit, and sold the balance on ebay, and I bought it. I will discard the heatsink into the scrap pile, as I think it may make you cry Leroy. :)

so what does stanadyne's pad look like then?

do you have them available seperately?

is your heatsink kit any cheaper without screws?

Stanadynes is a thinner graphite looking thing.
I don't have them seperate.
My Heat sink only comes with the mounting bolt, no PMD screws as they come with the PMDs.

Inside the bumper area between the 2 nostrils,, is a plastic air deflector,, I put 4 holes in that, and zip tied my unit to the top of that plastic. That's it. No hard install, I can reach in and get the unit out if I want, and once it's out of the engine bay,, it don't matter witch way it's facing. as the heat form the PMD will be dissipated thru the aluminium fins. I can reach in there on a 90F day, after 3hrs of driving,, and the heat sink isn't any warmer than the outside air.

x2 Easy peasy.
 
I been resisting saying this but I put mine behind the license plate 4 or 5 years ago and never used a heat pad or any kind of sealant. Should you? Yes. A lot depends on how flat the heat sink is as well.
 
I'd get some heat sink compound and seal the base of PMD and ontop of screw heads. I like Goop brand adhesive because it cleans off very well on the next use.
 
My fsd kit is on Aluminum L bracket, fins forward behind driver side battery. It is currently in process of failing. I have to pop the hood and drive like that so it cools off. Have a new one from ssdiesel but my concern with mounting it in bumper is that a minor fender bender put the truck down in a heartbeat. Looking for other options?
 
Had mine mounted in front of the driver side battery on the core support behind the headlight. Was there for almost 2 years and 70k and had zero issues. Was an FSD cooler with a flight systems PMD. Moved it to Gary in the same spot ( does not fit as well with single headlights as the headlight buckets project behind the core ). No issues yet. The rest of the fleet is behind the bumper. I have never used anything other than the supplied heat pad on my PMDs.
 
Newbie on this forum . What do you guys think of SSdiesel are there pmd heatsinks and pink pad all they claim to be ???
 
I don't know about a pink pad but the heatsink is fine, just don't mount it on the intake as he recommends.
 
Mounted my first one on the intake and it lasted about 2 years , bought another put it in same place , I should probably move it ,
Is behind the bumper the best place ?? how about the the right fenderwell in the air intake stream ??
 
Behind the front bumper, in front of all the heat the motor and radiator radiate.
 
About to mount my fsd from ssd on intake as recomended. So cant answer you for another 100,000 mi. I will say ssd has not steered me wrong on anything. Tech support is the best in the 6.5td buisness. From what I understand its not engine heat that cooks the pmd it is its own worst enemy. Cooks itself. So keeping it in airstream of engine fan with heatsink is the only way to keep temp down. As soon as you park the heat stays with it. By letting truck idle a minute before cutoff fsd can cool off a bit. Air temp wont cool that much where I live in mississippi. It would still be 90°-110° all day and just get hotter parked in sun after driven. Ssd tests products and has the first patent on cooler for fsd. Read about fsd pmd failures and you will see they fail in all possible locations. Older ones are inferior to updated ones. Ssd carries the newest version available. Even so called bulletproof one fail in bumper. I have researched as much as possible on this and my conclusion is carry a spare or go mechanical ip
