Bad Grinding in gear.??? $$$$ ????

Advance lists on for $52, probably in stock too, because every time I need a part my local store has to order it from Worcester!

I really feel like the flexplate is probably your problem. They can make a horrible noise. I've also seen torque convertor bolts come out and bang around in there, sounds like a gun battle taking place.

now that you have narrowed it down some, I would suggest dropping the dust cover as far as the crossover allows. You should be albe to learn something that way. You can always strategically cut the crossover, and re assemble with band clamps as a temporary measure while you wait for another crossover and a better day to do the project.

the flex plates are different from the BB/SB. they're diesel only setups. it does sound like the plate/bolts are your cause. you can put the starter and see some but the inspection cover is the way to go. I wonder if the weight is loose or came right off?

Thanks guys for the support and comments.

Ok, So a flexplate and flywheel we are both referring to the same thing then. That does help.

My buddy said the same thing Dan, Driveshafts, tranny mount, slide forward few inches, and thats it. He's only going to charge me 75-80 bux to come to my house with Torches and do whatever I can't do.:thumbsup:

My job tonight is to pull the driveshafts, and starter. He'll come with the torches ASAP and drop the xover and do the rest :)

I just picked up this piece of shit Ford van box truck, thing putters, dogs, and reminds me why I hate gasoline.

Can't wait till the day this is behind me. Hopefully soon, as It cost me 10bux just to drive it home @ $.79 a mile............. **** me. Where's that suicide smiley when you need it???

Truck gave me a good run, got one end of the crank all done up, but my problem was the other end!

On the plus side, my ride home was AC filled.... FORD SUCK. It does stop nice though.

flexplate and flywheel go in the same place and do part of the same job. flexplates have the balance and a spot to bult a torque converter. the flywheel weighs alot more and give you the balance+ a spot for the clutch to rides against. you'll know the difference as soon as you pick it up LOL.

things aren't to bad to get too once the crossover is out of the way. the inspection plate is just held on by 6 bolts. the top 2 are a PITA though.

I used to have a 86 chevy co truck that broke the flexplate every 5000 miles:mad2: It got so me and the co mechanic could change it in less than 45 minutes:eek:. The grinding noise is the flexplate rubbing against the inspection cover. The starter should sound not normal also.

Another thought...

Started up no noise.

Pulled out and took off and noise.

Stopped. Put it in Park, noise dissapeared. Foot on brake In gear, grinding came back.

Sometimes in park its there. SOmetimes its not. Its most always there in drive with foot on brake.

Now its a grinding noise, I can feel it on the brake pedal. Seems to go with RPM.

Hate to say it, but except for your impression that the noise is coming from the engine oil pan area, your description matches what happened to mine just before the transfer case gave up. Have you checked the oil in your t-case recently?

My bet would be it cracked right around the crank bolts. And no, it cannot be welded. This is where OBS trucks rule. on my CUCV this would be a tit job.

Advance lists on for $52, probably in stock too, because every time I need a part my local store has to order it from Worcester!

Do you have the P/N? Advance said they have nothing listed for automatic flexplate/flywheel.

N/M I found it. The guy must be dumb in the head.

Part No. 04340

I actually found one in stock. The first idiot that told me he had no listing when I called back said yeah, theres that one, but its 3 days to order... Said I need to go to store to pay in advance. I was alraedy on the website and clicked search other local stores, and another one in Worcester had it in stock, so I flew down there and grabbed it just before they closed.

So I did my part. Starter out, driveshafts out, inspection cover off, got the part. Hopefully he can do this before Sunday so I can test it and work out of it Monday.

Now I need to make some money, Its a shame I probably wont be there when he opens her up.... I hope this is the problem. Sure sounds like its in there.

Hopefully I can return this POS ford boxer quickly.

Here's what it should look similar to when it's apart:eek:

Matt, sounds like you are doing the hard work. If you can do all the prep seems like its not much trouble just to do the whole job. Just cut the xover with a saw you might even have xover welded back when your done?
