ATT, hood IC or GL4 ?

Thanks for all your input!

I really don't believe the truck has "general cooling issues"

I am enclosing my air intake kit to keep hot air out of my intake and thinking of the ATT as my first choice:thumbsup:

Sound good?

Thanks again!

Something isn't correct a truck should not overheat, especially with new injectors, opened downpipe, 3" pipe & no cat. When overheating where is EGT and IAT, how big a tow load we talking about and ambient temps?

I like the hood ic, but i would have to be real picky on the ram ar intake. I wouldnt see a benefit without a ram ar style setup...

Truck does not overheat:nono: 97 cooling, clean rads, durabux fan kit. No air in coolant. No oil in coolant. No coolant in oil

Just loses it's torque/snot (especially in summer) after a few back to back HARD runs and/or pulling larger loads

With 5-6k out back, I betcha 2-3 hard pulls and it "goes soft". Dead stop to full speed take offs with boat, big hills etc. Under load with turbo whistlin'. It still moves okay, but once it's hot (not overheated) just no "grunt" like when it's cold

No SES (boost fooler took care of that), resetting PCM (redneck style, pull fuse to PCM for a couple minutes) doesn't help, but let it cool with hood open and the torque is back (at least for the next couple runs)

That's why I was thinking AIT climbing too high under heat/stress. Almost never happens in cold weather

So.. I am enclosing my Cold (hot) Air Intake to only get fender opening cool air (and homemade under bumper ram air scoop) and looking for a way to keep the snot the truck's got cold AT ALL TIMES:thumbsup:

Hence my original question re improvements on a budget, to keep that cool weather grunt!

your drawing air from the engine comp ? That is your problem in a nutshell. Outside air only. The mass changes when the air gets hot or something. It doesn't run the same. I remember tooling down the LIE in hot summer heat with the Pete and it always felt like something was wrong on hot days. Diesels like cold air.

So I "boxed in" my hot air intake. See attached pic. Don't laugh!

I had a piece of 3" angled pipe to extend air cleaner almost into the fender opening. I then used some scrap to make a heat shield around my sparkly new :rolleyes5: air box (left over aluminum flashing). A slit piece of hose gives it a finished look.

Still need to reroute my homade ram air. That will provide a 3" air hose from under front bumper to the air cleaner in addition to the fender opening.

Does seem much better, but not the same as any early morning (or cool day) romp

BTW, why would it run sooo much better when raining?

Wrap that up with insulating foil or whatever you can, it will make it that much better.

Natures version of WMI.

Had it installed with ATT. I was 1st person to test it without the IC after 6 mos of running with IC going on 6 mos without the IC now maybe more.

Tim, What IAT do you see with no intercooler? I did my 1st hot temp tow today and truck is running hot, IAT were over 260 degrees and coolant temps were over 210. I have an issue with my fan, clutch didn't engage at all today while towing. I am going to do a rad clean and cooler cleanse and add wetter water but the intake temps aren't helping.

Check out the recent DIY fan clutch mod too, while cleaning the rads up something else to do perhaps.

Is that with the ATT or GM8?

Depending on what ambient temperature is and the boost pressure. To see 260 f at 13 to 14 psi with an ambient temp of 90 plus is possible. The IAT temp probably did not stay at that level for very long. Was it wide open throttle or sustained ? These are all variables of IAT of plus 210 F. Need to know what air box temp was it is usually ten to twenty degree higher than the ambient. So before condemming the ATT for the overheating, lets get the facts. Thanks.

Imagine what the IAT would be at 20 psi with a holset and no intercooler.

I'm not condemming nothing. Joey D signature doesn't have any info other than the year of the truck. And I didn't remember if he had done the ATT or not. I want to get one after how good everyone says it is. And I just saw they have more in stock, but after my recent vacations I am going to have to wait. Hopefully by next summer maybe. My next problem is the wonderful state of CA. is going to be smog checking diesels 98 and newer, and they say anything not stock or not having a C.A.R.B. number, will not pass. So I'm not sure if I will just change it out every 2 years, or just stick with a GM8.

Wasn't meant like that, sorry just my baby, I would like to know what happened also.

1st this is not a bash fest on the ATT. I have one installed on my truck and even with todays temps it still works better than the GM 8 I had
The GM 8 would have had the intake temps over 300 degrees, I have seen that on my guage so it's not a guess. Tim had mentioned not needing a intercooler so I wanted to see what temps he ran and we can compare. I think an intercooler could help even more but I want to see other users info to compare before I do anything.
My issues are cooling the truck down, which I have never had an issue with until today so I suspect the radiator is clogged and the fan is not working at all. My clutch is stock 11 years old now and may have bit the dust.
One more thing is the guage on the dash or the computer in my truck is not accurate, 215 on the scanner is just under 210 on the dash. Whick do you believe?

What was the ambient temp? How many pounds boost when you saw the 260 temp, This is good to get data like this, This is what makes this site good.):h

Boost was 14-15lbs, ambient temp was around 85 or a bit hotter. Towing weight 10500lbs, cat on a GN trailer.
