A Team Turbo

Is Slim still involved?

I like the coated turbine housing.

Slim still does them, but Leroy sells them through his store as well. Personally I'm not sold on the CKO HX40 simply due to all of the quality control issues I have read about in the 6.5 forums and the DODGE boards. To many have showed up with loose shafts, and quite a few of them have grenaded on the CUMMINS(not so much of an issue with the 6.5 since it is tough to get enough fuel through one to really get them spinning). For PROVEN reliability in a true bolt on kit package it is tough to beat the ATT. The CKO HX40 is a cheaper option, but then again you do have to do some of your own fab work to make it work. And the dyno results are out there showing that there is no huge gap in power output like some would lead you to believe. To me the lower boost output of the ATT yet staying right with the others in output is a HUGE benefit to the already stressed 6.5 bottem end.

Good points, although I haven't seen a dyno yet of the HX40, maybe your thinking of the HX40ii?

Thank you. I hadn't mentioned it before because I didn't know I could mention vendors names here. I now have 3k on my ATT and diamond eye that I purchased from leroy diesel in TX. Both he and the manufacturer have been more than helpful during install and working the bugs out. I spoke with him today regarding the the hose I want, problem solved. I can also say that I had a small complaint about pricing leroy didn't even bat an eyelash, fixed! These turbos aren't just toys my truck is strictly for hauling heavy steel to the seaport in boston. With the turbo and exsaust I've paid my investment off. As I'm typing my driver has the truck crusing at 65mph down the mass pike my temp doesn't fluctuate and there's plenty of petal left.

Hey, glad you made it, welcome to TTS. It was good to talk to you today again.
Bostonguy told me his mileage went up atleast 5mpg and its like a new truck since the ATT install.
Got any pictures of the beast?

It was the CKO HX40II that WW dyno'd, but reports say the HX40 is pretty similiar in output. The early(no longer available) HX40's were the ones that started the craze for them, but they can no longer be gotten. After seeing a video of one of these HX40's explode when HOLSET tested it(and made a MIGHTY mess of the dyno room in the process), I will never try one out. You could tell from seeing the broken parts just how they are able to keep the price down so low. The ATT is also a chinese built piece, but at least it is built to a standard with quality control. And if you need parts for it they are available. If the Ebay HX40 lets go, you might as well roll the dice on another one as who knows where to get parts as you really don't have any idea what you have.

So if you look at the track record of the knock offs from a longevity AND quality stand point, you would be better off buying a used genuine HOLSET if you choose to go that route. And buy the time you get an ACTUAL HOLSET, you could have bought an ATT and saved yourself teh hassle of building the pieces to hook the HOLSET up.

Quite allowed BG; this site unlike some others out there does not curtail any mention of product or vendor or do childish things like limiting input to astericks ***** for things "blacklisted" by their management, our discussion here is open we do selectively limit use of hotlinks that go direct to vendors that compete with existing vendor bases product they pay to advertise as being vendors here. We may also if a certain product gets hot linked post over post delete the link as it becomes someones apparent ploy to advertise via the hotlink, with exception of pure spammers which get zapped as soon as we see it or are notified about it.

Discussion about products, member to the group including vendors name is acceptable and encouraged, it is just the hot linking of sites that we may have discussion in moderator forum "backroom" to see if it should stay or go, generally most stay if the link supports a question about a new service or product we haven't seen before.

Try this one, Turbo...

WW has done a great job of putting some facts on the table.

Thanks, saw that, but looks like no one has dynoed or tried the HX40 except Rob. All great info though.

Very true, I have to look up the specs of the HX40 vs the HX40ii, pretty sure the HX40 is quite a bit bigger.

It also depends on which HX40 you look up the specs on. HOLSET makes a few variants, and then you throw in the CKO where they make them just a little different to avoid any copyright issues and it gets real confusing on what is what.

The HX40II can vary in the number of blades on the CKO's so like a box of chocolates you don't know what your are going to get off fleabay. The seller didn't even know they had differences and claimed otherwise...

I would think the comparison of the smaller clone HX to the larger A-Team Turbo where the A-Team Turbo was seven horse power less but 20 or 30 foot pounds more torque, was pretty good. Boost does not make power, looks good on the gauge and kills bottom ends, when you have a lot of boost in low rpm on a high compression (22:1) diesel.

If I remember the numbers, I don't know of any other dyno numbers that compare the two turbos with the same truck, and I believe the tune was done for the smaller turbo.

With some creative tuning I can run a consistent .5 to 1 pound of boost at 1300 with the A-Team. So tuning has a great deal to do with the way a combination runs.

I've almost got a 1,000 miles on the new P400. Can't wait to find a dyno to see what the new heart plus the fresh rebuilt ATT (thanks Slim!) and KOJO can do.

You are more than welcome and I am glad that your new P400 is doing better than your other one did, LOL. The guys at Peninsular are good people, and they are impressive in their customer service and their attention to detail (very good people). It is nice working with them, they have some interesting ideas and I hope to be able to get some time with them. I have a tune I would like to run in that P400, but I don't have a way to get it into the OBD2 yet. Been talking with Wester's about the program. Lyndon has really got this tuning down to a science, but since he originated all of the definition files I guess he would. LOL.

Good idea on the Facebook page Slim. Just sent a join request. Yeah, I cannot speak highly enough for Matt, Mitch, Rose and the entire crew at Peninsular. They are the best and have a friend and advocate for life in me. Absolutely wonderful, no nonsense, bent way over backwards to make things right for me (none of which were their fault). Matt called last week to check up on me and said that GEP has a shortage on cranks and cannot get product to them. Judging by my first experience, which I hope and pray was an anomaly, I wonder who their crank supplier is. But, like I said, the Peninsular folks are the absolute best and cannot speak highly enough for their integrity, experience and customer service. They went way above and beyond to make things right for me and frankly it has restored my faith that there are actually great folks still out there in this world to deal with. That and you Slim! Thanks a ton for turning the ATT around so quick for me. Got a brand new motor and turbo and life is good! Intercooler next? We shall see!

I do want to connect and get my extra ECM programmed. Got a note out to KOJO but if you or anyone else has someone you recommend highly, let me know.

Ben

More than welcome and I have a guy that will dyno your truck. Found him through a friend his racing season is coming up so need to schedule the time with him before he gets busy. Hit me up on the text and I will send you his number.

Any MPG changes good or bad? EGT's? Engine temps? etc. Do you drive it unloaded and if so, how is that?

I'm not sure about the EGTs, because I didn't install a gauge yet. My truck is a 2000 so my temp has always stayed 190, even with the turbo unless I really step on it do I see temp increase. The biggest improvement is the mpg. I'm getting around 16. And yes I run the truck loaded everday as I said the turbo wasn't a toy it's a tool in my case. I make speed with 3500 lbs in the body going up hill without any smoke, So it's burning all the fuel I give it.
