A military rebuilt 6.5

Just saw the thread, where did you have it hiding? Anyway I'm subscribed now. Looking forward to more pics of the build.

With any luck I'll get mine painted today.

I'm glad you're along for the ride....especially since half your catalog is going into this thing! :D I debated about starting a new thread once I started to actually do the build, but I just left it in this one.

I can't wait to see yours up and running!

I'm getting closer too. Got first coat of paint on. I will post some pics tomorrow in my build thread.

I didn't get to work on it this weekend, so I didn't have any progress happen until last night.

First, I dropped the trans off to the shop during my lunch yesterday (I found out they were closed Friday). I'm getting a billet converter from Precision Torque Converter and a new valve body with all the Sonnax updates. He's also going to install the Sonnax valve in the oil pump (I suspect this is the majority of my current problem). Then when I got home after work I found that my ECU from Heath showed up, so that was fun to see! Then I went out to the barn with the intention of just getting the engine ready to pull Tuesday night, but I got more done than expected and I got it all the way out. That will be a good start for tonight - I'll rob all the parts off the old engine that I need for the new engine and start cleaning them up.ECM.jpg Engine Out1.jpg Engine Out2.jpg Engine Out3.jpg Engine Out4.jpg

Looking at the mess the firewall is with the engine out...I'm not sure if I'm going to try to tackle any sound deadening or not. I'll have to hop in there and see how bad it really looks to do. There's no better time to do it than now though, so I may just have to suck it up.

It is your best bet to do it before the engine install.

You using poly engine mounts or?

I'm just doing stock replacements. The stock ones that were in it were still fine, I just wanted to replace them while I could. I know it sounds silly based on everything else I've spent money on, but I didn't want to spend the money on the poly ones.

Oh yeah, it would be now or never. So either I'm doing something, or I won't be doing anything. I just have to decide how much I care about it, whether it's worth the effort or not to do the sound deadening work.

Great job, I haven't even touch my short block and I trip over it every day.

I totally understand. Life gets in the way sometimes. My motivation to keep going at this hard is the Tahoe is my daily driver. Right now I'm driving "Ol' Reliable" a 1994 F150 with a 300 straight six......it's soooooo slow. Plus the suspension just hasn't been the same since I took it on the sand dunes last summer....whoops!

If your OE ones are good, leave them. The aftermarket stock replacements are junk and you will be doing them in probably 6 months.

I see you have a 4" exhaust? How loud is it inside your cab? Looking to maybe upgrade mine to 4" but its so quiet right now, I don't want to ruin it.

It's pretty quiet overall. When I first did the 4" exhaust, I had just the FTE resonator/muffler on and it was pretty nice inside. The only time it got loud was when in the throttle over 2700 rpm or so. That was fine for me, but then I installed a non-EGR lower intake and gutted the EGR upper intake...once I did that, the exhaust got louder by a noticeable amount. That surprised me. So to compensate for that, that's when I added the shorty Dynomax muffler. If I had a truck with a longer wheelbase, I would have installed a longer muffler just to make it that much quieter, but it just has a nice V8 rumble now...nothing obnoxious at all. Someday I do intend to add some sound deadening in the back of the truck just to take care of it further. Unfortunately, sound is so subjective. I do think it would be considered pretty quiet inside in general though. The important thing for me is that it doesn't have any drone inside....I would not be able to tolerate that. Lately it has seemed a bit louder on the inside to me, but I think I had a cylinder that wasn't putting out like the others and that was messing with the sound. I'm anxious to hear this thing running once everything is sweet inside the engine once again.

Another thing to note is that it has a nice healthy tone on the outside. My brother took off with it one time and I was really pleased with the sound. That was with the GM8 on it still though, so I don't know what it sounds like now that I have the HX40 on it.

Awesome thanks. I wouldn't mind a nice throaty exhaust but just don't want to hear it inside. I am going to do some tests to see how restrictive it is before making up my mind.

I can get the red or black ones from ES if needed. I have a red set on the shelf for my new build.

Got the old engine torn down to the short block tonight. Think I had a slight problem with coolant in the oil???? It's a shame seeing those purdy rockers all soiled like that.
