A military rebuilt 6.5

Nothing like pics of shiny new high quality parts! :) So Nate, whats the plan on the precups? I assume your Optimizer came with NA cups, so are you swapping over the diamonds you just put in your other 6.5?

Matt
I sent mine out to the guy that Dennis has machine precups for him. He just told me today that they're done so everything's coming together! Here's the pic he sent to me today to show me how they look after the machining. They look a little bigger than Diamond size but they should work ok, a couple other people have run them ok and it was a bunch cheaper than new Diamonds from GM. I called a guy I used to work for at a dealership and his employee cost was $42 each!! image.jpg

When Crane reground my cam they took .030" off the base circle . I didn't think that was a problem and just reused the pushrods . I also have a new DSG girdle kit for the 10mm bolts that I can't use if you are interested .

I bought a pair of checking pushrods so I can make sure I have the right length pushrods in it. I think I'll be ok without the girdle as tempting as it is to get more parts....I'm into this thing further than I intended but I think I'll be happy with the result.

Winter sucks. I got my non-Tahoe tasks finished early so I thought I might get the Caddy moved out of the barn. I need the real estate freed up for working on the Tahoe and still haveCad in barn hood off.jpg my other stall open for working on anything else until the Tahoe is done. I spent half an hour trying to get the side door open...during which time it came off the track!! I finally got it open all the way, but figured I should quit while I was ahead so I closed the door back up. Of course we got a little more snow last night and supposed to get a little more today. I don't think it will affect me getting the car out, but with my luck it probably will. Plus I'll have to do some plowing tonight to clear the driveway before I can work on moving the car. So here it sits still, taking up the space where I'll be working on the Tahoe. With any luck there will be a black Tahoe sitting in this spot tonight.

Now thats a whole lot of Cadillac! The very definition of Lead Sled, although I'm sure its a little lighter, seeing as its missing 500 cu. inches of American muscle under the hood. :D

Hmmmm....you know I have been trying to figure out what to put my crack-free 6.2 in....:D

This Caddy is what I was planning on working on this winter, but the 6.5 going to hell in the Tahoe forced me to do otherwise. I see there's a "Project Central" area so I'll probably start a thread over there once I start working on it again. Basically, it's a 50,000 mile car that was sitting in a couple barns for 20 years. I went through the whole brake and fuel system to get it back on the road. My final project was to do a new exhaust. I decided that since I had to do a whole new exhaust, why not put some headers on it!? Of course a couple bolts snapped off in the head and I couldn't get at them with the heads/engine in the car. Since I had to pull the heads or engine I might as well........you know where this is going  So now the engine needs to be put together and put back in the car along with some AC system restoration. It's a factory limousine so it has a separate AC system in the trunk that I want to get working as well. Unfortunately right now it's just a big lump of metal taking up space in my barn. Hopefully that changes this spring....if there's any money left after the Optimizer project! o_O

My precups just showed up. Here are some pics and measurements. I don't have any Diamonds to compare for reference, but visually they look to be close. They're all clean too! They were pretty dirty when I sent them to him, but I'm sure he needed them clean for fixturing while machining. Let me know if you want any other pics or measurements.

Who machined the cups? I find it interesting the shape he did. All the others I've seen were the same shape as the original precup just bigger.

I had read that Dennis (Slim Shady) had a guy machining cups for him, so I contacted Dennis and he got me in touch with the guy.

Great build thread, I am too building a GEP.

Interesting to see how the Precups work out.

Thanks TVM! I saw your thread over at the Place, but I haven't checked in on it lately. Wasn't your rebuilt at one point because you found an undersize crank and oversize bores?

I'll be interested to see how these cups do too, but since I'm doing so many things at once it will be difficult to tell what is what. I did know I didn't want the Squares though. Last fall when I had the top end apart, I changed from Squares to Chinese Diamonds and I gained mpg and had less smoke, so I wanted to make sure I did something other than Squares on this engine too. It sounds like my results aren't the same as everyone else's, but that's what they did with my combo (at least the one I had).

I didn't make a ton of progress last night. After plowing the driveway, I got the Caddy moved out and the Tahoe moved in. I got the transfer case ready to come out - I just need to take the adapter bolts out. I found myself moving pretty slow last night...even though it was 52 in the barn at about chest height, it was MUCH colder than that on a creeper . Tonight I'm gonna wear thermals under my jeans and hopefully that will help me keep moving better. My plan is to have the trans out tonight so I can take it to the shop tomorrow for rebuilding. We'll see how well I'm moving tonight. I need a hoist!

Yeah, .040" over and 10" under crank but for what I am doing, that's fine. Also have brand new GEP van heads and will make a custom crossover, also going serpentine belt, bought a 99 Savanah for parts.

Sounds cool! Sounds like I have a thread to go follow :) I have a soft spot for vans, my wheels when I was a teenager was the family '78 Chevy G30 with a 350 - my dad and I put an old 350 hp 327 cam in it. It was sure fun pulling up to stop lights in a van with a lopey idle!

LOL, you would have loved my green 1975 B250 van, I put a raised roof on it, warmed over a 360 with headers, Edelbrock intake, 4 barrel, ram air, Aurora coil, RV cam, dual exhaust with 2 chamber flowmasters and real ported X heads. Dynoed at over 400 ft/lbs at the back wheels, swapped in an A518 for MPG but didn't do a damn thing, lol. It was fast and mean sounding, but got 10 mpg empty, towing 8000lbs, city, hwy, :(

That sounds totally fun! Like the ambulance from Cannonball Run!!

Just saw the thread, where did you have it hiding? Anyway I'm subscribed now. Looking forward to more pics of the build.

With any luck I'll get mine painted today.
