o_O Psssst.....

This is a thread about a 1993 DB2 mechanical injected 6.5. PMD's didn't come out till 1994.

So the OP really can't use a PMD! :p

Article on towing with the ATT

I know this is an old thread but WW i'm new to TTS and want to say I enjoyed your article and your no nonsense post from a hard 6.5 user perspective. I came about my '93 5sp 6.5 by a accident. The po couldn't get the rig to start when hot, had no money and knew nothing about diesels. It's a super clean truck and I actually new the previous owner who bought it new. It had been taken care of very well I knew. I gave him 2000.00 for it put a new set of batteries on it and drove it a year before the worn IP had to be replaced. It served me well as work horse in my part time farm and ranch operation. The real rub came when I took a 600ml trip pulling a 20ft flat bed. I had a fairly light load but it caught a lot of wind. On the way home in a series of rolling hills against a 25mp headwind with it to the floor I could only manage 55 or 60 tops getting about 6mpg. So I began to pursue getting more out of the 6.5. New custom exhaust and down pipe, pillar gauges, turbo master and turned up IP. Woke the truck up quite a bit. I now wanted to upgrade my turbo. I have been looking at the ATT. When I looked on the other forum guys are getting crucified for mentioning it! I then found this forum and your post with actual experience and test data on the turbo. I called Leroy diesel and he very kindly suggested what all mods I should make to help the turbo change really work and even told me about some cheaper alternatives to some pricier mods I was thinking about so he definitely is more concerned about his customers getting good results than how big an order he gets, he sure earned a customer in me! Thanks and keep up the good post!

Welcome to the TTS. Different attitude around here.

I will borrow that light trailer of yours, toss a cross on it, and if they can catch my 1993 in the mountains pulling The Mongolian Rim (1000' to 7600' with grades over 7%. My Backyard alone in town has some 10-18% grades) towing with their 6.5 then and only then we would worry about being crucified. They may have to go back for the cross because starting out with both rear wheels lit up tends to unload trailers. That is if their 6.5 doesn't blow on the 6.5 killer grade... :p

I am an auto and dropped a high stall Yank on the 1993 with 4.10's since the above was written. It's a handful to light both rear tires up from a dig with a loaded trailer. The Yank alone is the reason for that as it brings the engine up to 2000 RPM and the ATT lights off at that RPM.

There are a couple ways to handle getting used to the 0-2200 RPM power band of the GM3 going to the 2000-3600+ RPM power band of the ATT. It's fine as is, but, some of us wanted more.

For a manual trans a Spool valve would help as member @6.5L lead the way:

And I seconded:

ask Lerory @Burning oil about the BD Spool Valves.

So you still use your 93 to haul your route? Any downside to the quick spool valve?

The truck is now a retired Rat Rod. Only used the ATT alone for the last of the hauling we did. In hot weather 105+ you should run synthetic oil as the BD Spool Valve retained exhaust heat pushes the limits and ruins conventional oil.
