635 Rebuild cont.

Not a paid commercial

"Not everyone can be a hero. Somebody has to sit on the curb and wave [at the parade] as the others walk by." Bill Cosby
:hello:

SCTA World Finals and since we didn't have a team to crew for, Ted (635) and I met out there and volunteered where we could and put up a display of our own.
IMG_0730.jpg

First trick was getting there. The #$%^&* new iPhone 'turn by turn' map gave me the option to go diagonally to I-80 so I took that over the 'long way'...
Got to the freeway and the road ended about 50 meters from the freeway and zooming in to the map indicated I was on the 'right' blue line and it turned left in the direction I wanted to go but now I'm looking at a dirt road climbing over a finger of a mountain topping 180' above the freeway...at night...:rof:
IMG_0718.jpg

Once I got on the freeway with the sun coming up behind me IMG_0720.JPG

I had 77 miles to go to meet Ted for breakfast at 8:00 and it was 7:15 so I needed to make up some time...
IMG_0722.jpg

Ted took a page out of my book and packed a few spares (tools, pmd, starter, more tools, bumper....) with him to ensure a successful trip...but a @#$%^& chassis?
IMG_0744.jpg

That's from the Monster Truck "Destroyer" piloted by Roger Stidell and Ted's taking it the long way to Texas for engine and shock mount relocation.

Here's a diesel powered rail built by the Mechanical Engineering students at Utah State University (Aggies).
IMG_0741.jpg

Here's the motor.
IMG_0738.jpgOk, so it isn't a big diesel but it went 72 mph into a head wind!

An elementary school principle and his wife are headed to Los Angeles via the flats and Tahoe in this ugly old thing
IMG_0734.jpg
That's a 1994 "Python" with a P series motor. They brought the documentation and it's the only V-6 Python out there and I think the only one he did in Purple.
Their plan is to backtrack Rt 66 to Chicago before returning to the land of 'Eh!"

So, we had a great day, lent a hand where we could and entertained others that cared to drop by to include my wife and her mom. Standing about 20 feet from a 270mph capable Ferrari was a real treat for my mother-in-law (she's 88 and used to be a pilot, loves fast cars still). But when he lit the fires and blipped the throttle she jumped back about 10 years. Lots of friendly folks to keep her steady and she had an absolute blast.

We went back this morning for the last couple of hours and then realized that we were pretty burnt out, sun burnt out and the fun meter was pegged so we loaded up and headed out.

Oh yeah, And you guys back east bitch about the salt on the roads...this is after only about 10 minutes of driving out here on the 'lake'

Would have helped if he didn't have to drive 20 miles out of his way (one way) to pick up his pressure washer out of my garage while the Mrs was gone and I was on the east coast. :hihi:

NIIICE Paul! Now for cripes sakes go get that salt flushed out of there...

Yes Sir,
Got them all cleaned up

Most RV's parked next to the homes around here aren't as capable as this one will be.

The salt flat pics are awesome, officially on my to do list.. The pic at the rear of that dark blue rail looking out at the flat open expanse, mountains barely visible... Very cool pic. Rather artistic dare I say. :D

Bumper.. Just get the matching rear, winch and all!

Spent the last couple of days dragging Ted around the area. He's going to assist with an exercise I'm helping to organize for next year so some area familiarization was in order.
We still managed to knock out some chores. You saw Sunday's with the bumper swap. Yesterday we found the right bolts to complete the bumper install to ensure uniformity (we all can agree that taking off one part shouldn't require several sets of wrenches/sockets due to miss-matched bolts/nuts). Stopped by Strassburg racing and talked with the rail and funny car crew members for "Y-Not" Racing. We'll see them again on the 28th in Las Vegas. Across the street is the Ceramic Coaters I use out here, A-1 Customs and they had the exhaust and lower intake completed along with the timing cover which was powder coated. They should stand the tests of time I should think.

We also changed the oil in both trucks and lubricated steering components.

Today the oil pan and valve covers went to Salt Lake City Chrome shop, Ted stole his billeted aluminium 'bow tie' from his grill as a lovely parting gift for my truck (I'll polish it up and anodize it along with the rest of the upper intake parts and such).
IMG_0798.jpg

Before we sat down to some great steaks for dinner, we swapped out the transmission pan on my truck for a Mag-Hytech unit.
IMG_0789.jpg

Now, another busy day complete and Ted is enjoying "Dancing with the Stars." He doesn't dance anymore but he still has an appreciation.
IMG_0767.jpg

Tomorrow he's on the road for Ventura CA and heads east to TX on Monday. Anyone need anything hauled back towards Las Vegas from the vicinity of Huston? Contact Ted.

Wondered if anyone would catch that one...
Advanced Powder Coating, Lindon UT. Great guys. There's another outfit that does anodized coatings in Provo that I'll be working with for that process. Man this stuff has gotten pricey though...OUCH!

Noticed the seal in the timing cover... If it was in there during the powder coat bake, you might wanna throw a new one in there.

Parts look awesome!

Yup, that was the plan. Wanted to be sure that the area wasn't coated to ensure the new seal would have a clean place to set without having to remove anything.

Parts look awesome!
Much appreciated.

Steak Sauce Powdercoat and Internet Tuning Specialties!

Yeah Buddy!
:hihi:

Tuning is another thread! :hihi:

Well, Ted wheeled out of here this morning. Just missed backdropping him against another rotten sunrise. Still, other than new houses going up and ruining my views, these aren't bad.

As of an hour ago he was just outside Vegas watching people run into guard rails when they realize the DOT Trucks with the flashing lights aren't actually moving...:rof:

Keep the greasy side down and come back soon.

What is up with that 'Ted, dancing with the stars' pic? That's strange, real strange.. :D

That's the photo feature in "Skyview" app. It lets you see the night sky in digital form and ID stars, constellations, planets, satellites, the International Space Station, Hubble and all the space junk boosters the Russians and Chinese are leaving up there in orbit. With planets, sun, & moon you can get it to display the orbit and set the camera along that path to see where it is/was/will be. The photo feature allows you to take pictures for the fun of it....what will they think of next.

Now that he has pulled out, that nasty ol shack you have just don't look the same. As good. :rof:

Those parts look good. So how much of a gain will you get by installing them? Is it still 100 horse per piece?

John

Been working things out in my head while patiently waiting for motor updates
UPDATE: A batch of new cams are in...don't know if one goes in my motor or not...update over.:cheers2:

Ted included a few items in the purchase::nanawrench::present:

1. Two FS-2500 bypass filters. New in box!
IMG_0834.jpg
One ea. for engine and transmission. I have two methods worked out for mounting. Horizontally underneath between cross frame rails on the passenger side or in the bed, driver's side. The wife suggested I get a tool box that fits in the space that is no wider than the fender well to keep it out of sight. Gotta love it when the Frau suggests truck toys! Will have to check on hose lengths though. Ted's kits have the stainless braided hoses and I'm not certain they are long enough to make it from the Bed to the transmission with the extended cab. Guess I could use couplers to extend them. Talked to Greg at LS and will pick up an Amsoil "Sandwich" adapter fitting for the OEM filter. I guess a full flow set up is needed and one can't simply run things through the bypass only. Not certain as to why. I welcome input without reference to duct tape.:agreed:

2. AirDogII DF-165.
IMG_0836.jpg
Not so new but freshly cut out from his truck. It needs a few parts like the return line adaptor for the filler kneck and such but it will mount up nicely where the Walbro and Wix pre-filter's are currently sitting on the inside frame rail. Ted had it on a vertical mounting bracket inside a toolbox in the truck bed so there is PLENTY of hose. He had to cut the wiring harness at the pump to remove everything but there’s plenty of room to splice the connector back in place.
This leads to my second question: Is the AirDogII harness even necessary? The OEM LP and Walbro worked fine with the 12v they get through the OPS as needed, so why would the AirDog? I sent a query to the AirDog techs but it’s a weekend. Can’t hurt to get some opinions.
Third Question: If I do need the AirDog harness, that leaves the OPS to LP circuit open without a load so will that be an issue? No electrical tape answers either please.

I did get some more polishing work done on the Peninsular Upper Intake Adapter
IMG_0838.jpg

Oh, and I made some improvements to the Aluminum Billeted Bow Tie pictured earlier.
IMG_0841.jpg

Amazing what patience, and 100grit, 180gr, 220gr, 320gr, 600gr, Steel Wool, 1000gr, 2000gr sandpapers plus mag wheel polish, elbow grease and 6" denim, cotton buffing wheels and microfiber towels will do. Oh yeah, and some spare time.
:bling:
Now that I have the technique down, I can start on the T-Stat manifolds and finish up the other pieces. They won't shine like the Bow Tie as they are still textured, but they'll look good enough.:coolgleamA:
