Very Impressive! That big truck will flat boogie.

Matt

The ol girl does pretty good for just over 200k on the engine. The trans is starting to let go (50k on a horrible rebuild, you pay for what you get) put it in drive and it just sits there. Injectors have 90k on them and I have a set at home that need replacing.

Went to Paul's last weekend to blow off some steam from his "project truck" problems and shoot up the hillside. :rocketwhore: He will have to fill you in on all the issues. His truck is now a neutered 2x4 until a few things can be sorted out in the front end. Looking forward to him getting it all back together to run the trucks side by side again with my boost turned up and cooler weather right around the corner. Never a dull moment for poor Paul it seems.

In the spirit of 'it never ends' I'm taking the truck off line for the next few months...year or so.
I've learned a lot in the past few years and I've learned that I've made a few mistakes that need to be un-done and am currently chasing my tail trying to do what I want and keep the truck available for day to day work related stuff. Too many instances of 'good enough' vs. the way it should be or the way I would like to see it done.
Solution. 1. In order to maintain 4x4 daily available truck like capability...Purchase a 1995 Tahoe that belonged to SSForce's grandparents. It's a cream puff and was available at a great price. It's a gas to drive and takes gas to drive it. Only downside but that's neither here nor there. Diesel purists...get over it.

2. Truck issues corrected as able with no real time schedule as for completion (yeah, new thread).
2.a. Motor oil samples still show coolant contamination though there is no visible signs other than a very slow coolant loss previously attributed to the weeping heater coil fitting on the T-stat. All levels of particulates, metal or chemical were down 50% or better but something is up. Pull the motor and figure it out along with addressing other minor issues...the 'while I'm at it stuff.' Nothing mechanically wrong with the motor so while it's only gaskets and seals between oil and water I'll be digging into I may as well pull the main and rod bearings and replace. No need to take a chance while the motor is out, everything is accessible and bearings are relatively inexpensive.
2.b. "Frame off Restoration": pull the bed, install the driver's side rear leaf spring shackle hanger; clean up frame, prime and paint; set up auxiliary filtering for the tranny and engine; redo/correct routing of the wiring, fuel sender, lines etc. with the bed off; clean up the engine bay with the motor out and sound dampen the fire wall; clean up the motor and fittings to include pounding out the F'n dent the front differential made in the oil pan; repaint the motor; lift the body enough to get at the frame and clean it up and paint that half too; sound dampen the rest of interior; replace passenger side fender; return upper control arms to OEM units and adjust torsion bars correctly; replace door hinge pins and bushings; body work on the truck that I can do; reassemble; farm out body work & paint; restore to 4x4 ("New" front Diff and CV Half Shafts); proper lift (BDS); install the new grille, bumper etc. sitting in the basement and then try to enjoy the thing for a while.

Most of the stuff to do this project I have on hand. I'll need source AN-6 trany filter hoses, some wiring connectors through Wytech, and of course, some new tools (darn) and will have to get some saw horses to support the bed on 4x4's but I have bed bolts and isolation pads along with bumper, grille, sandpaper, wire wheels, wiring, switches, fuel lines, fittings, head gaskets (and others), tubes of black RTV and other permatex products, blah blah on hand already. And I can take my sweet time now and not worry about having to take leave or 'have the thing back together because I need it for work next morning.'

What the heck, 'Girl's gotta have a hobby' and I could be drinking. Then again, with this project, I may start!

Sucks to read but I know the feeling, I did what you did for years with my Caravan until I had enough, she's been sitting for 2 years and most likely I'll fix her up over winter and bring her out fresh for drag racing season. With it not being my daily driver, I can fix her up the way I should have years ago.

It is what it is, and when it's done it will be worth it.
In the meantime- if you miss driving a fast 6.5, well I can't help with that. You are welcome to come drive my slow one again though. Maybe I'll actually get something done to it by time you see me next, other than the 3 tires it's eatin since the last time and my prius guard build.

Thanks, I've learned a lot over the past few years so it's time to take the time and get it the way I want it to be. Patience is a virtue...I'm not that virtuous but I'll try.

Don't denigrate your ride. That thing is very impressive and then you add the fact that it is a HMMWV! If I needed another project or two, I wouldn't mind making one of them a H-1.

You do nice work Paul, and I look forward to seeing your progress. Although, I will miss the videos while your truck is down.

Matt
Much appreciated, your work is very much admirable too. Then you add the cost factor in and your ability to make nickles squeal and then squel some more...Dollar for Dollar, your results are even more impressive.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I need to learn to execute a lot more 'make the best of what's on hand' vs. 'B.O.A.T'
