5.3 issues

Pull the plugs check for compression (finger in hole will work) just to see if... a rod hasn't broken off. I hear a dead hole and a clank on the disabled start attempt. If it passes that then a comp check for numbers would be next.

It does sound like a rotating assembly issue.

edit; I had to watch vid by looking up your YT channel. Maybe redo the link above.

Yeah I already did. Got the spark plugs out and will do a compression check in a couple of hours. Number 7 was dripping wet with gas. Makes me wonder if the exhaust valve isn't opening.

Cannot watch video, link is bad. I went to your page and watched it. Dead hole or two. I retract my TC statement. Like mentioned above compression test to locate, but expect to pull valve covers & pan for inspection.

So 6 were around 160 no8 was 190 no7 is dead dead dead. Gonna go get my brother's bore scope and have a look

Scope the piston top and slowly rotate engine by hand. Either there is a dropped valve or the piston does not move-> broken rod...or both.

Couldn't see anything with the scope. I'm by myself right now so I can't turn it over easily. Pulled the valve cover and everything looks OK. Could have lost a valve head tho. So I'm looking at a broken piston or rod or both. This is going to get pulled outside till I have more time to deal with it.

If the valve did come apart you'd see the spring and retainer way up past the rest. Maybe a piece of a valve or other foreign object (critters) got in. Check your intake tract for evidence?

Pull the rocker arms for that cylinder, and pressurize the cylinder with some air, then listen to see where it's going. They you KNOW where it is leaking out.

So I did as Ferm suggested and surprisingly it comes out the intake. Now I'm trying to decide whether to pull the head. If it's anything more than the head I just don't have time right now.

Sounds like you have a bent valve. I know some of the LS engines had problems with lifters sticking, so it very well could have pumped all the way up, and smacked the intake valve against the piston and bent it.

Well I buttoned it up and parked it outside to await me having more time. When I bring it back in I'll have my hoist done and I'll pull the engine. Figured if it didn't damage things too bad I'd freshen up the rest of it on the cheap. We don't drive it all that much now so if I can do a cheapie freshen up it will last us a long time

Na you'll find a new in crate 5.3 for $100 or something, lol. You seem to be able to find the killer deals.

How many miles on the burb?

any reason a 2003 engine wouldn't be compatible?
From what I can find, it should work. It's not a drop in swap, but the longblock itself should bolt in. You'll have to swap intakes as the 00 has an egr and the 03 doesn't, and the 03 is drive by wire while the 00 is drive by cable. Also the injectors are different sizes from what I could find. Another issue you might run into is the location of the cam sensor was changed sometime early on, so you might have to extend the wires and change the plug to hook up to the 03's cam sensor. Otherwise you should be good to go.
