I probably said something about this earlier but now can't find the thread.
I am looking for longer short bolts for the main bearings. The goofy things barely use half their threads.
I would use reasonably priced ARP studs but can't find them either. The bolt I have says 11.9 on the head. That...
You like that eh? Those pistons were crap. How much force does it take to make an offset rod like that? if it is already bending then how close was I to instant disaster? That rod really bothers me because with all things being equal it should not have bent like that. It looks like the main side...
Nice closeup of the pitting you get with a cheapo FOA coilover shock. Apparently FOA stands for First OverAll in the trash bin. And no they have no interest in making it right. Basically there is chrome missing and or it is thin enough it rusts. The other shock is fine but I have no use for a...
(waving little flag) I hereby claim this tiny space for people to watch the strange stuff I do on an old 1983 van I inherited from my grandfather.
My grandfather ordered this Chevy van new in 1983. The only new vehicle he ever bought I believe. His goal was to retire and drive around the...
I'll have to check out the arp main studs. Already got studs for the heads. It is all just money right?
Good info on the turbo. lol I like the setup of that switzer. cruising at 8,000lbs I have maybe 2 lbs of boost. Soon as I get into it she pops right up with whatever I need. No smoke to speak...
Lol and I'd rather not show my fab work on the turbo. I'd Also not like to do it again but it looks like I might have to if I want to adjust the turbo placement a bit. Be nice to have a little smaller turbo, physically. That Switzer is a monster. Heavy too.
Ok I guess I'll start taking...
I have no idea what block it is. Back then if I even knew I forgot. I will know within a few months though. I am still trying to figure the best way to pull this thing out. Not sure how I am going to do it considering I can't roll it out on the front wheels like I did before.
Any idea what the specs would be? turbine and compressor specs? I love this turbo but am curious how it would compare to the holsett ck that everyone else seems to be running these days.
Yeah in combination with the low compression pistons I think the gapless second ring is a big help in starting. That and my three starting batteries. It starts pretty quick.
Aye, I should start a thread on that. Need to think up a good click bait title. hehehe.
Are you sure paint doesnt make it go faster? gloss versus flat? :)
Dang! my engine would be shot if you drove it. lol No joke though. I have to keep those temps low which is kinda funny since "everyone" will...
The problem with heavier weight oil is it creates more heat. I noticed more problems from the increased heat than with the lighter weight oil. While on our last trip I could not find any xw-50 or higher. I did sub a few quarts of 60 weight motorcycle oil and a couple cans of STP oil treatment...
Well I admit not being able to keep track of what sites have my information, I do try to leave clues that rebuilding an engine and or troubleshooting is not my first rodeo in the auto dept. I will try to double check my profile here as I find this site has some of the best builds and resources...
Hmm trust me, I may seem like a complete imbecile sometimes but I can assure you that after 35 years of working on mechanical stuff I have learned to double check the obvious and not so obvious. If I have had the oil pan off twice I would hope I had double checked the pressure with 4 different...
Yes I know there are only two pumps. I checked the cams and they fit fine and were tight. I also have considered an external dry sump. I did add an extra electric pump to assist the turbo when hot. I T'd it in right before the turbo. Another 5 thousand mile trip down and in the bag though I...
I know this is an old post but I have a non-squirter block with that same problem. Only I have put about 60 thousand miles or so on it. I am currently building a new engine just because I can't handle the stress. lol
Watching your oil pressure dwindle to nothing at idle in city traffic is...
