Just my two pieces of copper but the 9.5" 14SF in my '83 has over 500k miles on it, nothing major done to it. It's open (no G80), which sucks, but it spent most of it's time on the farm just working away, with regular maintenance.

One thing I read did say that there should be a bundle of wire up under the dash for just such a thing. It's no longer the separate pigtail that they included with GMT-800 trucks to wire in an aftermarket controller.
I saw a thread on SS where all the guy did was clearance the battery tray for the compressor side of the turbo and he was able to keep the batteries in their original location.
