Ok, i went to the junkyard today and for 12 dollars i bought a few items. I first got another rear view mirror out of a 98 tahoe, this one has the auto dim AND temp!!! Does anyone know where the sensor is for the temp gauge on the mirror?? Is it internal to the mirror? I see a small sensor on the front of the mirror that looks like the one for auto dimming, but why is it on the front? I got most of the harness that the mirror ran to. It ends at the pass. side sun visor, to the mirror to the drivers sun visor and down into the dash. I kept the whole harness because i plan to swap over to the lighted sunvisors when i find them and if the temp sensor was remote.. I found where the harness connected to a plug right over the steering column. This new mirror has i believe a 6 wire pigtail, where my other 94 auto dim compass mirror only has 3. I also picked up aa overhead console out of the same 98 tahoe, but i need it to be maroon and its grey. Im still in search of finding a maroon one, i only bought this one to play around with (8 bucks from the local yard). I also found a homelink setup in a 99 Escalade that i pulled out of its overhead console and snapped it right into mine. It has 3 wires going to it, a white, orange and black. Is that also a concealed unit? It didnt really have any other wiring with it, it shared power and ground with the map lights, but the white wire is stumping me. I am hardcore into newer mods on an older truck if you havent noticed. Let me know... I will get pics up of the stuff tonight!! One more question, where the heater controls mount for the suburbans, the faceplate, is there any type of cubby that you can put in there so it can be used for even more storage space? I thought my dad had a 95 and where that filler plate is was a cubby?

First, you got a steal of a deal. I installed one of these on the Suburban, they are great.
The temp sensor is on the front of the truck, behind or under the grille.

Yes, its the auto dimming sensor, not for temp. The temperature is the outside temp, not inside.

That is the hard part to find. Used, they cost as much or more than the mirrors!
I found this link with wiring instructions

Sweet, does any one know exactly what it looks like? So i can go back and look for it this weekend?

The sensor is a little black box, it usually just pushes into the core support somewhere.

Bobbie I am curious as to how the temp sensor is wired, I have a comp/temp mirror in my truck with the compass working, but the vehicle I stole it from has the whole front clip hacked off of it, so i could not get the sensor or the wring for it. Does the sensor just take power and ground and a wire to the mirror, or just a sensor wire to the mirror? I am assuming that the mirror has the brain box inside of it also?

Its been a while since I installed mine, but I know the mirror has two wires that go to the sensor. The mirror provides the power for the temp sensor and there is no other box or connection required. I know they made a bunch of different mirrors, some have onstar controls, airbag on/off lights, map lights and I have seen pictures of mirrors with LCD displays for back up cameras as well. The one in the Suburban has temp, compass and airbag on/off. I have a mirror with Onstar buttons, I need to look into it to see if I could use them for something else. IIRC, there are two different mirror connectors, the basic mirrors use a 10 pin and the fancier ones a 16 pin - could be wrong, I just don't remember.

I bought my eBay wiring harness & temp sensor here:

http://motors.shop.ebay.com/sales-at-dnd-enterprises/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=

There are definitely cheaper ones available, but those guys know there stuff & have quality products. I sent them a pic of my mirror, and they confirmed I ordered the right harness. They also sent a PDF installation manual.

Keep in mind there are several different versions of these mirrors.

Hey, exact same mirror I have!!

DS, can you fill me in on that mess of wiring there? I am assuming that the blue plug goes to the connection under the dash, or does it go to the temperature sensor?? What color are the wires going to the temp sensor?

Matt i am sitting here right now trying to figure this out... I dont have the temp sensor, i am going back to get it friday. So i do not know what color the temp sensor wires are. But the blue plug you see connects to another set of wires up under the dash by the top of the steering column. I am just going to use it and splice off of it. I have no clue what any of the colors are at this point. There are 8 total wires at the blue plug, they are coded with letters, A-K. There are 7 wires in the pigtail to the mirror itself, that are just color coded. So far i THINK the temp sensor wires are the two closest to the driver. One is green/black, and the other is brown. Thats where im at... The other two pigtails go to the power sunvisors, which i will do eventually also...

THis weekend i am going to try and take the headliner down to make double sure those holse are really in my roof. I have only seen the holes on ext cabs, not yet on single cabs. I also found another issue. My rearview mirror has to be lowered on my windshield, the overhead console sticks down a little too far and take sup some of the mirror...

I only needed to hook up 4 wires to make mine work.

The two closest to the drivers side go to the temp sensor.
The closest one to the passenger side goes to ignition power.
The one next to that is ground.
I didn't need the middle ones.

What holds the center console in place? I have been trying to figure out how to get mine out. :mad2:

I didn't need the middle ones. - One should be Green, goes to the reverse circuit.

Just added to your post Jamie.

I didn't post the colors, because I thought my aftermarket harness may be different than the junkyard finds, and I didn't want to add further confusion.
The colors you added are the same though, and both my temp sensor wires are purple.
