Wireless router?

The home user Linksys and Dlinks etc don't seem to last very long. I only seem to be getting 1 year out of them. I went with a Cisco business class. it works great.

I've had my DLink for 3 years, you're just jinxed Kenny):h

ROFL! Kenny, just for you I went and dug my first wireless router out of my old-parts box... an SMC Barricade SMC7004VWBR

I bought from FutureShop (BestBuy) it in October of 2003, used it until my kid needed a faster router for his PS2, so I upgraded to a cheapie DLink I bought at Walmart.. I've had about 5 of them since then (faster, more range, more features, etc) and all of them still work.

Anyway, I plugged in the SMC - now I'm showing 2 routers (one at 11mb, wireless B, and another at 56 mb, wireless N, different SSIDs, different encryption schemes, but they both are working fine and I can switch between them from out here on my deck without issues.

You must buy more than trucks from Lee's Auto Ranch ! :D:D

So, you guys having said all that, whats the best one(router) to get then.I aint rockefeller so keep it cheap
The linksys went back to wallymart,i could'nt make the stupid thing work, but mebby i'm the stupid one here.

I'm no expert but I think a decent Dlink can be had for $50 at Future Shop or the Source.

This would be a very good starter router fro you.....

Well,i took your advice and got one of those, and tried to install it.
That's as far as it got, there's no way i can connect to the internet with it,even when i leave it hooked up to the puter.
I did exactly what the install wizard prompted me to do,but.....no go.

This puter has a whole pile of wireless router connections in it,so it has been used before.

Jeez,i feel such a dope.:rolleyes5:

Simon, it's picture time. Take some pics of how you are hooking things up. So we can see what you're doing.

Sorry to say this, but these things are pretty goof-proof, out of the box. Plug it into power, plug the router into your satellite, and it should work.

The HELL with it:mad2:,i guess i aint young enough to figger this shit out.:(
I can't find 3/4 of the crap i need to find on this FFen contraption:rolleyes5:
If it hasn't bolts and gears i'm F"cking lost

I'll wait for some 5 yr old neighbors kid to come over and do it:agreed:

good grief bison, get a grip man. Maybe it would help if you would calm your butt down a notch or two. Settle back and look at things alittle calmer. Take a picture of what you have and we will be glad to help you out. You might very well have a bad cable or something. Give us the model number of the modem that you are using. There might be a setting in there that we will have to use to for the router to work. You might have to tell the router what your modem user name and password is....some of the modems that are used in satelite operations require that. Everything will be alright man.

Jeez, Bison, I saw the shiny side of 50 a while ago, so it ain't an age thing.

The only way to solve computer problems, as Tim says above, is to be methodical... chances are good you missed a step or plugged something into the wrong port.

If you are getting satellite internet on your PC when plugged into your Satellite modem, you should be able to unplug the RJ-45 patch cable (the one with the big plastic 'phone plug' ends that goes between your PC and the satellite modem) from your PC and then plug that end into the WAN port on your router.

You can also plug another RJ-45 patch cable between your PC and one of your router's LAN ports to hook it up, if you wish.

As Tim indicated, post your router model number; most modern routers should be smart enough to figure out if your satellite modem uses an xover (null) cable, but it never hurts to check that - we need a model number to do so.

And don't get so damn defensive on this; it's not like anybody is calling you dumb. We just happen to have expertise in this area, much like you do when working with injection pumps (or with Bison, for that matter). We would certainly ask you for help if we needed to deal with those two things... nobody knows everything.

I just needed to vent some steam :D.
I had been at it for 4 hrs and got a little annoyed, nothing unusual:hihi:

The program tells me the router is installed properly and connected to the internet( the little Wavy wireless icon in the right bottom is all green),but when i try to get online it stays green but gets a yellow triangle added

I just have a problem understanding puter language.

Ok, here is what the trouble shooting section tells me.

I'm connected to a default SSID name, and the network or the AP(whatever that stands for) may not be configured with securety.

To FIX,go to tools menu,
click on Application,
scroll down to SSID notification.....IT DON"T EXIST,i can't find it in the list !

Or,click on application,
scroll down to shared folder notification(none found either)

Now what?

Which drink router did you buy? What operating system are you running on your 'puter (I'm assuming this is your laptop we're talking about?)

I don't have your drink, so I will have to look it up.

Don't be annoyed if I don't get right back to you - I'm taking the Mrs out to dinner for her birthday, so I should make an attempt at conversation:)

Ps- AP stands for Access Point (router), SSID stands for secure systems identifier (it's what you named your router when you dud the setup)

So does it connect to the internet if you plug your computer directly into the router and have the modem connected to the router wan port?(sometimes the wan port is labeled "internet") You should make sure there is an internet connection through the router before you try getting the wireless part working.

When I had a linksys wireless router the only way I got it to work was to unplug the cord in the internet slot and move it over to one of the four slots (ports) on the right. so the cord that goes from the modem to the router is usually in the internet slot but bypass that slot and plug it in one of your ports. another thing to do before that is unplug both the modem and router and then plug it all up at the same time.

If you don't use the internet port then you will only be able to connect one computer to the internet at a time.
