So,what do i need to get to get true wireless?
No damn wires or devices at all between the satelite modem and the puter, save for a usb pluggy inny or so.

The wife hates all the friggin wires over the floor to the dining table and her the damn dog are tripping over it constantly.
I could shoot the stupid dog,but kinda balk at shooting the wife over it):h
Just chaining her to the kitchen, wich i suggested to her, is bound to backfire somewhere i suspect:smile5:

First, you need a wireless router.

Radio Shack

Futureshop

Bestbuy

WalMart

This is pretty much a mandatory piece of equipment for high-speed (non dial-up) use - a good NAT router will also act as a firewall and keep others out of your network, and prevent a whole bunch of internet problems from finding you.

Next, you need a wireless card in your computer... most laptops come with this as standard equipment. If your PC doesn't have one, you'll need one for it to work, unless you want to put it right beside the router and plug it in with a Cat5 cable (sounds like you're trying to avoid that, though)

You can find them in the same links as above.

You can also look for that equipment on ebay, or on the forum here... some people might just have some they want to get rid of, or are upgrading to the newest and shiniest and want to ditch their old stuff.

The new stuff isn't that expensive though, so for the shipping costs, you might be better off getting new unless the price is really good on used equipment.

Let us know if you need more help.

I picked up a linksys, installed it,went trought the hole stack of prompts, puters says its succesfully installed.
But i can only connect to the net when the router is plugged into the puter, when i take the cable out, connection goes dead, plug it back in ,and internet conn is established again.

Seems like i need the umbillical cord anyway,or did i do something wrong?

yup, you need a wireless card in the tower if you want it wireless.

Otherwise, you need a cable connection to the router and the router plugged in to the modem.

Most desktops don't come with a wireless card, you have to add it.

Which linksys router did you get, Simon? Model number, please.
New or used?

Your laptop should have wireless build-in... it's just your desktop that will need a wlan card

True.

:)

Linksys is also one of the better wireless sets, depending on the model...I'm on a linksys wireless "N" media router right now...

i got no time right now to dick with this stuff,i will get on it later.
I got to make hay ,its that time of year.

Ya, I hear you; you must not have gotten 100mm of rain over the last 4 days like we did. Our guys won't be making hay for a while...

I just rode through my hay today, water everywhere. Feast or famine in this country.

i dont think i've had a 100 mm rain combined since 09 snowmelt.
Ofcourse, notting sets of rain faster than after one cuts down a hay crop, even if it is a poor one.
Last yr was allready 70% of normal.this year apears to be only 40% of last yrs.

God must hate farmers with a passion.

Only in your neck of the woods. We had SOOOO much rain over here in dryland wheat country this spring. It ws incredible. The farmers were about to start running through the fields naked. This years wheat harvest is going to be something to see.

Back on topic: You might have to enable the wireless option on your computer, and as far as the desk top goes. If it is really close to the router just plug her in....I hate Linksy routers, unless they are proffessional grade. I use DLink and have no issues. I am running high end gear as the radio shack and walmart stuff is junk. Will not waste my time on that crap.....

We run Cisco stuff in the enterprise, but I have used SMC, Linksys, and DLink in the homes of friends and family. I've even got an old USRobotics repeating router at my brother's place so I can get internet when I'm camped in his back 40...

Bought most of those from Walmart, best-buy, and Radioshack, mostly because they're cheap. Haven't really had any problems with any of them. About the only stuff I won't touch is Belkin or Netgear (or no-name copies - if I've never heard of it, somebody else can write the review.)

You know that Cisco bought Linksys, right? They seem to be making pretty good stuff these days.

I was hoping that when Cisco bought Linksys that product would get better...oh well. Crap will always be crap.

Well, I don't think he hates us, but it's that whole Adam and Eve thing ):h, you know, Adam just had to listen to his wife and eat the dad-gum forbidden fruit. God told Adam "because you listened to your wife and ate it, cursed is the ground because of you, through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you"......man I hate thistles! That's why every time I spray Outlaw herbicide, I jokingly make comments about Adam.

He didn't specifically mention rain (or lack of it) but I think "Cursed is the ground because of you" pretty much covers it. ):h

Typical Male chauvinisme started out back then allready "blame it on the woman"

You and other people eat too,why get farmers singled out to bear the brunt of it.

lol

well, my guess would be that everybody was a farmer back then......or dead of starvation.... so He wasn't singling out anybody. Men farmed. Their punishment (forever) will be as stated... unfortunately, some of us still farm so, I guess you could say we choose to endure it. :)

Of course, I only farm pine trees and wild game plots and haven't grown my own food for years...though I do eat a lot of locally grown food and my freezer stays packed full of venison, beef and fish.
