White smoke @ hard accelerations

I blow white smoke (or that's what it looks like in my rear view mirror) when I get on the pedal hard, and a little white smoke comes out when I start - but at idle, or normal acceleration I blow black smoke. I'm not leaking oil (besides through my old oil cooler lines - have the new lines sitting in the box), and losing very little coolant - not noticeable except on long trips, or short hauls, i've gotta add a little bit. New CDR, K&N cleaned - (I have a BHAF in the box waiting for the pass. battery to be relocated), and can't think of anything else.

Because I didn't empty the oil cooler 5k miles ago at my last oil change, the oil has gotten really thin - could this super thin oil blow by the rings and create the white smoke during hard acceleration? If when I change my oil and oil filter - completely - I shouldn't have to worry about it anymore...except for when its super cold, right?

the only time i've ever cleaned out the oil cooler was when i changed them to the Lube Specialists kit. I've never drained them other than that. My oil's never gotten really thin.

Any chance you've got diesel or coolant in your engine oil? My blazer was leaking diesel into the engine oil and the oil was water thin in a very short amount of time.

well, that's possible, but since i'm only blowing white smoke at hard accelerations and not all the time, then that's why I was wondering about the blow-by. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know alot about engines - but if there is fuel leaking into the oil or vice-versa, wouldn't I be seeing other things as well? Where would/should I check for leaks?

I listened to your truck start in your video in the grounds thread. To me it sounds like a miss in one cyl, that would cause your white smoke. How old are your injectors?

I haven't a clue. The truck shows to have 160,000 miles on it and i'm pretty sure nothing was changed unless broken. That pinging goes away for the most part after it warms up...or at least gets a lot quieter, haha. So, to answer your question, I'm guessing the injectors are 160,000 miles old. I'll do a search - but if that's old - you have any recommendations for a guy that's trying NOT to spend TOO much money on his truck, haha.

Recommendations are 100k miles, most have gone longer. Vendors here have them or there's ebay. Stay away from anything that isn't Bosch, AC Delco or Stanadyne.

alright! so who's a favorite vendor? :)

I bought mine from Heath. They were genuine brand spanking new Stanadynes. over 12,000 miles on them and not a single issue, that includes some heavy towing.

I was told by Ian when he was at Heath Diesel to run new quart of SAE30 engine oil in the fuel to help lubricate the new injectors. I also doubled up on my normal additive(Power Service Diesel Kleen) for that tank.

The new injectors made quite a racket for the first 1,000 or so miles then they quieted down. I figure it's because they were new and everything had to work in. IF you listen to a well tuned and maintained gas engine, you can hear the injectors ticking. That's what i heard on my truck, but it was a little louder than the gas engine injector tick.

and because i only tow about once a month (or if things calm down, maybe more than once) and this is my daily driver - should I get the HO for the extra ~100, or stay with the standard?

well, i just started the truck (it sits on a slight down hill during the day), and it took 3 times longer than what was seen in the video, and it belched a little blue with the white smoke.

Just get standard injectors, rebuilt ones off ebay would be cheaper but maybe more risk. Heath stands behind his products.

Rockauto.com has em for 41 bux a piece. Use the discount code in the thread there saves another 5%...

A few of us here including myself run them with no incedents. Brand new Bosch.

I have heath HO injectors. don't know anything more than that as Bills friend installed them while I kept their wood stove running. I also have the hp4 so figured I'd go HO. coming up on two years and 11,000 kms. yup. I don't drive much as it's 4kms to work and ride my m/c every so often. Ed

what's the difference, and do i need the nozzle & o-ring as well? Heath sells a complete kit (including new line?) - how important is it to change all of that as well?

Pick up an injector install kit from ebay, i got mine from TIm at Accurate Diesel for like 25 bux.

Has 8 crush washers, and all new return lines (clampless style), few intake gaskets...

I noticed nothing with HO injectors(not Heaths unfortunately-lesson learned) but, as said, you definitely NEED the install kit, the return lines are a must have. the clampless lines are the greatest part.

BTW, a 30mm deep well also needed. I have an extra you can have if you want.

I went back and reread your first post. How much is as little coolant? Hopefully your not burning some coolant to get your white smoke.

I am afraid, and I hope I am wrong, but I went through a bunch of denial before I finally succumbed to the thought my heads/head gaskets were gone.

I replaced both, and voila, no more weird smoke, no more lost coolant, no more goofy pressure on the coolant side. No more even close to overheat.

It's just a fact we all must live with. 200k miles seems to be heads/gaskets time. I made it to 230k.

As far as the coolant is involved - I haven't had to add any since my trip to Knoxville almost 2 months ago...so, not sure there. Also, I hauled a 21' box trailer through town (3 trips moving storage from 1 facility to another) and I under that load I had nice black smoke poofing out (I don't have a lot of boost - so its not billowing), but when I unhooked the trailer and hit it - its a whole lot lighter in color. I honestly can't tell if its white or grey - but I know its not black.

By the way - aren't heads expensive. (again - still really new to the whole mechanic thing - just haven't done this yet)
