It finally happened. Nothing even exciting. Was just cruising down the road to work this morning, cruise set at 70mph, and what I can only assume is the connecting rod, decided she had to leave the party and wipe my brand new starter out with it. This was on my Optimizer 506 block

I use to work with a guy and when something big happened he said Mommy, Daddy. That was one of those moments where a person could say Mommy, Daddy.

Sorry about your misfortune.

Eh its all good. I happen to know a guy who hordes 6.5L blocks lol got 3 at home. I will manage. Just sad I decimated my Optimizer

Ok, well my pump guru really got me thinking yesterday with a comment he made. There's no reason that connecting rod should have broke. I had talked to my pump guru a while back about a tiny little knock every so often and suspected my injectors were starting to go out and was planning to order a set. My theory so far is that said injector may have stuck open or broke and dumped the fuel load in and attempted to hydrolock the motor, thus causing connecting rod failure. I'm going to pull injectors and have them tested here to see if any were acting suspicious.

Not a bad idea, I see you had them at 2300- do yo know how close they all were, and can compare where they are now if all good...

Depending on cost, there are a ton of the testers on ebay pretty cheap now. It wont have the GM line, but if you dont have an extra line to use I can send you one. Then your set for the future.
Even though i have the parts to build one, I will probably just buy this one:

Btw, any coincidence that bosch are now made in delhi india and thats where these are all coming from?

:wideyed: Blues Brothers style... For sure the first 2017 carnage entry! Hopefully the block survived if you have any luck at all.

How many miles you pile on the engine?

Yeah sorry to hear about that! I'll be sure to listen for any injector weirdness now for sure!! And yeah, I'm hoping your block survived ok.

A injector would take the piston & smoke first me thinks... my bet is the block & crank is gone as well, the main caps can't stand to be knocked around much...

Looking forward to the tear down pics...

Rod bearing got squished and loosened up....

Exploring bad injectors: Did you have any trouble starting the engine like firing on a few cyl and then stalling while cranking? One China set I had 30K on were sticking open and broke the starter overrun clutch before I could track them down and fix it. Engine I got with/in the 1995 burb suddenly knocked under heavy throttle per the PO with a bad injector. When the knocking was pushed/ignored it melted the piston crown and then shattered the piston skirt when the piston seized. Rod only bent in that case. PO said that the knock went away when he let off the throttle. Clearly he didn't stay out of the throttle... (With a load of Boy Scouts and a trailer pulling the 6.5 killer grade around Payson, AZ you honestly have to have a real good reason to back out of it.)

Don't you rev the engine to 4000 RPM? If so checking the rod bolts for stretching is in order. It would be interesting if you do rev to 4K and things check out fine in that respect.

As we are guessing before teardown:
1) Overspeed. Maybe shown by excessive bearing wear on rods/mains and/or stretched rod bolts.
2) Dropped a valve. (Due to the sudden game over with no warning.)
